Kathy Bates Wins Acting Honors for Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell”
Legendary actress Kathy Bates (Misery, Dolores Claiborne) has been getting rave notices for her performance as the mother of real-life hero security guard-turned bombing suspect in Clint Eastwood's "Richard Jewell."
See a glimpse of Bates' performance that critics are calling "a gutting centerpiece" in the clip below.
YouTube: https://youtu.be/LMte06VLFNc
After winning the Best Supporting Actress prize from the National Board of Review (NBR), Bates has just received a Golden Globe Awards nomination in the same category.
"Thank you HFPA for the recognition, I am so proud of this film and it was an honor to work with Mr. Eastwood on telling this important story," Bates said in a statement after her nomination was announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) that hands out the Golden Globes. "I hope our film brings justice and peace to Richard and Bobi Jewell in telling their truth and honoring his heroism."
Despite her long and respected career, this film marks Bates' first at bat in an Eastwood movie. "I have to say what really attracted me to the film was working with Clint, and the idea that I would finally get that opportunity was just amazing."
The actress reveals that the first thing she asked the storied director was, "'Why did you want to make this movie?' And the first thing he said to me was that it's a movie he'd want to see. He said he really felt it was a tragedy that this man was treated so badly by the FBI, that he was tricked when he went in to make this training film, which was all a ruse to get him to waive his Miranda rights. That just astounded me. I had known about the bombing, of course, but I had no idea how devastating it was for Richard Jewell and his mother. And to read about that in the script was just absolutely horrifying."
In Philippine cinemas January 15, "Richard Jewell" is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a WarnerMedia Company.

Binibining Pilipinas, Out! Shamcey Supsup Now Owns the Right to Choose the Next Miss Universe Philippines
Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) will no longer hold the rights to come up with the next Miss Universe Philippines queens starting 2020 as the new independent organization to be headed by Miss Universe 2011 runner-up Shamcey Supsup now holds the right to the Miss Universe franchise in the Philippines.
Read the full announcement posted on the Miss Universe Philippines Facebook page.
"The Miss Universe Organization expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the Araneta Group and Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. for their more than 50 years of stewardship of the Miss Universe brand and franchise in the Philippines. Both organizations have made an indelible mark in the international pageant scene for celebrating the intelligence, beauty and grace of hundreds of Filipina queens, and for garnering several international titles through the years. Miss Universe Philippines 2019 Gazini Ganados Reveals Her Top 5 Miss Universe Candidates
Miss Universe Philippines 2019 Gazini Ganados is now in Atlanta, Georgia in the US for this year's prestigious Miss Universe competition. While the pageant is the much-awaited opportunity every year for a number of the world's top ladies to show what they've got, for the candidates themselves, it's also a chance to make new friends.
Ganados took the time to share the five Miss Universe candidates she loves to bond with after following their videos and social media content online. The lucky ladies are:
1. Frederika Cull, Miss Indonesia (@frederikacull)
Miss Indonesia Frederika Cull has a special place in Ganados' heart after the former immediately congratulated her when she was crowned Miss Universe Philippines, but she wants to get to know her better after finding her online. "I looked at her Instagram and I saw how beautiful and sophisticated this lady is," said Ganados. She also compliments the work Cull puts into working out and getting her body competition-ready, as well as the fact that she's also a dog lover.
2. Zozibini Tunzi, Miss South Africa (@zozitunzi)
Ganados admits she chose Zozibini Tunzi as one of the people she'd like to meet because of their similar names. "The moment she won, all the pageant fans went crazy and started tagging me in her photos," she shares. "I like her name—it's so sassy, but so smooth at the same time." She also admires Tunzi for her advocacies in women's rights and equality, as well as her work in fashion.
3. Fahsai Paweensuda Drouin, Miss Thailand (@paweensuda)
Miss Thailand Fahsai Paweensuda Drouin and Ganados go back to when the former joined Miss Earth in 2017, and the latter rooted for her to win Miss Universe Thailand. "I'm so happy she's going to be one of my sisters in this competition," she says. "I'm pretty sure she will rock the universe." Ganados compliments Drouin's fierceness, elegance, natural looks, and her charity work.
4. Julia Horta, Miss Brazil (@juliahorta)
Ganados is excited to meet Julia Horta of Brazil because of her smiling and approachable demeanor. "I want to be her friend if she's always smiling and bubbly," she says. She also praises Horta for being into muay thai, which she also does, sports, as well as her fashion sense.
5. Gabriela Tafur, Miss Colombia (@gabrielatafur)
Colombia's Gabriela Tafur struck a chord immediately with Ganados the moment she saw her on Instagram. "The first thing that I noticed when I checked out her Instagram was her abs when she was on the beach," she says, and shares that Tafur's similarities to a friend is what personally makes her interesting. On a related note, Ganados is also in awe of Colombia for the beautiful ladies the country always sends to international competitions.
