Richard Gutierrez Slaps by BIR with Multiple Tax Evasion-Related Cases

Richard Gutierrez is facing yet another tax-related case after the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) filed new charges against him for allegedly submitting fake documents in connection with his ongoing tax evasion case.

The new complaint charges Richard of one count of knowingly using/submitting fake or falsified annual income tax return (ITR) for taxable year 2012; six counts of knowingly using/submitting fake or falsified quarterly value-added tax (VAT) returns for the second, third, and fourth quarters of 2012; two counts of knowingly using/submitting perjured affidavits during the preliminary investigation of his tax case; and four counts of attempting to make it appear he or another has filed his annual ITR and quarterly VAT returns.

The tax case involves Richard’s R Gutz Production, which produces and markets films and TV shows.

The "La Luna Sangre" star submitted the subject documents to the DOJ on July 18, 2017, with official receipt stamps from the BIR Revenue District Office No. 42-San Juan City. However, the receiving officer appearing in the stamps, Renato Agana, has denied receiving of the returns.

There is a stamp ‘received' in the documents; we traced that there’s a name there, the person who allegedly received it (returns) has denied receiving that. It’s not his signature there, and the stamp that he used isn’t the stamp that is used in that office… all that point that these documents submitted are fake,” said BIR Assistant Commissioner James Roldan.

The BIR added: “Gutierrez used fake and falsified tax returns to secure the dismissal of the tax evasion case against R Gutz Production Corporation,” and resorted to the “scheme” to evade payment of the required taxes.

In its tax case against the actor, the BIR alleged he underdeclared R Gutz’s income for 2012 by P39.51 million.

The BIR placed Richards’s income tax liability at P27.45 million, and his VAT liabilities at P11.12 million, or a total of P38.57 million in tax delinquencies.

The actor’s lawyer, Marie Glen Garduque, said they have yet to receive a copy of the new complaint.
As far as Richard is concerned said documents have the original stamped received from the BIR. At any rate, Richard will just answer as soon as he receives the copy of the complaint,” Garduque said.

UKG Celebrates 10th Anniversay with "NanayCon" this August 18 in Taguig

ABS-CBN’s award-winning morning program “Umagang Kay Ganda” (UKG) is going all-out for mothers on its 10th anniversary with a lineup of offerings for the nation’s homemakers including a “Nanay Convention,” a “Nanay Manual,” and a new segment in the show featuring smart and talented moms called “Nanay Kong Ganda,” which will debut in October.

The country’s well-loved morning show kicked-off its “Nanay Convention” series in Pampanga last July 3 and is now headed to Taguig City this Friday (August 18) to gather mommies for a day filled with new knowledge and tips on how to care for and protect one’s family.

In the previous convention, anchor Gretchen Ho started it off with a simple workout to energize the crowd, followed by cooking demos with Chef Tatung and Winnie Cordero, a fashion and beauty talk with Renee Salud and Amy Perez, and a disaster preparedness seminar led by Atom Araullo,  Anthony Taberna, and Jorge Cariño. Ariel Ureta also brought the popular “Di Bati” segment of the show, where the anchors exchange views on a common issue in families or communities. Participants also enjoyed free haircut, massage, and facials, plus fun games and raffle prizes courtesy of the program’s sponsors and partner organizations.

“UKG” also launched during the convention the “Nanay Manual,” a free booklet containing recipes, kitchen hacks, and home safety and management tips that the program created with the help of ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc.

The program is also set to introduce a search for outstanding mothers called “Nanay Kong Kay Ganda,” a follow-up to its successful 2016 segment “Gwapulis,” which showcased the wit, good looks, and talent of Filipino policemen. “UKG” will be on the lookout for possible contestants during the different legs of the its “Nanay Convention.”

Through these activities, the decade-long morning show hopes to further help and support mothers, which are the program’s partners in making each morning bright and happy for Filipino families.

As for the program’s anchors, “UKG” has already become a home for them too, with their fellow anchors and the show’s staff and crew as their family.

Waking up for ‘Umagang Kay Ganda’ gives us happiness in itself. We are all family here. Even if we aren’t live on air yet, we already carry positive vibes which translates to our work. The positive energy is really inspiring and it sets the mood for our entire day,” shared Anthony, who has been on the show for a long time.

Amy also attested to the tight bond among the show’s anchors, who are able to share with each other their personal triumphs and problems. “All of us are going through something in our lives but since we are in a morning show, we have to always show positivity to our viewers. So it’s good that during commercial breaks we also get to check on each other,” she said.

While one of the newer hosts in the show, Jorge shared his amazement at how easy it has been to get along with everyone. “Here you bump into someone and you feel like you know each other very well, like childhood friends. That was the kind of treatment they gave me…People would mistake us as friends who have known each other for a long time. It’s magical for me,” he explained.

Atom, meanwhile, also expressed how he remains excited to do the show, no matter how hard it is to wake up very early. “It’s a nice feeling to start the day early because you feel that there’s still a lot you can do in the day. You also get to be a part of other people’s morning. So, it’s kind of a win-win situation.”

Together with the program’s other hosts like Long Mejia, K Brosas, Marlo Mortel, Dominique Roque, and Tina Marasigan, the show is committed to be of service to millions of Filipinos for decades to come.

Apart from consistently leading the early morning timeslot based on data from Kantar Media, “UKG” has also received many awards in the past 10 years, including “Best Morning Show” from UPLB Gandingan Awards and the 2nd Golden Laurel Awards of LPU Batangas in 2017.

James Corden Lends Voice to Hi-5 in "The Emoji Movie"

British comedian James Corden (Into the Woods) lends his voice to Hi-5, an open-face palm Emoji ready to give you a Hi-5 at any time, in Sony Pictures Animation's new comedy The Emoji Movie.

His favorite catchphrase? "Hi-Five!"

In the film, Hi-5's a big ham, brimming over with exuberant confidence. He used to be a Favorite, a highly respected celebrity. But recently Hi-5 has been usurped by a new Favorite… Fist Bump Emoji. Hi-5 can't stand the rejection and just wants to be popular again. But his adventure with Gene – an Emoji which has EVERY expression instead of just one - makes Hi-5 realize that it's more important to have one true friend than it is to be popular.

"Hi-5 is a fading rock star who wants to get back on top," says director-writer Tony Leondis. "He hopes that by going on this journey with Gene he can be popular again. What he learns along the way is that having one real friend is more important than having ten thousand likes."

James Corden gave the filmmakers a hand in bringing the character to life. "He's such a talent. A brilliant actor and writer. When I saw the play 'One Man, Two Guvnors,' I was blown away and really wanted to work with him someday," Leondis says. "Hi-5 is the wild card – you never know what he's going to do or say. He's always throwing curveballs into the equation. And no one is better at that than James."

"Hi-5 used to be one of the favorites, but as time has gone by, Alex has forgotten about Hi-5, and he started using Fist Bump," says Corden. "He feels like he's been forgotten, and he's convinced that if Alex could just see him again on the Favorites board, Alex would remember how great Hi-5 is and start using him again."

Corden was drawn to the story and the way it created a hidden world behind the popular icons. "You can punctuate any moment with a great emoji," he says. "In the film these are characters with spirits, and souls, and hearts, and minds with something very, very real at stake for all of them."

"I thought it sounded quite charming – these things that you use in your life all the time have a personality, something to lose, and real friendships," concludes Corden. "That felt very fun to me."

Opening across the Philippines on August 23, The Emoji Movie is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Kapuso Primetime King Dingdong Dantes returns as Pepe de Jesus, a former vigilante known as Robin Hood and is now a full-fledged lawyer that mostly takes on pro bono cases to help the poor and the oppressed.

Dingdong shares that they're doubling all their efforts to create a good show. "Kapag sinabi mong part two, whatever you saw last season kailangan mag double up in terms of the drama, the action, sa comedy, total look, production value, double up lahat. Biyaya sa amin na nabigyan kami ng second season kaya dodoblehin namin 'yung saya na maaaring i-expect nila at gagawin talaga namin 'yan."

More than the unexpected kidnapping of his mother, Pepe must now face new battles. A powerful evil force threatens the city, secrets from his past will be revealed, relationships will be torn apart, and shocking revelations will be made. Now more than ever, Pepe must dig up his past and revive his alter ego - Alyas Robin Hood.

Alyas Robin Hood also stars Andrea Torres as Venus, the love of Pepe's life and his faithful ally in helping those who are seeking justice; Ruru Madrid as Andres Silang, the geeky adopted son of Emilio (Edu Manzano) who has a secret persona as 'The Marbleman'; and as one of the leading ladies of Dingdong Dantes, Solenn Heussaff as Iris Lizeralde, the rich high-society 'it' girl who will also fall in love with Robin Hood.

Returning for the second season is respected and multi-awarded TV and movie actress Ms. Jaclyn Jose as Judy, Pepe and Caloy's loving mother.

Playing a very special role in the series is seasoned actor Edu Manzano as Emilio Albano, a famous and charismatic real estate agent, but underneath that exterior, is a manipulative man with an insatiable desire for power.

Bringing more action and excitement to Pepe's life are original and new cast members: Gary Estrada as Caloy, Pepe's older brother and father of Lizzy; Paolo Contis as Daniel Acosta, a principled police officer; Jay Manalo as Pablo, the leader of the Kadugo Brotherhood and Emilio's top assassin; Rey "PJ" Abellana as Leandro, Venus' father; Gio Alvarez as Jekjek, Pepe's confidante and best friend; KC Montero as Rigor, a cocky and mean police officer who is also Emilio's ally; Lindsay De Vera as Lizzy De Jesus, Pepe's niece and a supporter of Marbleman; Dave Bornea as Julian Balbuena, a crucial supporter of Marbleman; Rob Moya as Alex Cruz, Daniel's assistant police officer; Antonette Garcia as Frida, Venus' snooty yaya; Luri Nalus as Junjun, the odd but endearing man in Venus' household.

Alyas Robin Hood is under the helm once again of esteemed director Dominic Zapata, with the creative team composed of creative director Roy Iglesias; creative head Dode Cruz; creative consultant Suzette Doctolero; headwriter Aloy Adlawan; writers Glaiza Ramirez and Lobert Villela; and brainstormers Libay Trinidad and Patrick Ilagan.

10 Wildest Moments in "Wildflower" That Got Us "Shookt"

Because of its delightfully campy scenes that engross viewers and trend online, ABS-CBN’s top-rating “Wildflower” easily became one of this year’s most talked about and “meme-able” series on Philippine TV.

Now a household name, Maja Salvador’s character Ivy Aguas is also a hit among netizens – her passive-aggressive character just speaks to everyone’s wild side. While she may look tough with her on-point dresses and sleek bun, her undeniably fierce antics are rooted deep in her desire to fight for her loved ones and defeat the manipulative Ardientes.

But aside from Ivy, the wild ride will not be complete without Emilia Ardiente (Aiko Melendez), Arnaldo Torillo (RK Bagatsing), and Nathalie Alcantara (Roxanne Barcelo), who are all hated by viewers because of their evil ploys but loved because of their notable and borderline funny encounters with Ivy.
As the series continues to bring a daily dose of wild surprises, let us look back at some of the wildest moments in “Wildflower” that surely got everyone ‘shookt.’

1.    The wildest scream

This might be one of the most buzzed about scenes in “Wildflower” as Maja gave a brilliant performance in this episode. But this scene might also have generated the most number of memes online, captioning the scene with various day-to-day struggles such as “realizing that tomorrow’s already Monday” and “seeing your crush with someone else.”

https://media.giphy.com/media/5CdrFeLFedcUE/giphy.gif

2.    The wildest threat

After hiring a group of men to rape and kill Ivy, Emilia thought she had already won. However, since she is Ivy Aguas, she escaped unharmed and still had a lot of strength to remind Emilia who the true queen of Poblacion Ardiente was as she choked her and threatened her life.

https://media.giphy.com/media/hZr5gpMqV4i08/giphy.gif

3.    The wildest fight scene

Ivy is admired with her sense of fashion with her sleek dresses that add to her fierce look. But she was dressed to kill literally after she fought in heels against the men Emilia hired to kill her. Ivy invented fighting in high heels on Philippine television!

4.    The wildest catfight

Filipinos sure love catfights and “Wildflower” has a lot of them, but this one made a mark because no one saw it coming. Emilia offered a cake to Ivy with a wedding cake topper that had a missing head. It triggered Ivy so much that she shoved the cake in Emilia’s face and proved that she couldn’t be toppled down easily.

https://media.giphy.com/media/mSULArHgZ7Hz2/giphy.gif

5.    The wildest faceoff

Viewers were on the edge of their seats when they witnessed the confrontation between the Ardientes and the camp of Camia (Sunshine Cruz) who pointed guns at each other. But netizens really know when to get creative as they turned this nerve-wracking scene into a LOL one as they played it up through memes.

https://media.giphy.com/media/R6K5SrBiXlq8w/giphy.gif

6.    The wildest dream sequence

Ivy usually keeps her chill whenever she is with Emilia as she easily ‘owns’ her with winning clap backs. However, in this scene where Emilia accused her of being a “perfect manipulator,” Ivy did not hold back and grabbed her by the neck. But to viewers’ surprise, everything was just in Ivy’s mind.

https://media.giphy.com/media/M1494HUsZSDdu/giphy.gif

7.    The wildest plan that failed

Emilia just never learns her lesson. She tried to end Ivy by offering her a cocktail mixed with poison. But she failed to outwit her daughter-in-law when she sipped the poisoned drink, putting herself in danger.

https://media.giphy.com/media/Wd4ZXKVeWR8yI/giphy.gif

8.    The wildest confrontation

Ivy has already gone through a lot of pain in her life and no one can just tear her down, even Nathalie, Arnaldo’s ex-girlfriend. Filled with jealousy, she attacked Ivy with a broken glass and tried to stab her. However, Ivy managed to maneuver her and put the broken glass against her neck. But what really made Nathalie scared was when Ivy uttered the words “Huwag ako.” Iconic!

https://media.giphy.com/media/ypb7N77WC1kOY/giphy.gif

9.    The wildest comeback

Camia sure knows how to make a surprise comeback, as she showed up uninvited to the press conference of the Ardientes. In her fierce red long gown, she revealed all the crimes that the Ardientes committed and narrated all the vicious deeds they did to her family. No one can also forget her line “Na-stress ka ba” that got us all stressed out!

https://media.giphy.com/media/ZNSa0s0gDHZoA/giphy.gif

10. The wildest wedding

Everyone was ‘shookt’ when they saw Philippine TV’s first bride in black! It was mind-blowing to see Ivy in a black wedding dress, walking down the aisle with her signature stare and smirk. This sent viewers and netizens into a frenzy, as they shared their excitement about the explosive revelations in the most-awaited wedding in primetime.

More wild scenes are coming viewers’ way in primetime’s wildest series, “Wildflower,” weeks days on ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN HD (SkyCable ch 167). To watch the show’s past episodes, login to iWant TV or on skyondemand.com.ph for Sky subscribers.

ABS-CBN, Ang Probinsyano Cast Pay Tribute to Filipino Soldiers' Heroism in "Saludo sa Sundalong Pilipino"

ABS-CBN celebrated the bravery and heroism of Filipino soldiers last August 3 with a variety show called “Saludo sa Sundalong Pilipino” at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Medical Center Auditorium.

The Kapamilya network, with the help of the AFP, granted the request of the soldiers to see and meet the stars of top primetime series "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano," as they recover from fighting for the country in Marawi and other areas in conflict.

“The Voice” Season 2 finalist Daryl Ong opened the jam-packed show, attended by over 150 soldiers, followed by group performances by the TV program’s “CIDG” boys John Medina, Lester Llansang, Michael Roy Jornales, Benj Manalo, and Marc Solis; child stars Awra, Ligaya, and Pacquito; and loveteams Ejay Falcon and Yam Concepcion and Ron Morales and Louise Delos Reyes.

Comedian Jeffrey Tam also brought laughter to the audience when he taught a soldier a magic trick, while Jhong Hilario got the ladies in the audience screaming with his special dance number.

Yassi Pressman and Coco Martin also got to serenade the troops, while Susan Roces, Jaime Fabregas, Mitch Valdez, Angel Aquino, Sid Lucero, and Mark Lapid also gave their messages of gratitude to the nation’s heroes.

The event, which was also graced by ABS-CBN executives Carlo Katigbak, Cory Vidanes, Laurenti Dyogi, Deo Endrinal, Jun Dungo, and Kane Errol Choa, was the idea of ABS-CBN news reporter Chiara Zambrano, who was assigned to cover the war in Marawi and saw firsthand the sacrifices of our military.

Apart from bringing the cast of the number one show in the country, ABS-CBN also donated a TV set and ABS-CBN TVplus unit to the hospital so patients can continue to enjoy the shows they love while they get better.

ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya also prepared grocery packages and personal care kits for soldiers, which the stars personally handed to the them after the program.

Dungo, who heads ABS-CBN’s Integrated Public Service, expressed ABS-CBN’s support for them as they continue to fight to bring peace to the country.

The whole ABS-CBN is with you in your fight to have a peaceful country and a safe society for today’s generation and the future generations. We salute the bravery, dedication, and heroism of our Filipino soldiers,” he said.

The show’s star, Primetime King Coco Martin, also thanked the network for the chance to serve the country’s heroes.

We thank ABS-CBN for making it possible for us to help and make our love felt to all Filipinos, including our soldiers. We owe our lives to all of you because you are the ones who defend our country. We love you and we hope that through this simple way we were able to make you happy,” he shared.

Maj. Marissa Narag of the AFP Medical Center also thanked the network and the program, which is also celebrating its 100th week on air that day, for spending their time with the soldiers.

Thank you especially to the performers for showing your talent and finesse to help alleviate stress in our minds even just for today,” she shared.

Millennial Love Story "Baka Bukas" Starring Jasmine Curtis-Smith Premieres August 13 on Cinema One

Catch a lovely tale of friendship and romance in the 2016 Cinema One Originals Film Festival Audience Choice awardee "Baka Bukas," starring Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Louise delos Reyes, as it finally airs on cable TV via Cinema One this Sunday (August 13).

Samantha Lee's colorful film centers on the story of Alex (Jasmine) who fell in love with her best friend Jess (Louise). One night changes everything as Jess finds out about Alex's affection towards her, and the two are forced to confront their real feelings for each other.

Aside from being the audience's favorite, the film also got the Best Actress nod for Jasmine and Best Sound for Andrew Milallos at the Cinema One Originals filmfest. Its cast includes Kate Alejandrino, Nelsito Gomez, and "C1 BTS" host Gio Gahol.

After its successful filmfest run that gave the movie significant social media attention, "Bakas Bukas" was released in major cinemas nationwide last March.

Cheekie Albay of Cosmo.ph praised the film's fresh approach stating, "I applaud the film for going where other films have not dared to go: for depicting lesbian relationships as a beautiful, tender bond between two people who deserve to love and be loved openly, despite their unconventional romantic choices."

Filmmaker Samantha also garnered positive comments on the film's quality despite it being her directorial debut.

According to a film review published in Uglywriters.com, "she [Samantha] manages to weave a film that greatly departs the usual romance films we see in local cinema. Her focus and treatment of the lesbian and gay characters in the story makes the film relatable to anyone in the audience. She presents them as real people, just like us."

International news and entertainment company ABS-CBN served today a Statement of Claim issued in Canadian Federal Court against Techspeed Canada Inc., Joe Baddas, Ferdinand Molina and Todd Ross for damages of over $5 million for copyright infringement, trademark infringement and enabling and inducing copyright infringement of ABS-CBN’s copyrighted works.

The lawsuit alleges that Techspeed Canada Inc., Joe Baddas, Ferdinand Molina and Todd Ross sold set-top boxes that enabled buyers to access hundreds of ABS-CBN’s copyrighted movies and TV shows.  On Facebook, Baddas and Ross are seen making a business presentation to new recruits, teaching them how to buy and sell the set-top boxes.

ABS-CBN’s AVP & Head of Global Anti-Piracy, Elisha Lawrence stated: “ABS-CBN alleges that Techspeed Canada Inc., Joe Baddas, Ferdinand Molina and Todd Ross were taking advantage of ABS-CBN’s premium subscription service through its digital platform, TFC.tv, by registering over 78 emails and distributing the usernames and passwords to hundreds of customers.  These customers were participating in this illegal activity by paying the Techspeed group and giving access to their credit card information.

Lawrence added: “Beware of these operations that are not licensed or affiliated in any way with ABS-CBN.  If you have any suspicions that they are not affiliated with ABS-CBN, please call the ABS-CBN office in the US or Canada to verify.  We will continue to protect customers by shutting these operations down.  There is only one genuine ABS-CBN internet subscription service and that is TFC.tv.  To purchase a legitimate subscription call 1-855-832-2632 or go to TFC.tv .”

From the website of Techspeed that clearly says the company is delivering The Filipino Channel shows and programs via the Android TV boxes.

ABS-CBN Canada Country Manager Jun Del Rosario said, “Under ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez, we have done our best to deliver the best Filipino shows on our platforms that give viewers more choice and flexibility.  We urge the Filipino community in Canada to be on the lookout for those who seek to undermine intellectual property rights and make money illegally from copyright infringement.  These are pirates doing criminal activities. They will be caught.  Their customers will end up losing their illegal subscriptions. So, you don’t want to fall victim to that scheme.  Always go to our website TFC.tv to ensure that you are purchasing from the genuine TFC.”

David Lipkus, counsel for ABS-CBN in Canada, said, “ABS-CBN will continue to take all necessary steps to control access to its content.  ABS-CBN invests tremendous resources into its high-quality, original content, and will continue to ensure that Canadians have access to legitimate ABS-CBN content directly from ABS-CBN.”

(Watch the new Dark Tower spots “Battle” at https://youtu.be/so9FGYHtjZA and “Hope” at http://youtu.be/69TY9IDAn3w.)

Demographics the Idris Elba-Matthew McConaughey actioner were typical of a sci-fi action thriller with the crowd being 58% male and 68% over 25.

With good international appeal, The Dark Tower is poised for a successful global rollout. The film opens in Philippine cinemas on August 30, 2017.

There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Knight Warrior, Roland Deschain (Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black (McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman & Jeff Pinkner and Anders Thomas Jensen & Nikolaj Arcel, based on King’s novels. Producers on the film are Akiva Goldsman, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Erica Huggins.

The Dark Tower is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

"The Dark Tower" Epic Novels Make Long-Awaited Big-Screen Release feat. Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." With these words, Stephen King sparked an entire universe that makes its long-awaited screen debut with Columbia Pictures' The Dark Tower, in Philippine cinemas August 30, 2017.

Idris Elba stars as the gunslinger Roland Deschain, sworn to protect the universe, and his perpetual nemesis, Walter O'Dim, the man in black, played by Matthew McConaughey.

In a career spanning 50 years and over 80 books, King has amassed a towering reputation as one of our greatest storytellers. The author of innumerable bestsellers, he has been honored by the President of the United States with the National Medal for the Arts, by the National Book Foundation with the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, and countless awards and prizes. His name is recognized everywhere as a master of blending our everyday world with the supernatural.

And there is one work that is at the center of his entire canon: The Dark Tower, the eight-novel epic telling of an eternal battle between good and evil, with the fate of multiple worlds at stake. "I started The Dark Tower when I was 22 years old, when I had just graduated from college, so it's spanned my entire career," says King. Over time, he says, as the books and stories piled up, "I started to realize that I had all these characters that were referring back to this other world, Mid-World, the world of The Dark Tower. It had become the centerpiece of my fictional universe –characters who showed up in other books would show up in The Dark Tower and vice versa." Even King himself would become a character in later novels. The Dark Tower series of books would become the nexus for most of the King universe and crosses over into many of King's other books.

It's an epic that has inspired millions of readers – not least of which was a young boy in Denmark whose imagination was sparked by the events in Mid-World. Now grown, director Nikolaj Arcel was determined to be the one to bring The Dark Tower to the screen. Growing up with the Dark Tower books, Arcel became so immersed in the stories that the Danish native taught himself English. He recounts, "When I was about 13, there were almost no Stephen King stories translated into Danish. I became infatuated with the few books that I'd read in Danish, even at that age. And so I had to start picking up his English-version novels and I had to teach myself to read adult novel-style English at a very early age. Stephen King taught me English."

For Arcel, the way King weaves together the personal and the larger-than-life elements of the story is why it's connected to so many readers. "It's as small as a 14 year-old boy, who has visions, who thinks he's crazy, and it's as big as a hero fighting a great villain and trying to save the entire universe. It expands from the very intimate to the very epic."

And at the center of the story is the Dark Tower. "The Tower is a thing of beauty, it's a thing of awe, with a powerful presence – it holds the whole world together. I think it's beyond our comprehension," says Arcel, "I think every single fan of the books will have their own idea of what the Dark Tower is."

So who better to ask what it is than the man who created it? "You have to imagine an axle or a spindle, with all of these worlds connected to it," says King. "You know what happens to a car if you cut the axle – it doesn't run anymore. The Tower is the stabilizing force, and the Gunslingers are this ancient group of knights dedicated to the idea of protecting the Tower. But they have been wiped out – there's only one left, Roland. And standing opposite him is an agent of chaos who wants to bring the Tower down," King concludes.

The Dark Tower is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
