Unravel The Doll's Mystery in 'Annabelle: Creation'

Annabelle is coming to theaters again, and this time audiences will be taken through the infamous doll's very beginnings - from her first home in a little girl's room to her first possession of a little girl's soul, in New Line Cinema's "Annabelle: Creation."

After a chilling cameo in "The Conjuring," followed by a starring role in her own film, it became clear to filmmakers that moviegoers were ready to uncover the origins of the doll that has both terrified and captivated them.

So, on the heels of his successful feature directing debut, last summer's hit "Lights Out," director David F. Sandberg was tapped to helm "Annabelle: Creation," the next chapter in James Wan's "Conjuring" universe produced by Peter Safran and Wan.

"I was already a big fan of 'The Conjuring,' it felt like a classic that stood out from a lot of other modern horror movies," Sandberg says. "I remember I was really intrigued by that world and excited to do my own sort of classic take within the genre."

"When I was directing the first 'Conjuring' and we were designing the Warrens' haunted artifact room, I remember between myself, the studio and the producers, we all kind of looked at each other and said, 'You know, it would be incredible if we could tell the stories of each of these objects,'" Wan recalls, referring to the collection the couple had confiscated over their years of paranormal investigation. "Even then, we felt that giving Annabelle that prologue opening was cool, but we sensed she had a lot more stories to tell. Every time that doll appeared on screen for just those few minutes, people shifted in their seats. Audiences react to her."

To craft the story, the filmmakers turned to scribe Gary Dauberman, who had written "Annabelle" and was eager to dive back in. "The first film I wrote extended the mythology of the doll," he says. "For this one, we wanted to dig into her history and see if we could find out how the evil started.

"Dolls are things that bring people joy, right?" he continues. "They're given as gifts, passed down through generations. So I wanted to set that up for Annabelle by starting her out from a place of love - a happy family - in order to sort of lay the groundwork for a nice contrast to all the bad stuff that would follow."

With a toy taking center stage, kids seemed an appropriate addition to the tale. While batting around more ideas, Dauberman relates, "It was James who had the idea to make the kids orphans, and from there I had my playing field. Then I just had to figure out what it is about this particular doll that makes it so haunting and evil."

Sandberg says the sense of dread already attached to her carried over to the set of "Annabelle: Creation," revealing, "even the actors were a little wary around her, asking me, 'Do I have to touch the doll? I don't really want to touch it,'" he smiles.

In fact, at the request of certain cast members, the production brought in a Catholic priest to bless the set and the prop Annabelle dolls, much as they did before cameras rolled on "The Conjuring 2" and the most recent production, "The Nun."

Just in case.

Opening across the Philippines on August 26, "Annabelle: Creation" is a New Line Cinema presentation, an Atomic Monster/Safran Company production. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

"Kita Kita" Earns P100-Million on its First 8 Days, To Be Released in Cinemas Worldwide

Powered by positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth, the comparatively unconventional romance flick "Kita Kita" has now earned P90 million after a week in theaters, or around 40% more than producers expected before release.

"Parang panaginip," Piolo Pascual, one of the owners of the independently financed Spring Films, which co-produced "Kita Kita," said in an interview.

"When I heard the numbers, hindi ako makapaniwala," he added.

Piolo admitted that he personally expected the movie, which reportedly had a P10-million budget, to make only P50 to P60 million for the entirety of its box office run.

"It's not about the budget of the film. It's about the story, the quality - so ang sarap sa feeling na tinangkilik ng tao," he explained. "I'm overwhelmed."

"Kita Kita," topbilled by the odd-combination of Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez, focused on a Filipina who had lost her vision after her engagement with her Japanese boyfriend fell apart.

The movie was premiered in select cinemas last July 19.

Releasing it in late July was a risk. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" was still showing, and the exceptionally reviewed "Dunkirk" and the space adventure "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" were about to premiere.

Its director, Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, was well-aware of this and posted on social media that she would be satisfied if her film wasn't pulled out of cinemas after just one day. "Nakakagulat! Nakakaiyak!" she wrote.

"Kita Kita" is still showing on 120 cinemas nationwide, and will have international screenings to be announced on a later date.

It made an additional P10 million on Wednesday, taking its 8-day total to at least P100 million. - ABS-CBNNews.com

Watch the featurette about the Guinness World Record at http://youtu.be/bl91yEeshZI

Spanning three continents, the record saw emoji faces inspired by the film’s characters turn up in Dubai, Moscow, London, Dublin, and Sao Paulo, as hundreds of fans dressed as the winningly expressive characters. Additional countries showed enthusiastic support by echoing the effort, with their own emojis participating in similarly themed celebrations; it is estimated that more than 1,000 emojis not associated with the record were in the mix throughout Europe, Asia and South America.

The film, about an emoji that simply can’t stick to just one expression, is due for release in Philippine cinemas on August 23, 2017. It comes at a time when the familiar messaging characters that populate our smartphones are more in demand than ever: in fact, this marks the fourth annual celebration of World Emoji Day, which is getting bigger with each edition and will be formally observed on Monday, July 17.

The global record was simultaneously set by people dressed as the yellow emoji characters from the movie in Sao Paulo, Brazil (local time 11:00am); Dublin, Ireland (local time 3:00pm); Moscow, Russia (local time 5:00pm); Dubai, UAE (local time 6:00pm); and London, England (local time 3:00pm). An adjudicator for Guinness World Records confirmed the new title for the Largest Gathering of people dressed as emoji faces simultaneously across multiple venues.

Commenting on the announcement, Josh Greenstein, President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony Pictures Entertainment, said, “Achieving a Guinness World Records title is a testament to the enormous worldwide appeal of emojis. It’s great to see so many people getting excited for the worldwide release of ‘The Emoji Movie.’”

Jack Brockbank, Guinness World Records Adjudicator, added, “We are incredibly impressed by the level of coordination and timing required to pull off this global record attempt – and it all happened simultaneously! It’s official - this is a fantastic achievement!

The Emoji Movie is the new animated adventure that unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone.

Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever.

Directed by Tony Leondis. Written by Tony Leondis & Eric Siegel and Mike White. Produced by Michelle Raimo Kouyate.

The Emoji Movie is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Cebu Pacific to Provide Free Cargo for Relief Good to Wounded Soldiers, Cops in Marawi

Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB) will be providing airlift support to military and police personnel wounded in action (WIA) in Marawi City. On top of the free airlift on Cebu Pacific flights, the WIA government troops will also get baggage allowance of up to 40 kilograms.

In cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), this initiative aims to augment air support by the Philippine Air Force by helping move wounded government troops from field hospitals in the area to larger medical facilities of the AFP and PNP. Through this, field medical stations can be declogged, giving way for wounded soldiers and police personnel who need immediate medical attention.

"It is with deep gratitude that we accept this kind gesture of support by Cebu Pacific led by its President and CEO, Mr Lance Gokongwei, in the airlift of our heroes Wounded in Action in Marawi. This will not just afford our troops immediate treatment in hospitals that offer better facilities to aid their speedy recovery, but a meaningful gesture to make your Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines feel that their sacrifices are being recognized and appreciated," says Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, Chief of the AFP's Public Affairs Office.

"The officers and rank-and-file of the Philippine National Police and our families are grateful for this magnanimous expression of kindness and compassion by the management of Cebu Pacific to provide life-saving medical evacuation to policemen who are wounded in fighting local terrorists in Mindanao. This is not the first time that Cebu Pacific extended a helping hand to our troops. We cannot thank them enough for keeping the Filipino spirit of 'Bayanihan' alive in such crucial time of emergency," says Police Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos, Chief of the PNP Public Information Office.

WIA government troops who are fit enough for commercial flights can be accommodated on Cebu Pacific flights from Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan Airport), and flown to any CEB domestic destination. Currently, Cebu Pacific has direct flights from Cagayan de Oro to Bacolod; Tagbilaran, Bohol; Cebu; Davao; Iloilo and Manila. By July 26, CEB will also fly direct between Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga City.

On top of the airlifting of WIA government troops, CEB is also airlifting cargo of relief goods and other humanitarian assistance for affected residents. Donors may coordinate with the GMA Kapuso Foundation or the Philippine Business for Social Progress for packing and transport arrangements of their donated goods.

Cebu Pacific will continue to provide free cargo support for relief goods and other essential items for displaced residents of Marawi City  and adjacent areas from various organizations, most notably the Department of Social Welfare and Development. These include food and water; medicines; bandages; clothing and other necessities. The airline has provided equipment support to the Office of Civil Defense in the transport of humanitarian assistance.

Former and current players of the Lady Spikers and the Lady Eagles led by national team captain Mika Reyes, Alyssa Valdez, Kim Fajardo, and Jia Morado relived their collegiate rivalry in front of a mammoth crowd of over 13,000 people at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, who were there to support the teams’ goal of raising funds for scholars of the Ateneo De Manila University Foundation, the De La Salle University Foundation, and the Rebisco Foundation, Inc.

De La Salle went firing off the bat, racing to a two-nil set lead thanks to Aby Marano, Stephanie Mercado, and Michele Gumabao. However, Ateneo, refused to give up and staged a furious comeback for an epic come-from-behind win, led by no less than the volleyball phenom Valdez, who scored 36 points, and her fellow Cool Smasher Morado, who was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the game from Ateneo with 58 excellent sets. Rivalry brings out the best and that extra excitement in us. We are now giving a whole new meaning to the word rival in the sense that it isn’t something negative, but something that excites people and fuels us to play our best not just for ourselves but for our team and what we represent as a whole,” Valdez added.

Aside from the much-awaited faceoff, fans also got to enjoy and appreciate the games more as a select group of volleyball stars and fans teamed up for an exciting Skills Challenge that tested their abilities in service, digging, and attacking. There was also an exhibition match featuring the Philippine national men’s volleyball team.

From a quiet solace of healing to a very public split, we learn the real, heartbreaking story of recently divorced Tricia Centenera as she shares what really went on in her whirlwind romance with popular entertainer Gab Valenciano; one that resulted to three weddings, moving across the world, a very short-lived marriage, and how she still came out with the strength and grace of Christ alive in her heart.

The magazine also takes an artful turn as it celebrates artists - designers, painters, sculptors, photographers, filmmakers, art curators - and their pets, as we step inside the creative spaces of these loveable beasts and their humans: Mark Nicdao, Raul Fores, Monica and Daniel Dela Cruz, Jome Silayan, Anne Gauthier, Michaela Eduque, Gio Puyat, Sassa Jimenez, Ciane Xavier Calma, JC Inocian, Kat Ong, Tina Fernandez, Rica Lorenzo, Rajo Laurel and Nix Alañon.

Coca-Cola Refreshes Train Ride at LRT-1 Central Station

Consistent with their history as the industry trailblazer, Coca-Cola is once again leading efforts to find new and innovative ways to refresh everyday life in Metro Manila.

Improvements at the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) continue to provide over 500,000 daily commuters with a refreshing experience. The waiting time has been significantly cut short, queues have diminished, and the train rides become faster.

The latest innovation brings the refreshing experience on a whole new level – the entire LRT-1 Central Station has been transformed into an experiential space by Coca-Cola. The various artwork, decals, and graphics provide a fresh and hip feel to an otherwise dreary train ride. The splash of red gives the Central Station and the train ride a jolt of excitement.

As a global company, Coca-Cola has always been at the forefront of innovation – may it be through the new products we introduce in the market up to the ways we connect with people, particularly teens, every day.  We are excited to have partnered with the Light Rail Manila Corporation in refreshing and reinventing the train ride experience of millions of Filipinos. We look forward to making the commute more fun and colorful for everyone here at Central Station,” said Stephan Czypionka, Coca-Cola Philippines Vice President for Marketing.

The posts supporting the elevated railway system have been painted in the trademark red color and the iconic bottles of the beverage company. Steps leading to the main ticket and station entrance have also transformed with the colorful graphics of Coca-Cola, while more improvements will be added in the coming months.

Aside from taking over the aesthetics of the Central Station, it will also become a platform for other fun surprising activities for the commuters.

Working and partnering with government is in the DNA of Coca-Cola. We have this term called ‘golden triangle’ wherein we emphasize on the need to partner with government and civic society to effect positive change. This project is more than just a marketing strategy. This is our way of helping provide a better commute for the passengers. We believe that whatever good you do to the community, is good for the business,” added Atty. Adel Tamano, Coca-Cola Philippines Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications.

Coca-Cola Philippines is the first to partner with LRT-1 operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) for the station rehabilitation program. Under the program, the LRMC can access other income sources that would help them improve the train system that spans 20 kilometers from Roosevelt Station in Quezon City to Baclaran Station in Paranaque City.

This station domination initiative involves private companies contributing to LRMC’s ongoing efforts to improve the structure and facilities of all LRT-1 stations. Coca-Cola is the first partner in this program. We are excited about the initiatives that Coca-Cola will bring to the Central Station in helping to better facilitate the riding experience of our passengers,” said Rogelio Singson, LRMC president and CEO.

TFC Earns Back-to-Back Wins for Global Campaigns at 15th Quill Awards

ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel (TFC), home of the most widely distributed premium and on demand channel and producer of Filipino content outside the Philippines, earned two nods from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) on July 5 at the Marriott Hotel in Manila for campaigns that address its global audience - its overseas voting campaign #Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH and virtual get-together for these Filipinos and their families, Kapamilya Reunion.

With the registration for the overseas voting in full swing, the government’s campaign gets a boost as TFC’s #Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH born out of a partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs Overseas Voting Secretariat (DFA OVS) and Commission on Elections Office for Overseas Voting (COMELEC OFOV) gets another nod from the PR industry by getting an Excellence award and vying for the over-all top five awards under the Corporate Social Responsibility category from this year’s Philippine Quill.

#Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH earned the judges’ nod for Communication Management and for inspiring Filipinos to capture the Philippines in photo at its current state and tell other global Filipinos how they can still paint a better picture, with the right vote.

#Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH among top five over-all winners for Communication Management

According to ABS-CBN Global Head of Corporate Affairs & PR Nerissa Fernandez: “The PR industry’s recognition of ABS-CBN TFC’s #Vote4ASelfieWorthyPH campaign affirms the value of our joint efforts with our government and community partners in reaching out to Filipinos worldwide and connecting them to the homeland through the most powerful means of involvement: the exercise of their right of suffrage. Through the power of media, this allowed them to have a voice in the political conversation and in building the future of our homeland”.

The campaign was launched in 2015 first to help the government agencies increase the number of registrants and sustained in 2016 to turn them into voters.  The campaign harnessed the power of social media to encourage Filipinos overseas to use the hashtag across all their social media accounts with the help of key influencers such as news personalities Atom Araullo, Julius Babao, Jing Castaneda, and Cathy Yang; entertainment reporters Gretchen Fulido, Tina Marasigan, Barbie Muhlach and Ginger Conejero; celebrities Pokwang, Dimples Romana, and Amy Perez; young celebrities Gretchen Ho, Ai dela Cruz, Nathan Lopez, and Joj and Jai Agpangan; music industry’s Morissette and Jamie Rivera; ABS-CBN Regional Network News Bureau reporters headed by Stanley Palisada; and radio personalities Amy Perez, DJs Jai Ho, DJ ChaCha China Paps, and anchor Ahwel Paz.

Yang, an award-winning broadcast journalist did not think twice about supporting the campaign. Yang said: “I was once an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) too - fifteen years. I know how it is to be an OF worker and overseas voter.  I voted and covered in Hong Kong so I played two roles.  There, I saw the sad and happy part of having a voice as a migrant worker.  I could say my experience was whole”. Yang covered the opening of the election precincts in HK in 2016.

At the end of the 2015 registration, total turnout was 1,376,067 or a 46.39% increase versus 815,307 in 2012 registration while the total number of voter turnout in 2016 was at 430,695 or almost 300% increase versus the 2013 elections with 118,823 voters.

According to DFA OVS Vice Chairman Ed Castro, media played a crucial role in the success of the OV in 2016.  “Media is an indispensable partner of public service. And it so happens that the DFA OVS serves the interest of the OFs. We politically empower them.  Therefore, TFC having the widest reach in network for overseas is a logical partner of the campaign.  Thank you very much to TFC’s partnership and others for all the help, we were able to set a record-breaking turnout for the 2016 national elections”.

COMELEC OFOV Chairman Atty. Arthur Lim adds: “The media, specifically TFC is broadcast all over the world which covers the 85 foreign posts of the Philippines.  The same helped a lot in propagating the OV act.  Considering that prior to the agreement with ABS-CBN or TFC, there were only 815,307 total number of registered overseas, the volume of applicant increased after August 26,2015 because of the information campaign conducted by the office and its partners”.

Kapamilya Reunion wins first Quill for Advertising, Marketing and Brand Communication

Meantime, Kapamilya Reunion, a virtual reunion that harnessed the power of technology to bring together overseas Filipinos and their families in the Philippines, earned its first Quill for Communication Management under the Advertising, Marketing and Brand category.

Launched first in 2015, Kapamilya Reunion brought the families together in one of the most memorable events in the lives of Filipinos - Christmas. Recreating the elements such as Christmas decors, Noche Buena and exchange gifts, the virtual reunion also was able to relive the Christmas feels that overseas participants miss back in the Philippines.

According to Ailene Averion, ABS-CBN Global Managing Director for Asia Pacific: “Kapamilya Reunion is one very memorable occasion where we momentarily managed to bridge the physical gap between overseas and their families here in the Philippines.  Even for a day, we at TFC, together with our content celebrities and Kapamilyas all over the world, were able to celebrate as one family during this important season of Christmas”.

According to Richard Aroboleda, Quill Awards Organizing Committee Chairman, out of the 724 entries, only 228 awardees passed the acid test. “Tonight’s winners are not just words on a document or a Powerpoint presentation. They have now metamorphosed into sterling examples of how communications when done right have lasting effects on the audiences they intend to touch. Just like the mighty quill which has throughout history, again, when used right, can become instruments not only to put words into paper but also to ignite positive change. We see these modern-day communications have the ability to do the same”, Arboleda ends.

In this year’s Philippine Quill Awards, TFC’s back-to-back wins contributed to ABS-CBN Corporation’s win as 1st runner-up in the Company of the Year category.

The Philippine Quill for Excellence was received for Fernandez by Global Corporate Affairs and PR Associate Marianne Ferrer - de Vera and PR Specialist Jocelyn Jimenez; DFA OVS Vice Chairman Edgardo Castro; Regional Finance Officer Lawrence Reyes; Marketing Communications Creative Director Jay Dustin Santiago; and one of the brand ambassadors, Cathy Yang.

Ian Veneracion Places His Trust Only to His Newfound Love - Ascof Lagundi

Heartthrob dad Ian Veneracion prefers Ascof Forte Menthol Syrup as his remedy for cough and bronchial asthma because of its “hagod-menthol” soothing effect, which gives quick relief from sore and itchy throat

At age 42, gentleman actor and reluctant heartthrob Ian Veneracion appears to be a star whose time has come. Although he started acting at the age of 5, Ian’s career took a long, circuitous route to leading man status, something he finally achieved when he was cast as a swoon-worthy hero in hit TV soaps.

Today he seems unstoppable, his career trajectory leading him to a place that much younger and more aggressive actors have yet to reach.

Ironically, it is from this enviable place that Ian now seeks balance even as he appreciates the perks of stardom. He has kept the debonair good looks that make fans - age 18 to 80 - swoon, yes, but the Gen X actor now finds fulfillment in matters that are more constant and stable, and less transitory.

This probably has much to do with being married to a loving wife and having three wonderful children. Veneracion readily affirms that there is always more to life than the glitz of show business.

Forty is like, you spent the first half of your life trying to learn who you want to be. You did stuff that you wanted to try out. At age 40, ‘yun ‘yung complete na - you know who you are, you know what’s right and wrong, you have your own values. For me, it’s just the start of the flight. When you reach this age, you know exactly where you’re coming from, where you’re at, and where you’re going.

Ian then gently asserts, “Life is my priority, not work.” This gives clarity to his life decisions. Like why maintaining a healthy lifestyle is of tremendous importance to him, and why he always makes sure that he is at his best and healthiest self.  With a broader understanding of himself, Ian has come to prioritize his health and wellbeing above anything else and has become more discerning of his life choices. That is why for his cough remedy, Ian places his trust only in Ascof Lagundi, especially now that the rainy season is here and respiratory ailments are very common.

Ascof Lagundi, the innovative and pioneering cough remedy in the Philippines, is made from 100 percent organically grown Lagundi leaves, making it a natural, safe, and effective relief for cough and bronchial asthma.

Ian says that it is for this reason that he immediately accepted the offer to become Ascof’s newest official endorser. “It’s something that I actually take. When my manager informed me that Ascof wanted to sign me up as its endorser, I said, ‘Perfect! Just last week I had Ascof Lagundi in my bag.’ I definitely believe in the product.”

The actor likewise shares that he takes Ascof Lagundi Forte Menthol even during tapings and shoots, and encourages others like him to choose Ascof as the preferred option over chemical medicines and other similar natural remedies for cough.

You can trust Ascof Lagundi. It’s a natural remedy that you may take even at the onset of a cough, and when you are just starting to show its early symptoms. Hindi ka matatakot kasi safe siya,” he assures everyone.

Ian uses the variant Ascof Lagundi Forte Menthol Syrup, either sugar-free or regular, because of its ‘hagod-menthol’ soothing effect on the throat. “There are other variants both for kids and adults, but my personal favorite is ASCOF Forte Menthol Sugar Free Syrup because it actually gives me instant relief from sore and itchy throat due to cough,” he explains.

Pascual Laboratories, the manufacturer of Ascof Lagundi, has its own lagundi farm in Nueva Ecija that uses a GMP-certified production process to cultivate the traditional herbal plant. Ascof Lagundi Forte Menthol is a product of scientific research and clinical studies.

Ian considers Ascof Lagundi as his newfound love since it is always there when he needs it most. “Getting enough sleep and eating properly are important to keep your body healthy. Pero kapag tinamaan kayo ng cough, of course you should take Ascof Lagundi.”

For inquiries and more details about Ascof Lagundi Forte Menthol Syrup, visit their official Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ASCOFLagundi or their official website at http://www.pascuallab.com/index.php/ascof.
