Posted by Posted by JED on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 , under | comments (2)

Maja Salvador shines in a different light as she topbills the newest drama series of ABS-CBN's Hapontastic block, "Nagsimula Sa Puso".

Maja now faces a new kind of character as she bids goodbye to her sweet roles. She will portray the role of Celina, an obedient daughter and an old-fashioned career woman whose life revolves in a routine. A change in her personality sparks once she meets the man of her dreams.

"I am very thankful na ipinaubaya sa akin ng network ang project na ito. I can say na ito na ang greatest break ko since pumasok ako sa showbiz and hopefully, with 'Nagsimula Sa Puso', magsimula na rin ang iba't iba pang opportunity para sa akin." Maja said.

Maja will be paired off with one of the country's youngest and most bankable actor, Jason Abalos and Coco Martin - Urian's Best Supporting Actor for 2009. Also in the cast are: Nikki Gil, Jacklyn Jose, Gloria Diaz, Ronnie Lazaro, Joseph Bitangcol and Nina Jose.

Get ready to be dazzled as Maja shines in "Nagsimula Sa Puso", directed by Malu Sevilla, premiering on October 12 on ABS-CBN Hapontastic.

UAAP and ABS-CBN Sports Renew Partnership for Another 5 Years

Posted by Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

ABS-CBN Sports and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) renewed their contract for another five years last Sunday (October 4) at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

With another five years, the UAAP and ABS-CBN will be partners up until 2015, marking 15 years of unrivalled partnership that has not only been durable but also unbeatable in lifting college competition to a whole new level.

"I hope that in the coming years, ABS-CBN will show them that their confidence and trust in our broadcast organization is well-founded, as we continue to try to be in the forefront of all technological improvements," ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio "Gabby" Lopez III said. This year, ABS-CBN brought UAAP to the digital era by airing the live basketball games in high definition, a first in the history of local television.

UAAP President Anton Montinola of the Far Eastern University, on the other hand, expressed his appreciation to the Kapamilya Network and like Lopez, hopes for a more fruitful partnership in the coming years.

"ABS-CBN Sports has been excellent partners for the UAAP. As witnessed in the last several years, the popularity of the UAAP has increased. We have been very successful and we hope to take our success to the next level," Montinola said.

The UAAP has been the breeding ground for the country’s top college players during the last few years and in partnership with ABS-CBN Sports has developed to become the most popular sports league in the Philippines.

Present during the contract signing were ABS-CBN Chairman Gabby Lopez III, ABS-CBN Vice-President for Sports Peter Musngi, ABS-CBN Chief Finance officer Rolando Valdueza and Studio 23 head and ABS-CBN Senior Vice-President March Ventosa.

Representing the UAAP were UAAP President Anton Montinola of Far Eastern University and UAAP Board of Trustees members Ricky Palou of ADMU and Noel Buenaventura of De La Salle University. The other UAAP Board members were on hand to witness this historic event.

Arnel Pineda Wows Oprah Anew

Posted by Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

American rock band Journey, featuring Pinoy singer Arnel Pineda, guests for the second time around in the Oprah Winfrey Show to promote their latest album, "Revelation" and the new "Journey in Manila DVD."

The said episode was aired last October 5 in the United States.

After singing their hit song "Don't Stop Believing", the band members talked about their experience when they first heard Arnel in a YouTube video back in 2007.

Journey’s guitarist Neal Schon narrates that he found this video in YouTube featuring Arnel performing at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manila. Arnel was singing the Journey song "Faithfully" and he could not believe that such a small guy like Arnel could have an amazing vocal prowess.

Neal contacted his co-members Jonathan Cain (keyboard), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Ross Valory (bass) who were equally impressed with Arnel. He told them: "The guy got great pipes, does he speak English?"

Valory said he had GS or "goosebumps surplus" when he first heard Arnel sing.

Castronovo said: "It was frightening just to hear that voice come out from that little guy. We couldn’t believe it. It’s just so strong. And the best part about it was just how humble the man was, how humble human being, beautiful heart."

Oprah describes the discovery of Arnel "a divine order that show so boldly".

"I’m facing you [Winfrey] right now. You are [one of the] biggest [names] in show business and I’m facing you. It’s like… I’m not allowed to be here but I’m here. And I thank God for that," Arnel said.

"I’ve seen enough pain and poverty in the Philippines. I’ve never been that big. All I wanted was to be able to get out of it — the pain and the poverty – and live decently everyday," he added.

Because Arnel's success story inspired many people around the world, it was reported that his life story will be made into a biopic titled "Don’t Stop Believing: Every Man’s Journey."

Journey also performed "Faithfully", the song he was singing when he was discovered in YouTube, and Oprah together with her studio audience were all blown away.

Ex-President Joseph Estrada and Pinoy Filmmaker Brillante Mendoza Will Be Featured in CNN's Scene by Scene-Films of Asia Pacific

Posted by Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Philippine ex-President Joseph "Erap" Estrada and Pinoy filmmaker Brillante Mendoza will be featured in separate episodes of Scene by Scene—Films of Asia Pacific. The documentaries will be aired on CNN International this October.

Hosted by CNN's Anna Coren, the four 30-minute documentaries celebrate the cultural diversity and outstanding quality of the films being produced in the region.

Erap was interviewed by CNN on the set of his upcoming Star Cinema film Ang Tanging Pamilya. He is cast as the father of Toni Gonzaga and he acts opposite comedienne Ai-Ai delas Alas. Sam Milby plays the Fil-Am boyfriend of Toni's character.

In the official website of CNN, it gave this episode guide:

"Removed from office in a bloodless coup amidst massive protests in 2001, former Philippine president Joseph Estrada, once an action movie star, returns this year to the big screen with his first film since his ousting over allegations of incompetence and corruption. Estrada starred in 120 movies in a 26 year acting career and used film as a launching pad for his political ambitions. 'Scene by Scene' visits Estrada on the set of his new comedy where he plays a minibus driver trying to deal with his daughter's plans to marry her Filipino-American boyfriend. At 72 years of age, Estrada is poised for a star comeback—in both film and politics."

The episode featuring Erap will be aired on October 17 (9:30 pm) and October 18 (3:30am & 4:30 pm).

Meanwhile, Direk Dante caught the attention of CNN when he won as Best Director in the 2009 Cannes Film Fest for his film Kinatay. Scene by Scene takes a look at the Philippines' thriving independent filmmaking scene and speaks to the director shortly after his Cannes win about being at the forefront of the Filipino new wave.

Aside from being featured on Scene by Scene, Direk Dante was also featured on CNN's Talk Asia, which was aired last August.

This episode will be aired on October 11 (12:30am & 7pm) and on October 12 (2:30am & 10am).

This series of documentaries is released to drum up excitement for the 2009 Asia Pacific Screen Awards. In last year's edition, the Nora Aunor-starrer Himala was chosen as the Best Asia Pacific Film of all Times through an online poll.

Judy Ann Santos Covers Preview Magazine October 2009 Issue

Judy Ann Santos is one of the few famous faces to have graced the cover of Preview magazine for the fourth time. Thrilled to be doing something different from the usual studio shoot, the actress tells with excitement, "It's really exciting. Every Preview shoot that I have, they really give me something new."

Even more exciting is the chance every reader has of winning what Judy Ann is wearing on the cover (click here to join the promo).

The challenging shoot with photographer Paolo Pineda required Judy Ann to pose and walk around wildly growing talahib at Nuvali in Laguna, which she referred to as revisiting her "Ula" days.

Judy Ann never complained about the heat or the location, even as she was required to walk back and forth across the tall kogon grass many times. Perhaps that gorgeous pair of boots helped, for the actress laughed and smiled throughout the shoot.

It's a good thing that she was clad in layers of chic knitwear, as one shot also had Judy Ann reclining on the grass in an idyllic pose.

Asked about her favorite piece from the bohemian rock-themed shoot, which featured trendy label Mango's F/W 2009 collection, Judy Ann replied that she was partial to the plaid and checkered pieces, although she wouldn't mind bringing the fur vest and dresses when she travels abroad.

Preview Magazine October 2009 issue is now available at all magazine stands nationwide.

I'm Not Surprised
Not Everything Lasts
I've Broken My Heart So Many Times,
I Stop Keeping Track.
Talk Myself In
I Talk Myself Out
I Get All Worked Up
And Then I Let Myself Down.

I Tried So Very Hard Not To Loose It
I Came Up With A Million Excuses
I Thought I Thought Of Every Possibility

And I Know Someday That It'll All Turn Out
You'll Make Me Work So We Can Work To Work It Out
And I Promise You Kid That I'll Get So Much More Than I Get
I Just Haven't Met You Yet

Mmmmm ....

I Might Have To Wait
I'll Never Give Up
I Guess It's Half Timing
And The Other Half's Luck
Wherever You Are
Whenever It's Right
You Come Out Of Nowhere And Into My Life

And I Know That We Can Be So Amazing
And Baby Your Love Is Gonna Change Me
And Now I Can See Every Possibility

Mmmmm ......

And Somehow I Know That It Will All Turn Out
And You'll Make Me Work So We Can Work To Work It Out
And I Promise You Kid I'll Get So Much More Than I Get
I Just Haven't Met You Yet

They Say All's Fair
And In Love And War
But I Won't Need To Fight It
We'll Get It Right
And We'll Be United

And I Know That We Can Be So Amazing
And Being In Your Life Is Gonna Change Me
And Now I Can See Every Single Possibility

Mmmm .....

And Someday I Know It'll All Turn Out
And I'll Work To Work It Out
Promise You Kid I'll Give More Than I Get
Than I Get Than I Get Than I Get

Oh You Know It'll All Turn Out
And You'll Make Me Work So We Can Work To Work It Out
And I Promise You Kid To Give So Much More Than I Get
Yeah I Just Haven't Met You Yet

I Just Haven't Met You Yet
Oh Promise You Kid
To Give So Much More Than I Get

I Said Love Love Love Love Love Love Love .....
I Just Haven't Met You Yet
Love Love Love .....
I Just Haven't Met You Yet.

Katy Perry, Live in Manila! Concert Postponed to November 14

Posted by Posted by JED on Friday, October 2, 2009 , under , , , | comments (0)

Due to a very obvious reason, concert producers Music Management International (MMI) and All Youth Channels Inc (AYC) announce the postponement of Katy Perry, Live in Manila! concert scheduled this October 3.

Set to make the concert much bigger, better and more relevant, the two companies will be transforming Katy Perry's concert into a fund raising gig scheduled on November 14, 2009 still at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.

According to Ronald Esguerra, AYC's Marketing and Communications Director, "We are currently working on foreign and local artists to join the cause. We feel that through the universal language of music, we will be able to unite and move everyone to help out." The fundraiser's net proceeds will be awarded to an agency that has actively and efficiently been deploying donations and aid to the typhoon victims. Name of agency is yet to be announced at a later date.

The concert would also be an avenue for people to drop off their donations as it houses booths specifically intended for these. Donations in kind like food, water, clothes, blankets and medicines are welcome. Everyone is encourage to bring at least one item to donate which will be deployed to victims of the tropical storm Ondoy.

Filipina Sylvia Ratonel is a "Singapore Idol Season 3" Sensation

Euro-Filipina Sylvia Ratonel, who works as a secretary in Singapore, joined Singapore Idol on its third season and is currently enjoying her place in the show's Top 12 roster of other talented singing hopefuls.

In the first weekly performance, where the Top 13 had to sing chart toppers, Sylvia performed Alicia Keys's "Fallin' (watch her performs below).

Because of her impressive performance, Sylvia survived the first elimination.

In the Top 12 performance, the contestants had to sing songs from the year they were born. Sylvia chose to sing Guns 'N Roses' "Sweet Child of Mine" (watch below).

The 21-year-old's version of the song did not exactly impress the Singapore Idol judges (Ken Lim, Florence Liam, and Dick Dee), but they unanimously commented that Sylvia's energetic nature would get her further in the competition. That said, voting came into place and thankfully, Sylvia's version did not have her end up in the bottom three.

Watch below Sylvia Ratonel's other Singapore Idol performance:
