Alab Pilipinas faces ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) powerhouse, the 2016-2017 season’s finalists Singapore Slingers this Wednesday (November 29) at the Sta. Rosa Multi-Purpose Complex in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Fans can catch the game LIVE at 8pm on S+A and S+A HD.
Bannered by 2016-2017 ABL MVP Bobby Ray Parks, and world imports Reggie Okosa and Ivan Johnson, Alab looks to feed off from the energy of an always-packed Sta. Rosa gym to put a dent on the Slingers’ record as well as get an early upper hand in their budding rivalry.
Alab stood toe-to-toe with their Singaporean counterparts last season, splitting the four games they played. Another interesting note in this matchup is that this season, former Slinger Josh Urbiztondo is playing for the Philippine side after signing up with Alab this year.
The Philippine team hopes to make a deeper run in the new season after falling short of their objective last year: to win a championship. Last November 19 at the MoA Arena, it paraded its new recruits in veterans like Urbiztondo, former DLSU Green Archer Rico Maierhofer, and Cebuano hotshot Dondon Hontiveros alongside new head coach Jimmy Alapag to start its campaign.
Alab almost beat the defending champion Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions last in that game, 89-92, with Okosa leading the charge for the home team with 28 points and 12 rebounds with fellow import and former Atlanta Hawk Ivan Johnson and Parks with 17 markers each. The three will take the cudgels for Alab once more to break into the win column against the Slingers, who defeated CSL Knights Indonesia 77-66 in their home opener behind world import Xavier Alexander, slotman Ryan Wright, and point guard AJ Mandani.
ABL’s exciting home and away format of the young league has endeared itself to fans in every place it visits, packing gyms to the roof as everyone is excited to see the stars from other parts of the Asian region visit their own hardcourt. Filipinos fans get an additional treat as some of our homegrown players are playing as imports in other teams such as the Slingers’ AJ Mandani, the Long Lions’ Christian Standhardinger, and Formosa Dreamers’ James Forrester to name a few.
