Duterte Renews GMA-7 Franchise for 25 Years, Plans to Block ABS-CBN's Franchise Renewal

President Rodrigo Duterte, on April 21, has signed Republic Act (RA) No. 10925 last April 21, which grants the renewal of franchise of Republic Broadcasting System, Inc., which is now known as GMA Network for 25 years.

The law also requires the Kapuso Network to provide free public service time to the government in relaying important public announcements and warnings.

The free public service time should be equivalent of 10% of all its ad time.

The RA 10925 reads: "The franchise shall be subject to amendment, alteration, or repeal by the Congress of the Philippines when the public interest requires and shall not be interpreted as an exclusive grant of the privileges herein provided for.

"The grantee, its successors or assignees shall comply with the applicable labor standards under existing labor laws, rules and regulations and such other issuance as may be promulgated by the Department of Labor and Employment, taking into consideration the nature and peculiarities of the broadcast industry."

Meanwhile, Duterte said he would block the renewal of ABS-CBN's franchise and accused the Kapamilya network of "swindling" for supposedly not airing his political ad that was already paid during the campaign period last year.

Asked if he would block the renewal of ABS-CBN's franchise, he said: "Yes."

"If ganoon ka kaano, you're engaged in swindling for all we know ilang kompanya dito na hindi n'yo pinalabas. If you operate, ABS-CBN, tapos manloloko lang kayo ng tao, mag-swindling kayo, I have to stop you, 'di ba?" he told reporters in an ambush interview in Malacañang.

The franchise has been there for 25 years. The law said it's okay, only if you adhere to journalistic standards," he said.

ABS-CBN's franchise will expire on March 30, 2020.

Dengue Vaccine DENGXAVIA Now Available Over-the-Counter at WATSONS, Vaccination Locations and Schedules Released

Fact: Dengue is one of the major health issues in the country, with the virus affecting kids more than adults.

Fact: In 2015, there were over 200,000 dengue cases in the country, with around 1,000 cases resulting in death.

Myth: People have the misconception that once a person has suffered dengue fever before, it will not be able to recur.

Myth: There is no specific drug or vaccine to protect against dengue fever.

Medical science had a significant milestone late in 2015 when the world's first-ever dengue vaccine was approved for human use. It took almost two decades of research to formulate DENGXAVIA, the dengue vaccine manufactured by French pharmaceutical company, Sanofi Pasteur.

When the vaccine was approved, the Philipines became the first country in Asia to use the vaccine. In 2016, the Department of Health (DOH) rolled out a government-sponsored vaccination program against dengue for public school students in the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon, and CALABARZON, areas that recorded the highest number of cases.

And now, WATSONS, an international health care and beauty care chain, will be the first retailer to conduct a vaccination program against dengue in 108 of their stores.

Dengvaxia comes in three doses, given at six-month intervals and doctors will be present in select Watsons stores to administer the vaccine.

Watsons's three-part series of dengue vaccinations will be on:

BATCH 1: April 30 (first shot); October 29 (second); April 29, 2018 (third).

BATCH 2: May 14, (first shot); November 12 (second); and May 13, 2018 (third).

For the list of participating Watsons stores, click HERE

Watsons health business director Danilo Chiong clarified that the vaccine is only available in the listed Watsons stores that will participate in the vaccination schedules. He explained the vaccine would be administered on site and only by their doctor on the set dates because the vaccines have "specific handling and cold chain storage requirements." In short, you cannot buy the vaccine, and take it your doctor.

The vaccine would be administered on listed Watsons stores by their doctor on the set dates because the vaccines have "specific handling and cold chain storage requirements." You cannot buy the vaccine, and take it your doctor.

While the vaccine is already available in private hospitals, Watsons offers the vaccine at P4,000 per dose for a total of P12,000 for the complete cycle. Our research indicates Watsons rate per dose is lower than those sold in hospitals, but Chiong could not confirm, pointing out that the company "is not aware of how much doctors,  hospitals, and clinics are charging for the vaccine."

"We are offering the best price possible for our customers," he says, adding that Watsons partnered with BDO so patients can use their credit card to pay by installment with no interest.

Dengvaxia can be administered to patients ages 9 to 45. Patients who have had dengue in the past can still get the vaccine, explains Dr. Rontgene Solante, a medical expert on infectious diseases, to Inquirer. However, the DOH advises that the vaccine is not for pregnant or breastfeeding women, and individial who have a weakend immune system or are sick at the time of the vaccination. It's also not recommended for invidiuals who are allergic to the ingredients, so you have to check with your family physician first beforehand.

Recipients of the vaccine will be reminded every six months of their next dosage. Each vaccine costs P4,000 or a total of P12,000 for the full cycle.

Dr. Solante explains how the vaccine works when you've been bitten by a mosquito that carries dengue. "If you get bitten [by a mosquito], you won’t get the symptoms - headache, fever, decrease in platelet count and abdominal pain. If you have a mild type of dengue, the fever will disappear in three or four days. The platelet count will not be too low. [The vaccine] can prevent severe dengue or thrombocytopenia, the lowest platelet count of under 50,000.” The vaccine could also lower the chance of transmission, or infect other people.

The vaccine contains inactivated components of dengue virus. When it is administered to an individual, he can exhibit symptoms (as mentioned above) so the body can produce antibodies to protect you against it. According to the DOH, it's normal to experience these symptoms after getting the vaccine: headache, muscle pain, pain, redness, itching, or swelling at the injection site, feeling unwell and weak, and fever.

Based on the clinical trials Sanofi Pasteur conducted in several countries, including the Philipines, the vaccine helps reduce the risk of hospitalization by 80 percent, and lessens the possibility of developing a more severe form of the disease (internal bleeding for example) by 93 percent. According to a study by the University of the Philippines National Institute of Health (UP-NIH), the vaccine is expected to reduce dengue cases in the country by over 24 percent in a span of five years.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two-thirds of the 400 million people who are infected by dengue fever worldwide are in Asia. As of February 2017, the vaccine has been approved in 14 countries where dengue is endemic, including Singapore, Mexico, Brazil, and the Philippines.

The Philippines has the seventh highest number of dengue cases worldwide, says Dr. Solante. “This vaccine is important in places where dengue is highly endemic, like the Philippines. DOH can’t afford to vaccinate everyone, so we need the help of the private sector. In other countries, vaccination is an important health program. Prevention reflects the health of a community. " he said.

"Destined To Be Yours" to Get the Axe Due to Poor Ratings

GMA Network's Senior Vice President for Entertainment TV Ms. Lilybeth G. Rasonable sent GMANetwork.com and DestinedToBeYours.com.ph her official statement regarding GMA Creative Unit Head Suzette Doctolero's tweets saying the GMA Telebabad show "Destined To Be Yours" featuring Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza's tandem is a huge flop.

Watch:

"Her tweets are her personal opinions and not those of the Network. We will deal with her separately and privately," Ms. Rasonable wrote.

She also assured that the show is not a flop.

"Destined To Be Yours' average rating from pilot episode to present is higher than competition. Alden and Maine's chemistry has become more and more evident as the story progresses and this makes the scenes more kilig than ever. As producers, how can we not be happy with a winning show?" she said.

Ms. Rasonable also denied that the show will be cut short.

"DTBY's story was really written to end in May. It is NOT being shortened. We fixed the schedule kasi that after the soap, they will already start shooting for the movie," she clarified.

Destined To Be Yours is Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza's first teleserye together. It airs from Monday to Friday, after Encantadia on GMA Telebabad. - GMANetwork.com

Tunog Natin: Songs From Home, an advocacy campaign for Original Pilipino Music (OPM) by Avida Land in collaboration with Insight 360 Consultancy Services, Inc., won two major awards at the 52nd Anvil Awards Gabi ng Parangal held last March 10 at the Rizal Ballroom of the Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

Tunog Natin: Songs From Home featured promising and established OPM artists, Jim Paredes—also the campaign's creative consultant—, Bloomfields, Davey Langit, Moira Dela Torre, Thor Dulay, Markki Stroem, Princess Velasco, Johnoy Danao, Jason Fernandez and Jaq Dionisio.

The compilation album, launched in a concert in 2015, is composed of ten tracks—one original composition (Home is Here) and nine brilliant covers of classic Filipino songs (Tuloy Pa Rin Ako, Next In Line, Tuwing Umuulan, Hawak Kamay, Kaleidoscope World, With a Smile, Pinoy Ako, Cool Ka Lang, and Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika). Songs were arranged by Jonathan Arnold Ong of Sonic State Studio, while Takayuki Sakamoto and Angel Jose Resurrection were the production managers of the album.

Pinoy Actor Dave Bautista Back as Drax in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

For Fil-Am actor Dave Bautista (Spectre, upcoming Blade Runner 2049), returning to the Guardians fold in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a chance to reprise a character he truly enjoys playing.

"What I really love about Drax is he's not what you'd expect from reading the comics," Bautista says. "Everybody was expecting one thing, and we gave them another. It makes it more interesting. It's easy just to be the big guy who's always growling at people and intimidating people. We've seen it a million times. But when you get the same guy who looks the same way but just says the most ridiculous things that make you laugh, it makes him more interesting."

Continuing, he adds, "And he's also got that side to him that's just all heart. He's still heartbroken over the loss of his family. And I love that dynamic, man. I love playing with that. It's challenging. It makes it's interesting. It makes the character loveable and it makes people connect to him."

In the movie, Drax develops a friendship with a new character, Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff. Describing their relationship, Bautista says, "It's hard to think that Drax would have some innocence to him but he really does, and it comes out in this film. That's in the connection he has with Mantis. There's a lot of innocence in both characters. They're almost like two kids who find each other and become playmates. They just connect on a certain level that they can't connect with anybody else. They're both suffering from some pain and learning new things and new feelings, new experiences. They're going through that together and that's where the connection is."

The opportunity to work with Chris Pratt again was a plus for Bautista. "On a personal level, I think everybody involved on this film will agree that we just love him," Bautista says. "He's just such a good dude; a good, kind-hearted person. I can't say enough good things about him. He is what you see. There's nothing superficial or pretentious about Chris. He's just got a great energy about him and he's a very positive person. And that all trickles down. When you get number one coming to set who's always in a good mood, it's hard to be that guy who is in the bad mood or complaining."

Working with director James Gunn once again proves to be a positive experience for the actor. "It's great because the writer is there and the director is there, all in one person," says Bautista.

He adds, "Drax is the vehicle for James Gunn's twisted, witty sense of humor. I love when I'm shooting and delivering stuff that I can hear James off in the distance laughing because I know that it is what he wanted. That it is what he was expecting out of the dialogue that he wrote. That in itself makes me feel really good because I love giving him what he wants."

Bautista is confident that audiences will connect to the film on a personal level. As he says, "The first film was more about people coming together for the greater good. And I think this film is more about relationships with people. It is the story of a family. Your family doesn't always have to be blood family. They can be chosen family. So I think this is more of a relationship film, and everyone can relate to that."

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Opening across the Philippines on April 26, 2017, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is distributed in the Philippines by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
