Globe Studios Produced Film “Dead Kids” Makes History as First Filipino Netflix Original Film

After 'Birdshot' and 'Eerie,' another Mikhail Red helmed film is making it to Netflix.

Globe Studios partners with Netflix to bring Filipino film 'Dead Kids' exclusively to the global internet entertainment service.

Dead Kids is a story based on true events, that touches on an exciting mix of friendship, coming-of-age, thriller, and crime rolled into one, societal eye-opening movie.

The cast is composed of several young actors including Sue Ramirez, Khalil Ramos, Markus Paterson, Vance Larena, alongside rising young stars Kelvin Miranda, Gabby Padilla, and Jan Silverio.

Director Mikhail Red said, "It has always been my dream as a filmmaker to bring Filipino cinema to a global audience. I am so glad and honored for Dead Kids to be a Netflix Film, which is a testament to the world-class talent here in the Philippines. Netflix is the perfect platform for the film to gain international spotlight, and we wouldn't be here without the hard work and determination of our cast, crew, and of course, Globe Studios. I hope people around the world will appreciate Dead Kids, and I hope this also helps open doors for more Filipino filmmakers."

"In our commitment to provide a variety of content that span geographical and cultural borders, Dead Kids brings our members around the world closer to the Philippines by experiencing a story that is written, shot, and produced completely in the Philippines, showcasing local Filipino talent, and based on events that would resonate with viewers both in the Philippines and abroad," said Raphael Phang, Manager of Content Acquisition for SEA at Netflix.

Ernest Cu, President and CEO of Globe said, "We have been working with Netflix since they first launched in the Philippines. Since then, we've celebrated a number of milestones together, including making Netflix more easily accessible for Filipino viewers through pre-paid promotions, video data plans, and an integrated billing option, as well as our first content partnership when they acquired Birdshot in 2018. It is our greatest honor that they chose Globe Studios' Dead Kids to be a Netflix Film, and I can't wait to see what everyone says about it."

Dead Kids tells a compelling story about a socially awkward teen who bonds with a group of misfits who plots to take out the school's arrogant rich kid, that is until their kidnapping scheme turns deadly. Dead Kids is set to premiere on Netflix later this year.

#UAAPSeason82 Goes “All for More” on Digital

Dunks. Clutch baskets. Explosions. Name it and you've seen it in UAAP Season 82.

The UAAP, which fans follow on S+A, LIGA, sports.abs-cbn.com, and iWant, delivers action, captivates Filipinos, and generates international buzz.

While the UAAP has always been trending on social media, this season is shaping up to be special in terms of online engagement across all ABS-CBN Sports social media platforms.

On the ABS-CBN Sports Facebook page (1.3M followers), UAAP-related posts from August 26 to September 16 generated a total of 168 million impressions and 1.5 million interactions. Engagement was especially high on September 4 during the UP-FEU game. In this game, UP Fighting Maroon Ricci Rivero announced his return to the UAAP with a ridiculous alley-oop dunk that went viral, bringing in 7.8 million views and almost 400,000 interactions to the page.

Rivero's highlight did not just end up on the Facebook timelines and news feeds of Filipino basketball fans, as global sports media outlets like Bleacher Report, Yahoo Sports, and Ballislife shared ABS-CBN Sports' video of the dunk for the whole world to see.

Other UAAP first round highlights featuring UP's Kobe Paras, UST's Rhenz Abando, and DLSU's Jamie Malonzo also generated millions of views and thousands of comments on Facebook with fans praising the athleticism of players and the intensity of action early in the season.

"UAAP fans enjoy watching highlights for two reasons," veteran sports anchor Mico Halili, who also serves as ABS-CBN Sports' digital head, says. "They watched the game and want to relive and share the exciting moment with friends, or they missed the game and want to catch up on what everyone on social is talking about. We're here to give UAAP fans what they want on digital."

It's the same story on ABS-CBN Sports Twitter (1.3M followers) where fans get real-time updates and highlights of the games. Twitter engagement shot up to never before seen levels for UAAP-related posts. Within August 28 to September 24 this year, there have been 77.4 million impressions and 1.93 million profile visits recorded on the platform.

ABS-CBN Sports Instagram account also experienced a surge with its followers and engagement growing at a faster pace. Users are drawn to click and watch highlight videos on the account with poster-like thumbnails featuring UAAP stars. UAAP athletes themselves like and share the content on the platform, which now has 170k followers.

While most of the credit rightfully goes to awesome play of all eight teams in the UAAP,  the enhanced quality of the content created by the ABS-CBN Sports Digital team also helps fuel social media engagement.

Beyond the highlights, the digital team also serves fans with original content that makes the UAAP experience even more engaging online. Leading to the opening of UAAP Season 82, the ABS-CBN Sports Digital team launched several originals to put fans in UAAP mode: "MIXTAPE" featured memorable moments from UAAP Season 81 and "#KillerCrossover" allowed UAAP stars to share their passions outside of basketball.

During the first round of UAAP Season 82, fans on ABS-CBN Sports social media platforms watched and shared digital features on breakout games by Rey Suerte of UE, Val Chauca of Adamson, and Dave Ildefonso of NU and thrilling games like the Ateneo-UST first round showdown.

Halili reveals that there is both art and science behind the UAAP engagement generated by ABS-CBN Sports on social media.

"The main ingredient is capturing fun, dramatic and exciting moments from the games," he shared. "Guided by our love for sports, the data provided by our analytics team, and our mission to serve the fan, we choose what storylines to focus on and decide how to share these stories in the best way. When we select highlights or write captions, the key for ABS-CBN Sports is to know what UAAP fans want."

ABS-CBN Sports is the sports arm of the country's leading media and entertainment organization, which is rapidly transitioning into an agile digital company with the biggest online presence among local media networks and a growing list of digital platforms.

Meanwhile, UAAP Season 82 men's basketball enters the second round on October 5. Fans can watch the games live on ABS-CBN S+A on free TV, on LIGA on cable, and online via iWant or sports.abs-cbn.com. Enjoy more of the UAAP experience by following @ABSCBNSports on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, or by visiting sports.abs-cbn.com.

Sarah Geronimo’s Wish Comes True via the Dog Movie “Unforgettable”

One more dream has come true for Sarah Geronimo. The Popstar Royalty and Box Office Queen is starring in a full-length dog movie, a project which she has long wanted to do. Conceptualized and co-directed by the multi-awarded and internationally acclaimed director Jun Lana (Die Beautiful, Bwakaw) and award-winning filmmaker Perci Intalan (Bwakaw, Distance, Dementia), and featuring Milo, the Jack Russell Terrier with numerous viral videos, this Viva Films presentation promises to be truly "Unforgettable".

Sarah plays Jasmine, a young woman on a journey to Baguio. Her goal is to bring Happy to her sick grandmother. The moment Happy came into Jasmine's life, the dog proved to be a blessing. Now Jasmine believes that Happy would be instrumental to her grandmother's healing.

As the two make their way to the City of Pines, they meet different kinds of people. With Jasmine's sharp memory and Happy's remarkable skills, they are able to help people somehow, touching lives in every place they pass by. And every step brings them closer to the person whose life Jasmine wants to save the most.

"Iba siyang magmahal" goes the tagline of "Unforgettable". The movie shows that special human-animal bond, compassion for our fellowmen, and the willingness to go the extra mile for our family – different kinds of love that make a mark in the mind and in the heart.

"It's a different role. Very challenging for me," Sarah said in an interview after winning the Best Actress award from the PMPC Star Awards for her role in "Miss Granny". Popsters need not worry because their idol always gives her best in her performances. Director Jun Lana said so himself on his Twitter post on June 6th: "I know Sarah just won Best Actress. But her performance today is a whole new level of brilliance. #onetakeactress #unforgettableday2"

The incredible tricks of Milo are certainly something to look forward to in this movie. This wonder dog also starred in Vice Ganda's box office hit, "Fantastica". As early as 2017, Milo has been appearing in various TV programs, showcasing his ability to play dead, roll, spin nonstop, jump through his master's arms, remove his master's socks, do a massage, and even pray before eating! No wonder Sarah said that she was always excited about going to the set and seeing Milo. Milo was only 2 months old when his owner Daryl Tristan Huertas started to train him.

As if the Sarah-Milo tandem is not enough, big stars like Regine Velasquez, Anne Curtis, Cherie Gil, Tirso Cruz III, Yayo Aguila, Ara Mina, Kim Molina, Meg Imperial and Gina Pareño complete the cast.

Witness unforgettable love in "Unforgettable". This could be that kind of movie you'll remember for the rest of your life.

Opens in cinemas on October 23, 2019.

“Star Wars” Hero Oscar Isaac Spooks as Gomez in “The Addams Family”

Popularly known as the Resistance pilot 'Poe Dameron' in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Oscar Isaac now provides the voice of Gomez, the patriarch of The Addams Family, first animated comedy about the kookiest family on the block.

Debonair, charismatic and mischievous, Gomez Addams is dedicated to his children, madly in love with his wife Morticia – and also just plain mad. His favorite ways to relax are a tightened clamp set on his temple, and a vigorous round of ninja-level swordplay.

Like most people, Isaac was familiar with the classic "Family Addams" TV shows and films, but had a more personal connection. "Raul Julia was one of my favorite actors, and to see him play Gomez with such relish definitely made an impression on me when I was young," says Isaac. "To get to play that role as an homage to him has been really special."

With so many Addams Family projects, directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan strove to differentiate their characters from previous iterations, from their voices to their storylines. "We wanted everyone to try to come up with their own version of these characters," says Vernon.

Gomez got the strongest revamp, thanks to the original cartoons. "In all the other iterations, Gomez was a fit, thin, kind of dashing, handsome man and in the cartoons, he was never portrayed that way," says Tiernan. "We're not portraying him as a schlub — he dresses well, he has panache and style, but he's shorter than Morticia. He's got that plastic-comb moustache and the strange hair. So, he is a little stranger looking in our version, because that's the way he was in the cartoons."

"What I loved about the original drawings is that there was always this funny way of throwing the family man on his head, you know?" says Isaac. "Gomez is a very passionate, romantic character filled with a lot of bombast and big declarations, so it's really fun to just attack that kind of energy. But ultimately, he's a real family man and that's just been really fun to embody. I love also portraying a man that large that is also so nimble."

A father himself, Isaac counts his young son amongst the new Addams Family audience. "I'm excited to get to share this with him," says Isaac. "I think it's just going to not only bring in the fans of the original but also make a lot of new ones."

In Philippine cinemas October 30The Addams Family is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk's Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar-winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick's Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee) and a headstrong parrot (Oscar-winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle's most trusted advisor and confidante.

The film also stars Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen (The Queen ) and Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent and features additional voice performances from Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, Frances de la Tour, Carmen Ejogo, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, and Craig Robinson.

Dolittle is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.
