ABS-CBN Journo Chiara Zambrano Named TOYM Awardee for 2017

ABS-CBN News broadcast journalist Chiara Zambrano brings honor to the Kapamilya network after being named by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines as one of the The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in the Philippines for 2017.

Chiara, who is currently in the United Kingdom pursuing her studies as a British Chevening scholar, is the TOYM awardee in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication. She was cited for her work including the "Di Ka Pasisiil" documentary on the Marawi siege, which she covered from the war zone last year, and "Spratlys, Mga Isla ng Kalayaan," another ABS-CBN News documentary.

In an interview with TJ Manotoc on ANC's "Early Edition," the journalist revealed her passion for storytelling, which has kept her coming back to doing documentaries, her first love.

"There's really something about documentaries that makes me happy while I'm doing it. Of course, news reporting is a different beast in itself. It has its own sense of fulfillment. But you know it's just a matter of preference, and that's why I decided this year to kind of take a break from all the chaos that we involved ourselves in and to revert to my first love. So, I'm out here now studying to do better documentaries and it's been a great experience so far," she shared.

Before becoming an ABS-CBN News reporter covering the defense beat, Chiara was working behind the scenes as part of the network's iconic investigative program "The Correspondents." She said shifting to news was a big leap for her but she is grateful now that she is able to do both news reporting and documentaries.

"Our bosses are kind enough and they trust me enough to give me the chance to do both. So, most of the time I do news I still give the space to do documentaries like "'Di Ka Pasisiil" about Marawi, the one I did with Jeff Canoy and the Spratlys documentary," she said.

Chiara earned praises last year for her courageous coverage from the battle lines in Marawi. She shared her insights from her experience there. "Reporting about wars isn't so much about the weapons and the war. The clash and the bang. It's really I think one of the most human beats that you can tell, because you are literally talking about lives lost. And lives saved. And lies shattered by war. That's why it works for me."

Chiara follows ABS-CBN broadcast journalist and news anchor Karen Davila as TOYM awardee from ABS-CBN News. Karen won in 2009.

Joining Chiara in the TOYM for 2017 are P/Supt. Byron F. Allatog for Government Service and Law Enforcement, Cirilo Joseph Javier for Arts and Music, Eugenio P. Mende for Veterinary Medicine, Ronaldo C. Reyes for Education, Jason Roy T. Sibug for Community Development, Mark Anthony J. Torres for Government Service Education, and Hidilyn F. Diaz for Sports.

The TOYM award is conferred by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Philippines on individuals who have demonstrated "outstanding leadership and excellence" and contributed to "the cause of humanity" in his or her field.

Nick Jonas’ “Home,” an OST of “Ferdinand” Scores Golden Globes 2018 Nomination

Set in Spain, the delightful movie "Ferdinand" tells the remarkable story of a gentle bull, voiced by John Cena, a gentle giant who prefers flowers to fighting and has no desire to face off against matadors in the bullring. It follows Ferdinand as he embarks on a thrilling, dangerous and fun-filled journey to find love, acceptance and a real home. 'Home' is also the title of the new song from Jonas, about the place where people (and bulls) can relax and be themselves.

From the award-winning Blue Sky Studios, "Ferdinand" was directed by Carlos Saldanha. Based on the classic 1936 children's book of the same name, by author Munro Leaf and illustrator Robert Lawson, the film also stars Saturday Night Live's Kate McKinnon as the voice of Lupe the goat.

We join Ferdinand as he sets off on an adventure looking for somewhere he can call home. He comes across an idyllic farm, befriends the kind farmer and his little girl, Nina, and finds happiness and peace in the flower-filled countryside. But Ferdinand is torn apart from his adoptive family after he's mistaken for a vicious beast and he ends up in a bull training camp, the last place he wants to be! Developing a friendship with a quirky and hilarious 'calming' goat called Lupe (Kate McKinnon) Ferdinand has one goal - to get back home to Nina's farm.

It is a theme that resonates strongly with Nick Jonas who wrote and performed the song 'Home' for the film. He collaborated with acclaimed musician Justin Tranter and songwriter/producer, Nick Monson. According to Carlos Saldanha, 'Home' captures the spirit of Ferdinand. "I wanted a song to reflect the lightness and the power of the film, and I wanted it to feel emotional and fun, just like the movie. Nick wrote brand new lyrics and a brand new melody for us and it was perfect. 'Home' plays in the film at a very empowering moment for Ferdinand, when he finds a place where he's accepted. The song is wonderful and reflects the idea that home is a place where your heart is and where you can be your true self."

Jonas shares that, "I've used the word 'home' in songs before but this was the first time that I really sat and thought about what it meant to me, what I was saying with that word and the significance of that message. For me, it's all about my family. Any time I think about the moments of my life that are really hectic and insane, I think about home. If I look back at the 12 or 13 years of my career so far, it is family that has been the constant in my life. So I wrote this song about my family and the importance of that grounding factor in life. That is what home is all about."

"I think the beauty of Ferdinand as a whole, is that it is highly relatable, no matter what your journey in life is all about, or what your circumstances are. It is about acceptance and it definitely relates to me. I went to regular school in my early life, when I was seven, eight and nine years old. At the same time, I was also doing Broadway shows in New York City. So during my school hours, I was spending time with other kids who didn't share the same interests as me. But when I was working, I'd be around adults who loved musical theatre and telling stories and singing and dancing. That was where I felt more accepted than when I was around kids my own age," concludes Jonas.

"Ferdinand" opens January 8 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Robi Domingo Unveils Japan’s Hidden Christians on ANC’s “Keeping The Faith”

Robi Domingo, one of the country's finest television hosts, is taking a step outside his comfort zone as he anchors the three-part "Keeping the Faith" documentary about Japan's hidden Christians on ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel.

Known for his playful and wacky style as host of various entertainment and reality programs in ABS-CBN, Robi gets to showcase his serious side and versatility in "Keeping the Faith," which airs on the country's leading English all-news cable channel on December 14, 28, and January 11 at 8pm.

In this three-part travelogue, Robi tells the story of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the name of God. He gets to visit to the ancient sites where the original Christians congregated to pray and worship and get to know about the Kakure Kirishitans (Hidden Christians) who went underground to practice their religion in secret.

Robi, who also hosted the "Lakwatsero" travel documentaries on ABS-CBN before, said this project came at the right time in his life. "After everything that happened in my life this year, I really needed to hold on to God. It is in this trip that I became closer to Him," he said.

He added his experience learning about the lives of Christians in their nine-day shoot reminded him of the movie "Eat Pray Love," which is about faith in your God and in oneself.

"I really felt it was impossible to do that documentary in nine days but the team is so good and there's this power which made that all happen. There were instances that a shoot wouldn't push through because of the weather, or snow wouldn't fall in the mountains, but there was divine intervention that happened," he shared.

Overall, the "Pinoy Big Brother" alumnus said his experience doing the documentary taught him that the more you go out of your comfort zone, the more you get to know about yourself. "You get to be immersed in different situations wherein you would not just question yourself, not just your life, but everyone's existence. It's not right to compare your life to another man's life, and your place to another man's place, but it all boils down to that 'Wow' feeling that everything became possible because of this one being who created everything," he explained.

Working with Robi in this documentary is producer Kelvin Paulino, who is also behind the award-winning "Mukha" series of ANC. Kelvin said people should watch out as Robi takes on a role as a true influencer for the youth starting in this documentary.

"We tapped him in this project as a gateway for possible partnerships in the future where we can hopefully engage the younger market in more relevant conversations. There were a few adjustments in the beginning of production but Robi easily found his voice in telling this different story," he said.

On the documentary, Kelvin added it will be interesting for viewers to see the many similarities to our own experience as Filipinos in the evangelization of the Spanish centuries back.

Robi added the documentary will also appeal to travel bugs and millennials because of the scenic places and great food in Japan that they will showcase in the documentary. "Filipinos love to travel, especially the millennials. If they watch the docu they will have a feel that they are travelling with me in that whole experience."

The host shared viewers can also expect some "hugot" comments while he explores the beautiful places in Japan, as well as hole-in-the-wall restaurants with their secret menu which people would like to check out when they visit the country.

Don't miss Keeping the Faith: The Story of Japan's Hidden Christians which will airs on ANC's Documentary Hour, on December 14, December 28, and January 11 at 8 pm on ANC and ANC HD. Watch online via iwantv.com.ph and skyondemand.com.ph. For updates, follow @ANCalerts on Facebook and Twitter.

Luis Manzano Joins Chef Erns Gala in “Galastars Culinary Kitchen”

Luis Manzano considers himself a foodie or someone who goes out of his way to seek new food experiences.

In fact, not too many may be aware of it but the sought-after TV host holds a degree in hotel and restaurant management from De La Salle University, College of St. Benilde. Luis said that his pursuit of the degree exposed him a lot to the kitchen. So, when an opportunity to guest in celebrated chef Ernest "Erns" Gala for GalaStars Culinary's Celebrity Series came along, he did not hesitate and jumped at the chance right away.

GalaStars' Celebrity Series are special webisodes produced by Chef Erns in which popular personalities are seen learning or sharing their favorite recipes online.

GalaStars Culinary provides state of the art equipment with separate lecture and demonstration rooms. They have a modern and high-end kitchen laboratory providing 100% hands-on training. Each workstation can accommodate two students and features a sink, prep table, a high-powered stove, oven, deep fryer and exhaust hood. All instructors are fully certified Chefs and highly respected in the culinary industry.

"This feels like a homecoming for me because I was always inside a kitchen when I was still studying hotel and restaurant management. It has been a while since I get to hold pots, pans, utensils," Luis confessed.

Luis is thrilled to be mentored by Chef Erns, son of renowned culinary legend Sylvia Reynoso-Gala.

"Learning from the best whose culinary skills and that of his family cannot be questioned is an enlightening and one big learning experience for me," he enthused.

Under the guidance of Chef Erns and his kitchen crew, Luis was able to whip up a crown roast and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, which he admits are just two of his favorite food indulgences.

But he also expects to learn more from Chef Erns particularly how to properly prepare one of the family's favorite dishes.

"Salpicao Pasta is a personal favorite of my mom, my brother and my Tito Ralph. I tried cooking it several times but there were a few hits and misses so hopefully through Chef Erns I will finally get to do it properly," Luis mused.

As a foodie who always yearns for new and exciting food adventures, Luis further revealed that the one dish he always looks forward to is the Meal-in-One preparation of her own mother, celebrated acting legend and Star for All Seasons, Vilma Santos.

"It's basically pasta dish made with corned beef, cream of mushroom soup, corn and lots of cheese on top. It's one of those never fail pasta dishes that has the best of all worlds. From the noodles to the saltiness of the corned beef, it has become my go-to dish not just for special occasions like Christmas but also for simple get-together affairs with my barkada," Luis confessed.

"I'm not sure if it's her original recipe or it's something that she read somewhere that she later modified a bit. But it's a hit with me and just about everyone who tried. I haven't met anyone who did not like my mom's Meal-in-One."

Although he has his own personal favorites like steak, beef burrito, pizza, cheesecake and raw mango with bagoong, Luis added that he's always open to trying new dishes and making them himself.

With the help of Chef Erns, Luis will not only concoct palatable dishes for his own personal enjoyment but is also looking forward to possible business opportunities in the food industry.

"This is just the start of a long-term partnership with my friend Chef Erns and I look forward to learning more from him."

GalaStars Culinary is located at 179 Shaw Blvd., Pasig City. More information can be found on www.galastarsculinary.com.
