Coney Reyes Stars in CBN Asia’s Holy Week Special "Wanda’s Wonderful World"

Award-winning actress, television host, and producer Coney Reyes as Wanda searches for love as she tries to fill the void in her heart left by a traumatic experience she had when she was young.

Catch her as she gives life to the character of Wanda in CBN Asia’s Holy Week special Wanda’s Wonderful World, on Good Friday, March 30, 11 p.m. at ABS-CBN.

Coney plays the character of Wanda, the CEO of a well-renowned events company, Wanda’s Wonderful World. She thirsts for love and looks for it in all the wrong places.

Actually, Wanda is sort of a complicated character. But if you dig deep down in her heart, it’s actually simple why she is the way she is. She was a neglected child, so because of that there were certain things she was yearning for in her life,” Coney explained.

One of the things that Coney could relate to was Wanda’s conversations with God. “Not that I questioned God but I would often talk to God,” she said. “I made a lot of ‘not-so- healthy’ and ‘not-so- godly decisions’ and because of that I ended up with a lot of mess in my personal life. But when I met the Lord Jesus and I really just surrendered my life to Him, everything turned around because God works things out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose,” she added.

Wanda’s Wonderful World’s story is a product of the wonderful imagination of CBN Asia’s Special Projects Manager Icko Gonzalez.

Watch Coney Reyes along with other veteran actors Tirso Cruz III and Ricky Davao as CBN Asia presents Wanda’s Wonderful World, a story that will surely satisfy your yearning for love and purpose, on March 30, Good Friday, 11 p.m. at ABS-CBN.

Multi-Awarded Sci-Fi Horror Movie “Ghost Land” Set to Hit Philippine Theaters on March 31, Black Saturday

Soaking in the glory of multiple awards, the thrill-seeking horror “Ghostland” (aka Incident in a Ghost Land)  is set to show us why it’s captivating and mind-boggling story is a must-watch horror film this 2018. With versatile actress Crystal Reed (“Teen Wolf”) as the main lead.

The film begins with a mother and her two daughters inheriting an old house, during their first night in their new home, murderers enter the home, putting Colleen in a situation where she must fight to save her daughters’ lives. When the girls suffer a terrible trauma during the night, their disparate personalities diverge even further.

The eldest daughter, Beth (Reed), becomes a famous horror author with a perfect family and life in Los Angeles, while her sister, Vera (Anastasia Philips), can’t cope, and loses her mind to an unshakable sense of paranoia. Sixteen years later the daughters and mother reunite at the house where Colleen and Vera continue to reside. It is then that strange events begin to take place.

Filled with horrific sound effects, jump scares and scary dolls, it leads us to ask ourselves, are our own demons define the horror in our lives? Or do the horror stories exist beyond the lines of fiction books?

The film won the Public Prize and the Grand Prize at the 2018 Festival international du film fantastique de Gérardmer, a horror and science-fiction film festival held in France since 1994.

Director Pascal Laugier who also directed the 2009 critically-acclaimed horror film “Martyrs” can’t wait for the public to see his newest masterpiece.  ‘“Incident In A Ghost Land”’ is also the expression of the return of the repressed and perhaps of my ‘darkest side,”

“Beth lives with their ghosts, they speak to her, she wants to join them in excellence. I feel like this type of admiration and self-construction for someone in a society that is very derision-driven and tends to make the feeling of admiration somewhat ridiculous. “said Laugier.

The film co-stars Emilia Jones (“Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides”), Anastasia Philips (“Lucky 7”), Taylor Hickson (“Deadpool”), and Mylene Farmer.

"Ghostland" is set to scare everyone to their seats starting March 31 (Black Saturday) and is distributed by Axinite Digicinema.

Rooney Mara Portrays a New, Revisionist Version of "Mary Magdalene," Showing in PH Theaters on March 21

Two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) stars in the titular role of Universal Pictures' new Biblical drama Mary Magdalene (in Philippine cinemas March 21).

Watch the new Mary Magdalene footage featuring Rooney Mara at https://youtu.be/l7b2exWNOMY.

Directed by Garth Davis (Lion) and also stars Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice) and Chiwetel Eijofor (12 Years a Slave), Mary Magdalene is the story of a young woman who leaves her small fishing village and family to join a new movement. Inspired by its charismatic leader, Jesus of Nazareth (Phoenix), and his teachings, Mary sets out with the disciples on the journey to Jerusalem, where she finds herself at the centre of the founding story of Christianity.

For Mara, the film opened her eyes to a new and different way of reading a belief system that formed an important part of her childhood. "I went to Catholic school so I had a lot of preconceived notions about the story and about religion in general,” she explains. “The first time I read the script, it was with a very cynical outlook. Then I spoke with Garth and I understood what kind of film he was making; he got me to look at the story in a different way so the second time I read it, I saw a lot of opportunity and a lot of beauty in it. I thought this was a great opportunity to tell a version of the story that we hadn't seen before.

Most other films about Jesus are solely about him, and this time the film is about Mary Magdalene,” continues Mara. “We still see all of the things that we're used to seeing in biblical films, but we see it through her eyes. And seeing it through her eyes, we get to see it in a very different light. Mary Magdalene is known by most people to be a prostitute, which isn't true; we get to see where she comes from and who she really is."

As she’s presented in the film even before she meets Jesus, Mary is a very strong, independent and, in some ways, a modern woman - still unmarried despite being in her early 20s and working with her family of fishermen As Mara explains, "We first meet Mary while she's living in Magdala with her family and she is very different to everyone in her family. Her family are pushing her to get married and have children, as she’s already considered old, and to do what a woman is expected to do. She’s really resistant to that. I think she really loves the fishing work and she feels very connected to God in a way that she can't really understand and that she wants to explore more. She's always felt very different to everyone else and feels she’s never been listened to, so when Jesus comes along he's the first person who understands what she's feeling. She’s brave enough to leave her family behind and follow him."

One of the toughest scenes for Mara was the exorcism scene. Before leaving Magdala to follow Jesus, Mary’s family call on an exorcist to perform an exorcism on her. It is an act of love, the family believes. Davis explains: “They can’t understand Mary's personality or her choices - they just see it as the demon. The tragic thing about the scene is the family are doing it because they think I’ll make her better but, in fact, they're just driving her further away. It could have been a very dark and dramatic scene but instead it became something very complex.“

"That scene was really brutal, especially because of the way Garth chose to portray the family,“ says Mara. “He’d created a very loving environment and family. They all care deeply about each other so when the exorcism comes it's that much more heart-breaking. It doesn't feel like a cliched version of the bad guys versus the good guys. They really love her, they think they're doing what's best for her."

While the scene was being shot, the cast and crew underwent a bizarre and unsettling experience. “We all had a copy of one of the ancient texts as we were preparing for the scene,” says Davis, “and almost the minute we started walking into the water, the wind just stopped. Completely. There was no movement. And then lightning started breaking all around us. It freaked everyone out! An interesting moment of life mirroring art.

Mary Magdalene is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
