All Hell Breaks Loose When “Johnny English Strikes Again”

In Universal Pictures' new action-comedy Johnny English Strikes Againwhat ensues is a battle of wit versus the witless, mastermind versus Mr Mindless, high tech versus analogue as Johnny English lurches from one mishap to the next.

Showing in Philippine cinemas October 10, the film stars Rowan Atkinson (the Johnny English films), Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) and Emma Thompson (Beauty and the Beast).

Five days before the British Prime Minister is to host her first G12 summit, MI7's security is breached and every agent in the field identified and exposed.   The only hope of finding the perpetrator is to bring an agent out of retirement, but with most of them either dead or close to it, the head of MI7 is left with only one choice, and his name is English… Johnny English.

As the film's story process unfolded, the filmmakers hit on a theme: analog versus digital. From this, the plot and villain for Johnny English Strikes Again began to take shape.

A man who perhaps was more in his prime in the pre-digital days, Johnny English remains the perfect symbol for the analog world. "The more the world becomes digitized, the more extraordinary analog is," says screenwriter William Davies. "There's something so physical and appealing about it. And of course analog has an advantage over the digital high tech of 21st Century. Analog is invisible to the digital world."

Representing the hi-tech digital world is American billionaire Jason Volta, the head of a tech company who meets with the Prime Minister to convince her to hand Britain's digital security matters over to his company. While the PM also pressures EU leaders to do the same, little does she realize that Volta is the one behind the security breach and the accompanying ransom demand. While Johnny English stumbles upon his scheme, when nobody believes him, he must set out to find proof.

With Johnny brought back to MI7, the plot and characters began to be fleshed out for a story that takes Johnny English from London to the French Riviera and finally Scotland. As Atkinson explains, the script development comes down to two factors: "Is this an appropriate joke for Johnny English and is it a good enough joke?" His task is to ensure the tone of the ideas remain consistent with the Johnny English character – "this spy who's not as good as he thinks he is".

Davies praises Atkinson for his innate comic sensibilities and the way he understands the Johnny English character. "The thing about Rowan is he knows exactly what's true to the character and the way the character is going to be in a certain situation. Certain things are too big or too wacky.  It has to feel real and it has to feel true, otherwise it doesn't work. The world around Johnny has to feel as real as possible to be funny. Rowan is very careful about how that stuff is calibrated."

5 Notable Lessons from “FPJ Ang Probinsyano” Most Memorable Scenes

"FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" has just turned three. While its run has given us iconic and meme-worthy moments, the show remains loved by millions because of how its stories and characters reflect the lives of ordinary Filipinos and families. The lessons it has taught us are also just as enduring as the character of Cardo Dalisay (Coco Martin), who continues to defy death and show us what it means to be a good son, husband, father, and citizen.

As it celebrates its three successful years on television, let's take a look back at the lessons "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" has shared with us through some of the most unforgettable and touching moments in the series.

1.    Forgiveness

Although Cardo loves and would do everything for his Lola Flora (Susan Roces), but this has not always been the case. Cardo used to carry a deep grudge against his grandmother for leaving him with another family when he was young. They met again when Cardo disguised as his deceased twin brother Ador, and he confronted Lola Flora and blamed her for all the hardships he experienced alone growing up. Lola Flora tearfully explained that she made the hard decision to make sure the young and sickly Cardo would live, and the family she left him with promised that they would pay for his medication. This revelation instantly took away all the pain in Cardo's heart and made him forgive his beloved lola.

2.    Sacrifice

Because of his fearless dedication to saving lives, Cardo has put himself in danger to accomplish his missions. But as he became a family man, he turned his focus towards his wife and son and gave up his post as a police officer. However, after his son was killed in a terrorist attack that was staged by Pulang Araw, Cardo decided to return to service as a Special Action Force member and set aside his family to hunt down the rebel group. His sacrifice has saved countless of lives, and eventually led him to becoming part of the vigilante group Vendetta that vows to expose corrupt officials and give justice to all their victims.

3.    Unconditional love

Cardo's dedication to avenge his son's death took a toll on his relationship with his wife Alyana (Yassi Pressman). The two lived separate lives for a time, but as soon as Cardo realized that he could potentially lose his wife for good, he rushed to her and brought her to a far-flung community so they could settle their conflict. There, Cardo showed how much he was willing to change for Alyana. It was not easy for her to accept his apology, but after a life-changing incident, Alyana realized that he couldn't live without Cardo and that there was no other man she would want to spend the rest of her life with.

4.    Acceptance

Makmak (Awra Briguela) was adopted by Cardo's family after his father, who used to be part of a syndicate, was sent to prison. After learning that Makmak got into trouble at school because he was teased for being gay, Cardo talked to Makmak and made him understand that there is nothing wrong with who he is. He also pointed out that what matters is that he knows how to love, respect, and fear the Lord.

5.    Patriotism and service

Cardo is greatly admired for his passion to serve the people. Often referred to as "idol" by netizens, he possesses the characteristics of an ideal citizen who strives to preserve peace and inspire people to do good deeds to others, no matter how big or small. Through his humble ways, Cardo has taught patriotism to viewers and showed them that they can be heroes too in their own ways.

Coco's character was also recognized by several government officials like former DILG secretary Mike Sueno and Director General of the Bureau of Corrections Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, who both lauded Cardo for setting a good example to public officials.

“The Nun” is a Holy Terror at the Box Office, Crossing $300 Million Worldwide

New Line Cinema's horror thriller "The Nun" crossed another milestone, surpassing $300 million at the global box office, it was announced today by Ron Sanders, Warner Bros.' President of Worldwide Theatrical Distribution and Home Entertainment.

Through Tuesday, the film has taken in an estimated $102.4 million domestically.  It has also been #1 at the international box office for three consecutive weekends, taking in an estimated $199.7 million, for a worldwide total of $302.1 million and counting.

It continues to generate strong returns in Latin America and Mexico, as well as the U.S. Hispanic markets, where the popularity of star Demian Bichir is a major draw.  In addition, "The Nun" just opened at the top of the box office in a number of markets, including France, Italy, Russia and Korea.

It currently ranks as the highest-grossing horror film of all time in twelve markets, including the Philippines (where it has grossed a whopping P287.5 million and still counting), Indonesia, Brazil, Romania and UAE; the biggest-grossing film in the "Conjuring" universe in more than 30 markets; and the highest grossing Warner Bros. In making the announcement, Sanders said, "This success further demonstrates the extraordinary scope and appeal of James Wan's "Conjuring" universe.  We again want to congratulate director Corin Hardy and the cast, led by Demian Bichir and Taissa Farmiga, and all the talented people who worked on the film who love to scare audiences and do it so well."

From director Corin Hardy ("The Hallow") comes "The Nun," exploring another dark corner of "The Conjuring" universe.  The terrifying film delves into the shocking origin of the demonic Nun Valak, who first made her evil presence known in "The Conjuring 2."  The film is produced by James Wan ("The Conjuring" films, upcoming "Aquaman") and Peter Safran ("The Conjuring" franchise).

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate.  Together they uncover the order's unholy secret.  Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a nun, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

"The Nun" stars Oscar nominee Demian Bichir ("A Better Life") as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (TV's "American Horror Story") as Sister Irene, and Jonas Bloquet ("Elle") as local villager Frenchie. The cast also includes Charlotte Hope (TV's "Game of Thrones") as the abbey's Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu ("Toni Erdmann") as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her role from "The Conjuring 2" as the title character.

Hardy directed "The Nun" from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman ("IT," the "Annabelle" films), story by James Wan & Dauberman.  Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, Dave Neustadter, Dauberman, Michael Clear and Todd Williams served as executive producers.

New Line Cinema presents an Atomic Monster / Safran Company production, "The Nun."  Still playing in Philippine cinemas, "The Nun" is being distributed in theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures.
