Based on data from Kantar Media, the Kapamilya network recorded an average audience share of 46% in both rural and urban homes, or 13 points higher versus GMA’s 33%.

“FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” (38.6%) still led the list of most watched programs in August, thrilling more viewers as Cardo (Coco Martin) finally infiltrated the rebel group Pulang Araw.

ABS-CBN’s newest talent-variety-talk show “Little Big Shots” (35.9%), on the other hand, instantly impressed viewers as it showcased the wit, charm, and talent of kids.

Jennifer Lawrence Runs Away with Title Role of Psychological Thriller “mother!”

Oscar Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence adds a home invasion horror tale to her repertoire with Paramount Pictures' psychological thriller m o t h e r ! in Philippine cinemas September 20.

Directed by Academy Award-nominee Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), the film revolves around Mother (Lawrence) and Him (Javier Bardem) who live in a seemingly idyllic existence in a secluded paradise. But the couple’s relationship is tested when man (Ed Harris) and woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) arrive at their home uninvited. Answering that knock disrupts their tranquil existence and as more and more guests arrive, mother is forced to revisit everything she knows about love, devotion and sacrifice.

One of the greatest things that can happen to you as an artist is to be a part of a movie that starts conversation because it’s an original idea, completely unique,” says Lawrence of m o t h e r !. “Even though we’re shooting things that are eerie, the allegory is so much bigger. It’s what it all means.

There’s a million different facets to this movie that certain people are going to relate to, be scared of, intrigued by,” continues Lawrence. She describes the lure of playing mother, the adoring wife and muse to Javier Bardem’s enigmatic poet: “Falling in love is scary. Being vulnerable? Terrifying. Not letting yourself be vulnerable? Also, terrifying.

It’s one thing to make something lukewarm,” says Lawrence. “It’s another to make something scalding hot. This? It’s a Roman candle. An explosion. A riot of a movie. An expression. There’s definitely a moment in this movie where some will say, ‘Darren, you’re taking this too far’ and storm out of the theater. But I wouldn’t have been there if I hadn’t already thrown the script across my hotel room in New York and thought this guy is crazy. But he has to take it all the way. I think he was right to not shy back and be afraid.”

As for that Roman candle, expect an unsettling metaphoric ride that will shock and jar audiences. Lawrence’s dark summation: “A creator always needs a muse. As long as the universe is expanding, men will be using women.”

Rated R-16 Without Cuts by the MTRCB, m o t h e r ! is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Horror Thriller "IT" A Certified Monster Hit in the Philippines, Rakes P50.18-M on its Opening Weekend

New Line Cinema’s IT, the critically lauded big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s perennial best seller, floated to the top of the Philippine box office on its opening weekend, earning P50.18-million across 213 cinemas, and still climbing.

Directed by Andy Muschietti (Mama), the much-anticipated horror thriller has surpassed the opening figures of recent horror blockbusters, The Conjuring (P39-M) and Lights Out (P36.7-M).

In making the announcement, Francis Soliven, General Manager, Warner Bros. Philippines, said, “IT is the film that everyone is talking about, whether fans of the genre or not, driving moviegoers across the country to brave the cinema for their own encounter with Pennywise. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the results, and congratulate New Line Cinema, director Andy Muschietti and his phenomenal cast and crew on this fantastic opening.”

New Line Cinema’s horror thriller IT tells the story of seven young outcasts growing up in the township of Derry, Maine, who call themselves the Losers’ Club. Each of them has been ostracized for one reason or another; each has a target on their back from the local pack of bullies…and all have seen their inner fears come to life in the form of an ancient shapeshifting predator they can only call It.

For as long as their town has existed, Derry has been the entity’s hunting ground, emerging from the sewers every 27 years to feed on the terrors of its chosen prey: Derry’s children. Banding together over one horrifying and exhilarating summer, the Losers form a close bond to help them overcome their own fears and stop a killing cycle that began on a rainy day, with a small boy chasing a paper boat as it swept down a storm drain…and into the hands of Pennywise the Clown.

Directed by Andy Muschietti, IT is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades. First published in 1986, IT became an instant classic. It continues to be counted among the best and most influential works of the undisputed literary master of horror, inspiring numerous film and television projects in the years that have followed.

The film stars Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd (Allegiant) as the story’s central villain, Pennywise. An ensemble of young actors also star in the film, including Jaeden Lieberher (Midnight Special), Jeremy Ray Taylor (Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip), Sophia Lillis (37), Finn Wolfhard (Netflix’s Stranger Things), Wyatt Oleff (Guardians of the Galaxy), Chosen Jacobs (upcoming Cops and Robbers), Jack Dylan Grazer (Tales of Halloween), Nicholas Hamilton (Captain Fantastic) and Jackson Robert Scott, making his film debut.

Muschietti directed IT from a screenplay by Chase Palmer & Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman, based on the novel by King. Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg and Barbara Muschietti produced the film, with Dave Neustadter, Walter Hamada, Richard Brener, Toby Emmerich, Marty P. Ewing, Doug Davison, Jon Silk and Niija Kuykendall serving as executive producers.

New Line Cinema presents a Vertigo Entertainment/Lin Pictures/Katzsmith Production, IT. The film is being distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Or are women going to finally break the stereotype?

At the media launch, KIX announced that actress-turned- fitness trainer, Aubrey Miles and celebrated fitness guru, Arnold Aninion were chosen as the ambassadors to emphasize this year’s theme of “Man versus Woman”. The ambassadors will lead #TeamAubrey and #TeamArnold respectively in the challenge to determine which gender is the toughest.

Aubrey Miles isn’t your typical model or actress. This girl is tough to the bone! Aubrey is the perfect embodiment of toughness and tenacity.  She supported her family since she was a teenager, she fought through her life’s challenges and emerged as a tough actress and fitness advocate.

I’m very excited to be chosen as the first female ambassador for R U Tough Enough? Filipinos are tough, especially women, they never give up even get hit by all kinds of life adversities. Like me, I struggled to get my life back after giving birth and start everything over again by myself. Everything that I have and where am at now is from my hard work and being tougher inside and outside. So I encourage my fellow Pinays out there to join R U Tough Enough? Let’s show them women are really tough,” said Aubrey.

From being a national rugby player to a body builder, Arnold Aninion, has proven to be tough with countless hours of training and hard work throughout his years as a fitness enthusiast.

Being tough is a balance of being physically and mentally strong. I believe that we can accomplish anything if we just set our minds to it. Much like the Pinoy spirit. Pinoys are so resilient that we get up every time life brings us down. I challenge everyone to test your limits and join R U Tough Enough?,” said Arnold.

In this year’s R U Tough Enough?, we are excited to go beyond the stereotype that men are tougher than women with our very own battle of Man versus Woman. We’re sure that this will make for an enthralling competition, as we know that toughness isn’t limited to physical strength; it is also a test of mental endurance. And a big thank you to our sponsors and partners for supporting this program,” said Shirley Cheong, Executive Director of Marketing at KIX, Hong Kong.

R U Tough Enough? is open to all Philippine residents aged 18 and above. To enter the contest, participants must apply online and tell us why you are the Toughest Pinoy at www.KIX-TV.com/tough. Participants with the most inspiring stories will be called to an audition and only ten individuals will be shortlisted to compete at the final showdown and stand a chance to win the title of “The Toughest Pinoy” and a grand prize of P250,000.

R U Tough Enough? Philippines is sponsored by Fisherman’s Friend, the strong adult candy with added benefits, supported by venue partner SM Mall of Asia, gym partner Gold’s Gym, as well as cable partners Cablelink, Cignal TV, Destiny Cable, Gsat and SKYcable; and media partners WhenInManila.com and Action Asia.

For 30 years, Tapa King has been the go-to place for Filipino home-cooked spread served with no frills and no pretentions. As they celebrate their 30th anniversary, the established Filipino food chain launched their very first and newest endorser–TV show host and businessman Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, the perfect celebrity to represent the brand.

We’re celebrating our 30th anniversary by introducing someone who completely embodies the way we serve food,” said Tapa King President and CEO Beatrice Magallanes. “Baste has authentic Filipino grit, the kind who eats without pretense. What you see is what you get with him, which is essentially how we are.”

In this modern age where everything is filtered and curated, Tapa King remains a simple haven and stands out by being one of the few remaining places where people can just be themselves and eat as if they were home.

This is what Baste love about Tapa King. “Pagdating sa pagkain, I’m the type who enjoys what I want, kahit saan pa man ‘yan. Wala nang arte-arte. The best for me ‘pag relax lang, when it makes me feel at home. ‘Yun yung gusto ko sa Tapa King – ‘yung parang may lutong-bahay kang mauuwian,” he said. When asked about his favorite he said that he likes Tapa Flakes, with its best-tasting original Tapa recipe, served with garlic rice, sunny side up egg and atchara.

Tapa King’s original Tapa recipe has been around for years. What began in 1987 as a humble intent to provide classic home-style Pinoy favorites along Gallardo Street in Makati, Tapa King has now grown into a well known provider of pure meal goodness with over 100 branches in Luzon, Vizayas, and Mindanao. To date, they have four branches outside the Philippines, three in Dubai and one in Singapore.

Authentic and purely uninhibited, Tapa King offers home-cooked indulgence at its finest – the kind that anyone with a healthy appetite will want to come home to,” Beatrice adds.

3 Reasons to Watch Daniel Radcliffe's Rom-Com "What If" on TAG TV

Daniel Radcliffe takes off his wizard robe and transforms into a friendzoned boy-next-door who thinks he already met the one in the romantic comedy film “What If,” airing on cable channel TAG TV this weekend.

Wallace (Daniel) is a med school dropout nursing a broken heart who unexpectedly encounters Chantry (Zoe Kazan) at a house party. The two connect right away until Chantry shoves Wallace away and reveals that she has a boyfriend.

Here are three reasons why “What If” is a must-watch rom-com flick:

1.    It’s “When Harry Met Sally” for millennials.

Peter Travers compared the film to a rom-com classic in rollingstone.com. “This rom-com is really an updated take on ‘When Harry Met Sally’… for millennials. Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan spin sweet magic out of blah-blah-blah clichés. I like when that happens.”

2.    Adorable casting.

Jordan Hoffman cited the film’s great casting in theguardian.com. He wrote, “through it all, though, anyone without a heart black as coal will sit in the theater transforming into human mush and mumbling “aww”.The reason for this – above all else – is the casting. Radcliffe and Kazan are adorable and vulnerable and sincere in equal measure, but this really is Radcliffe’s movie.”

3.    Sparkling performances.

According to Justin Chang of variety.com, “their endless dithering is made not just tolerable but ingratiating thanks to sparkling performances and a level of wit, whimsy and self-conscious genre riffery that never gets in the way of emotional sincerity.”

Catch the surprising love story in “What If” airing on cable channel TAG TV this Saturday (September 9) at 8pm with replay on Sunday (Sept. 10) at 10am. Tag TV brings Filipino-dubbed foreign films showcasing a collection of rom-coms, dramas, action-packed movies, thrillers, comedies, and the freshest Hollywood and Asian titles.

TAG TV is available on Skycable Channel 77 and Sky Direct Channel 44. For more information, like TAG TV on Facebook and follow its official Twitter and Instagram accounts (@TagTVph).

As soon as the war broke out, Loloy (John Estrada) immediately brought his wife Grace (Lara Quigaman) and son Brian (Zaijian Jaranilla) to safety and went straight to his Muslim employers’ house.

How did Loloy lead everyone to safety? What did he do when his son suddenly wanted to give up the fight?

Loloy is among those featured in Jeff Canoy and Val Cuenca’s special online report titled "Buhay Pa Kami" published via ABS- CBN News Online. The report created a buzz and was widely shared on social media for its heartwarming stories about the different people affected by the war in Marawi.

5 Places You're Likely to Encounter an "Anino"

Every Pinoy grew up hearing scary tales of supernatural creatures, otherwise known as "anino," from our parents, grandparents, yayas, and classmates. Many stories were told to make us stay away from certain places else we encounter various "anino"— creatures of the darkness responsible for weird, unexplainable occurrences.

Whether you want to avoid the supernatural altogether or actually go looking for them, iWant TV's original digital horror series "Umbra" tells the vivid stories behind different "anino" from all over the country that won't fail to creep us out—especially when you find yourself in locations where they're usually found.

1. Cemeteries in Mindoro

We've all heard of the "White Lady" in different forms, but the White Lady of Mindoro, Batangas, is known as "Lugay" for her long white hair. Lugay is said to creep around cemeteries, catching a ride on her victims' cars and motorcycles as they drive by. Next time you're at a cemetery, beware of this ghostly creature - many locals from generations ago and to this day still swear by real-life encounters with Lugay.

2. Wooded areas, antique shops, and antique furniture in or from the Ilocos Region

Ever heard of stories of sudden, unexplained deaths where the victim goes to sleep and never wakes up? Philippine folkore, especially in Ilocos will probably blame it on the dreaded "bangungot," brought on by the forest creature "Batibat" that resides in old trees. As the legend goes, old trees cut down for use in houses and furniture can anger Batibat, who in turn attacks the humans sleeping near the remnants of the cut-down trees. The Batibat sits on the chest of his victim, suffocating him in his sleep. Beware this ominous character when you're on a camping trip, trip to the province, or surrounded by antiques.

3. Old buildings, churches, and hospitals in Luzon and Visayas

Believers say that when the "Mangangatok" comes knocking on your door, you're in for a lot of bad luck, or worse, death. Storytellers warn urban dwellers as the Mangangatok roams the cities; this creature knocks on doors but isn't visible to its victims. Answering a Mangangatok's knock will make the dwellers inside a home its victims. Elders say that to avoid this, one must check carefully before opening their doors to unexpected knocks.

4. Capiz, Iloilo, and Antique

The "Manananggal" is one of the most famous beings in Filipino folkore, and they're found in these Visayan provinces. The Manananggal appears as a normal human by day, but turns into a scary, decapitated creature. As legend goes, the Mananggal's upper body flies off into the night to terrorize victims, often going for expectant mothers and killing them as they feed off the unborn child. Believers warn against taking trips to these places when pregnant, because some versions of the story tell of the Manananggal disguised as a doctor pretending to help, only to gather more victims for prey.

5. Rural, remote areas

This creepy creature in the form of a baby is one of the scariest stories told to children, since both infants and dolls could be a "Tiyanak." This scary creature is known in various cultures, but are said to abound in rural, remote provinces. According to myths, Tiyanaks are born when its parents are struggling; some versions will say a Tiyanak is born to attack an unfaithful father. Still other versions say the tiyanak is the ghost of an unwanted baby, or a baby who dies before birth. The tiyanak is a type of vampirical baby who is born to suck the life out of its victims, lurking in the dark and waiting to pounce on its victims.

TFC Supports Martin Nievera's Historic Concerts in Las Vegas and Honolulu this September Labor Day weekend

It's rare for any artist to have almost back-to-back concerts in two of the biggest cities for entertainment – Las Vegas and Honolulu.  Moreover, it's even rarer for artists to hold such concerts in premier venues like the M Resort Spa Casino and Blue Note Jazz Club Restaurant.

But trust Philippine Concert King Martin Nievera to pull off such a feat.  After all, he has several records of being first in his colorful career as a live concert performer, recording artist, musician, composer, actor and producer. Martin was the first Goodwill Ambassador of ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel (TFC), the leading Filipino media and entertainment network. He was also the first Ambassador for the Bantay Bata Program of ABS-CBN Foundation which has become a model for child care, rescue and protection services. Most recently, Martin became TFC's first artist to perform the U.S. national anthem ahead of a Golden State Warriors game at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California back in March of this year. And these are just a few to mention because he also set records in terms of platinum record sales and concert attendance.

This September, TFC celebrates world-class Filipino American talent Martin Nievera in his historic Labor Day weekend special concerts in the U.S.

First, on September 2, Martin became the first Filipino American artist to perform at the swanky M Resort Spa Casino on Las Vegas Boulevard in Henderson, Nevada.  The location is near the affluent neighborhood of Southern Highlands.  Joining Martin in the concert was the legendary Society of Seven or S.O.S., one of the best variety show bands ever that started as The Fabulous Echoes in Hong Kong before adopting the S.O.S. name in the 60s in Hawaii. Here they became the concert destination for many Hawaiian locals and visitors at the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel for over 30 years.  Martin, whose father Bert Nieverawas a former member of S.O.S., created musical magic with the latest batch of this fabulous band.

Then on September 4, Monday, Labor Day holiday in the U.S., Martin again becomes the first Filipino American talent to have not one, but two solo concerts at the Blue Note Hawaii on Kalakaua Avenue in Honolulu. Blue Note Hawaii was borne out of a partnership between Outrigger Resorts and Blue Note Entertainment Group, owner of music clubs in New York, Washington D.C., Milan and two locations in Japan. Just as they claim, Blue Note Hawaii serves as the state's premier venue for world-renowned artists, from jazz and blues to Hawaiian favorites. Located in the former Society of Seven showroom inside Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, Blue Note Hawaii features a wide range of musical entertainment – from local talent to international sensations – for limited engagements.

These concerts of Martin, as of this writing, are SOLD OUT as seen on http://www.ticketweb.com/search?q=blue+note+hawaii+martin&loc=honolulu-hi&REFID=bnweb&PL=bluenote But you can take your chances and call 808.777.4890.

This is TFC offering a great way for everyone in the U.S. to celebrate with great music, fine dining and a wonderful experience with loved ones this Labor Day weekend.
