ABS-CBN News Boosts Fight Against Fake News with Digital-First Stories

6/30/2019 10:28:00 PM

ABS-CBN News strengthens its fight against disinformation and misinformation online with the launch of "NXT," informative videos on current events and relevant issues produced for the digital generation of Filipinos.

"NXT," which is housed within ABS-CBN News' online and social media platforms, will explain complex issues and phenomenon through concise, engaging, and well-researched videos that will first be released on digital. It "unbreaks" traditional news formats to suit the changing needs, habits, and interests of audiences online.

ABS-CBN News Digital head Karen Puno said they envision "NXT" to be the source of authoritative news content produced specifically and especially for the YouTube generation, who are currently being targeted in spreading disinformation and misinformation online.

"We set up a new team composed of video journalists and producers that will utilize all manners of audio and visual tools and storytelling styles to deliver relevant, credible, and authoritative breaking and context news stories to the digital generation," she said.

ABS-CBN Integrated News & Current Affairs head Ging Reyes said this small but nimble team of video-and-tech-savvy video producers will be working with ABS-CBN News' roster of veteran news reporters and researchers to produce videos that are truly able to analyze and provide context to current events. "NXT" will also carry in-depth reports, fact-check pieces, and features that convey the biggest stories of the day.

Breaking in its video capabilities before the "Halalan 2019" in May, NXT produced veteran journalist Christian Esguerra's explainer "#Halalan2019: Ano ba talaga ang trabaho ng senador?" (https://www.facebook.com/dzmmteleradyo/videos/2022904938004294/) which aimed to enlighten audiences on the real responsibilities of a senator.

Meanwhile, the "Millennial Meetup" series featured six young persons for a discussion on the country's most pressing issues, including mental health, same-sex marriage, and federalism like in this video (https://www.facebook.com/abscbnNEWS/videos/335768793752387/). On the other hand, the "Pipol" series focused on individuals who achieved near-impossible feats or have remarkable stories, like shoe designer Jojo Bragais, who created Catriona Gray's Miss Universe heels (https://www.facebook.com/abscbnNEWS/videos/483818115725435/).

These "NXT" videos gather page views anywhere from 150,000 to 2.5 million, serving as testimony to the new news consumers' appetite for this video form.

The launch of "NXT" is part of the digital transition of ABS-CBN, which has the biggest online presence among local media networks and a growing list of digital properties. In 2018, the country's leading media and entertainment company relaunched its pioneering streaming service iWant, which presently houses the biggest library of free movies, shows, and live events in the country and opened 2019 with over 11.3 million subscribers.
