Beloved Children's Book "Peter Rabbit" Now Showing in PH Theaters

When I was a kid, my dad read me the Peter Rabbit books, so I always had an emotional tie to him – and when I had kids, I read the books to them,” says Will Gluck, the co-writer/director of the famous bunny’s first big screen adventure, Peter Rabbit. “The thing I love most is that Peter is a little mischief-maker. I thought it was a great opportunity to take that little nugget, what Beatrix Potter gave Peter, expand that personality trait and make it our own contemporary story.

In the film, Peter’s war with Old Mr. McGregor, keeper of the vegetable garden, takes a turn when the old man kicks the bucket (a victory Peter is all too happy to claim for himself). But when his great-nephew, Mr. Thomas McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson), inherits the place, Peter realizes that the battle for control of the vegetable garden – and the heart of their next-door neighbor, Bea (Rose Byrne) – has only just begun. To help, Peter is enlisting his family and friends – sisters Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail, cousin Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and other characters author and illustrator Beatrix Potter created in her original tales.

And because Peter Rabbit is so beloved, especially throughout the British Commonwealth, Gluck was able to attract an all-star cast to bring these famous characters to life: James Corden as Peter, Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, and Daisy Ridley as the triplets, Grammy winner Sia as Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and David Wenham as Johnny Town-Mouse.

In addition, the live-action cast did double duty behind the microphone, as Domhnall Gleeson plays the frog Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Rose Byrne voiced Jemima Puddle-Duck, and Sam Neill – on camera as Old Mr. McGregor – gives voice to Tommy Brock, the badger.

For the animation, Gluck and fellow producer Zareh Nalbandian partnered with Nalbandian’s animation and VFX studio Animal Logic, whose previous credits include The LEGO® Movie, Happy Feet, and other films, for a film that would combine animation with live action. “We wanted to use as many of the Beatrix Potter characters as possible to honor what she created,” continues Gluck. “We’re all familiar with the beautiful watercolor paintings – if they were to come to life in the real world, we hope this is what they would look like.”

The inspiration was Potter’s original illustrations. “Will and I went to see the original pictures at the Beatrix Potter archives in London. She literally painted them at the size that they are in the books,” Nalbandian explains. “The challenge was to start with such small works and to maintain the integrity of the characters that are so beloved in the books, while we bring Peter into the 21st Century. It was a huge opportunity for us to do something that's never been seen before.”

One way of maintaining the integrity of the original paintings was to refer to the illustrations whenever possible. “Our goal was to make the rabbits and the other animal characters look like real animals but with clothes and expressions that the books suggest,” says Gluck.

The look of the film was only one part of maintaining the integrity of the characters – just as important was ensuring that Peter behaved as Peter – a character who takes risks and enjoys a good prank, but one whose good heart shines through.

Peter is told not to go into McGregor’s garden because his father was put into a pie for going into the garden. What does he do? He goes into the garden. That’s who Peter is – there's nothing more you can tell someone who’s like that,” Gluck explains. “He has that impishness, but also a bold confidence and a self-delusion that he's always right, when he’s actually often wrong. He’s never in doubt, though, so he keeps charging forward until he realizes he's gone too far.”

In Philippine cinemas February 28, Peter Rabbit is distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Look: "Teen Titans GO! To The Movies" Spoofs "Justice League" in Teaser Poster

Warner Bros. Pictures has just released a “Justice League” parody movie poster for “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies.” Check it out below and watch Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” in Philippine cinemas July 26.

“Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” finds our egocentric, wildly satirical Super Heroes in their first feature film extravaganza - a fresh, gleefully clever, kid-appropriately crass and tongue-in-cheek play on the superhero genre, complete with musical numbers.

It seems to the Teens that all the major superheroes out there are starring in their own movies - everyone but the Teen Titans, that is! But de facto leader Robin is determined to remedy the situation, and be seen as a star instead of a sidekick. If only they could get the hottest Hollywood film director to notice them. With a few madcap ideas and a song in their heart, the Teen Titans head to Tinsel Town, certain to pull off their dream. But when the group is radically misdirected by a seriously Super-Villain and his maniacal plan to take over the Earth, things really go awry. The team finds their friendship and their fighting spirit failing, putting the very fate of the Teen Titans themselves on the line!

Will Arnett (“The LEGO® Batman Movie”) and Kristen Bell (“Frozen”) lend their voices to the first-ever big-screen version of DC Entertainment and Cartoon Network’s animated TV show, which also stars Greg Cipes (TV’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) as Beast Boy, Scott Menville (TV’s “Spider-Man”) as Robin, Khary Payton (“The Walking Dead”) as Cyborg, Tara Strong (the “My Little Pony” franchise) as Raven, and Hynden Walch (TV’s “Adventure Time with Finn & Jake”) as Starfire, reprising their roles from the series.

The film is being directed by Aaron Horvath and Peter Rida Michail, from a screenplay by Michael Jelenic and Horvath, based on characters from DC. Michail, Will Arnett, Jed Weitzman, and Peggy Regan are producing, with Sam Register, Jelenic, and Horvath serving as executive producers. Apart from Arnett and Weitzman, all are “Teen Titans GO!” series contributors.

“Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

This love for Chickenjoy is something that the actor has shared with his family up to now with the teenage Atasha and Andres, who also appeared in several Chickenjoy commercials as young children.

And the twins really do the ‘isa pa! isa pang Chickenjoy’ thing because they really love (the product). They grew up with Chickenjoy, and they know that when it comes to fried chicken, talaga namang best sa sarap ang Chickenjoy,” he added.

Business and Financial Expert Quintin Pastrana Joins ANC

ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) formally welcomed entrepreneur and financial expert Quintin Pastrana as its newest anchor last weekend, when he was introduced as the new co-host of "On The Money" and the resident business expert of "ShopTalk" on the country's premier 24/7 all-English cable news channel.
Quintin joins ANC's trusted and multi-awarded roster of journalists that include international anchors Cathy Yang and Annalisa Burgos and multi-awarded broadcasters Karen Davila, Tony Velasquez, and the returning Tina Monzon-Palma.
A former anchor and producer of Bloomberg TV Philippines, Quintin expressed his excitement to now be a part of ANC.
"I look forward to working with professionals whether they be fellow anchors or the great production and marketing team that make ANC what it is as an institution," he said.
Quintin said his entry to the Philippines' number one local cable news channel was like coming full circle as he was invited by "On The Money" co-anchor Salve Duplito to join the show five years ago, before he ventured into TV work.
He will focus on vital issues for a growing economy, like financial literacy and SME empowerment on ANC.
"I hope to be able to help viewers learn and apply best practices to reach their aspirations -- whether it be how and where to manage investment, rebound from mistakes, and become entrepreneurs and business leaders themselves," he said.
The new resident business expert of "ShopTalk" with Lexi Schulze also added that he also wants to share more stories of entrepreneurs who rose from poverty and are making their dreams come true.
"Knowledge empowers, so I'm constantly on the lookout for these true stories - making the anonymous and undervalued more known and cherished as role models," he said.

"With his addition to our team, we can provide our viewers another perspective of the business landscape, since he has seen how businesses and economies work. Moreover, his advocacy of promoting economic empowerment is aligned with the channel's thrust to be the Filipino's partner in their business and financial journey," Cilette said.

An Enthralling Eacape to Fantasy in Oscar Best Picture Nominee “The Shape of Water,” Showing in PH Theaters on February 21

"The Shape of Water" brings its audience into a mysterious government facility in Baltimore where, in the deepest recesses of the lab, an amphibious creature (played by Doug Jones) is being studied for its unusual abilities. As Agent Strickland (Michael Shannon) demands for it to be killed and autopsied, Dr. Hoffstetler (Michael Stuhlbarg) insists that the creature's secrets can only be revealed with a lighter touch.

But it's the facility's quietest employee who realises the truest connection to the creature. Mute cleaner Elisa (Sally Hawkins) feels a strange affinity with this mysterious visitor from the deep. And as the men in charge prevaricate, she resolves to release the creature from its captors, with the aid of her colleague Zelda (Octavia Spencer) and her next door neighbour Giles (Richard Jenkins).

The movie is directed by award winning director Guillermo Del Toro who is best renowned for his three inspired Spanish-language films that reinvent and upend the very notion of genre:  the multiple Oscar®-winning "Pan's Labyrinth," "Cronos," and "The Devil's Backbone."  Each is a vivid phantasmagoria navigating the moral and physical dangers of a world of corruption, authoritarianism and war.  His supernatural action epics are equally as inventive – "Blade II," the "Hellboy" series, and "Pacific Rim," as well as his gothic romance "Crimson Peak."

THE SHAPE OF WATER follows in that tradition, but this time in socially divided 1960s America on the brink of nuclear war and sweeping cultural changes.  Del Toro weaves in the dizzying landscape of falling in love, as a lonely woman with a traumatic past discovers a love so overpowering it defies suspicion, fear and biology.

Del Toro opens his tale deep underwater. From there the entire film becomes an act of breathless submersion, plunging the audience into a 1960s world full of things we recognize – power, anger, intolerance; as well as loneliness, determination and sudden, electrifying connections – and one extraordinary creature we do not.  An inexplicable biological "asset" of the U.S. government, a mute cleaning woman, her loving best friends, Soviet spies and an audacious theft all flow into a singular romance that surges beyond all boundaries.

Within Del Toro's storytelling, the themes of good and evil, innocence and menace, the historical and the eternal, beauty and monstrosity weave in and out of each other, revealing that no darkness can ever fully defeat the light.  Summarizes Del Toro:  "I like to make movies that are liberating, that say it's okay to be whoever you are, and it seems that at this time, this is very pertinent."  It was also paramount that there be an extraordinary collection of actors.

Exploring the idea of love and its barriers, internal and external, was paramount to Del Toro.  "I wanted to create a beautiful, elegant story about hope and redemption as an antidote to the cynicism of our times.  I wanted this story to take the form of a fairytale in that you have a humble human being who stumbles into something grander and more transcendental than anything else in her life.  And then I thought it would be a great idea to juxtapose that love against something as banal and evil as the hatred between nations, which is the Cold War, and the hatred between people due to race, color, ability and gender."

The fact that the film's two leads don't speak, not conventionally anyway, only heightens the love story by stripping away the miscommunications that often stand between humans. "One thing about love is that it is so incredibly powerful, it doesn't require words," says Del Toro.

"The Shape of Water" opens February 21 in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox.

Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong'o Lead the Phenomenal Cast of Marvel’s “Black Panther”

The filmmakers of Marvel's Black Panther gathered an enviable ensemble of pedigreed cast, led by Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger and Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia.

Producer Kevin Feige comments, "It's great to be able to delve into the world of Wakanda, see Black Panther's lineage and heritage and meet these amazing, rich characters that surround him. To bring them to life, we put together a phenomenal cast. They are among the best that we've ever assembled."

Chadwick Boseman: Prince T'Challa is primed to become the new King of Wakanda. Mourning the loss of his father, T'Challa's claim to the throne is waylaid when villains outside the country pull him out of Wakanda and lead him on an adventure that spans the globe. Pushed to the limit and burdened with the fate of a nation, T'Challa must prevail by any means necessary or risk the lives of millions of Wakandans.

Boseman offers what he finds compelling about his character. "T'Challa is smart. He's a strategist and that has always been something that stood out to me, even in the comic books," the actor says. "He's a world leader and with that comes the responsibility for an entire nation and considering its place in the world. That's something that other Super Heroes don't commonly have, but he must also uphold his legacy. It's an interesting combination."

For Boseman, a committed actor always looking for a substantive role, the opportunity to explore the duality of a conflicted ruler and Super Hero was an irresistible combination in a role. He offers, "There's a lot of real world conflict that you can bring to it. So you don't feel like you're just playing a guy in a suit. You're playing a conflicted, well-rounded character. If you're going to do a Super Hero, you want to do one where you can really act and where you can do something that's going to make you a better artist as well. And I think, culturally speaking, that there are not a lot of opportunities to play a black Super Hero. It's breaking new ground, and to be a part of that is a special thing."

Michael B. Jordan: Erik Killmonger is a new foe to Wakanda with designs on the throne. Equipped with deadly tactical skills and knowledge of Wakanda, he is a formidable enemy for our heroes.

Jordan had already been mentally in the game from the second he heard Marvel Studios was developing the "Black Panther" project. "I was very familiar with Black Panther. As a kid I always wanted to be the Black Panther. He was a character that I always looked up to and admired my whole life, so it's pretty amazing to get to be part of the story for the big screen."

Director Ryan Coogler and the filmmakers knew that Jordan would prove to be a strong foil to Boseman. As a new foe to Wakanda, Killmonger's designs on the throne would set an immediate and inherent tension in motion between the two men which sets the stage for the emotional crux ofBlack Panther.

Lupita Nyong'o: Nakia is a War Dog, a Wakandan spy often imbedded in countries outside of Wakanda to observe and report back. She must decide whether she should be guided by her duty to her nation or her feelings for T'Challa.

Describing Nakia, Nyong'o says, "Nakia is a bit of a rebel but also a loyalist to her country. She is in conflict with some of the ideals of her nation and wants to go her own way, but she is also really eager to serve the country she loves so much. She and T'Challa, now that he is King, are at odds as to what way forward is best for the nation. But they also have some history together, so they have to come to terms with that and figure out how to forge ahead."

Nyong'o states that she could identify with Nakia's free spirit and her independence. "I love a woman who goes her own way and is independent, and I am also really someone who depends on my family and friends and feels a connection to my people, and maybe has a sense of responsibility to 'make them proud.' So I really related to that balancing act within oneself," concludes the actor.

Paolo Ballesteros Will Make You Fall in Laugh Out Love in "Amnesia Love"

This February, VIVA Films invites you to join in the fun as award-winning actor Paolo Ballesteros plays a guy trying to discover his true identity in “AMNESIA LOVE”.

Found unconscious by the beach in a remote island in Zambales, the character of Paolo Ballesteros is taken in by a compassionate couple (Lander Vera-Perez and Maricel Morales).

When he wakes up, he cannot remember his name nor anything else. The couple’s daughter (Yam Concepcion) is skeptical about this guy’s condition, but is left with no choice but to let him stay in their home. Romance starts to brew between the two, but this amnesia patient displays some acts that are not exactly manly, and finds himself distracted by the sight of attractive men. When somebody from his past comes to shed light on who and what he really is, will the answers bring him peace or mayhem?

With a Best Actor award each from Tokyo Film Festival and Metro Manila Film Festival under his belt, Ballesteros said in an interview that he wants to keep making movies that would make people think. “Mapag-iisip yung tao… I want a good film na worth yung pagod.”

This outlook is shared by director Albert Langitan, who has worn different hats in the world of local production. He started out as a scriptwriter, then went on to direct reality shows and teleseryes such as Impostora and Super Ma’am. It is interesting to see how Langitan’s creative eye and Ballesteros’ passion for his craft work together to bring viewers a laugh-out- loud movie that’s hard to forget.

Adding spice to the film is VIVA’s versatile actress, Yam Concepcion who was first launched to stardom via Erik Matti’s adult drama “Rigodon.” “AMNESIA LOVE” is Paolo and Yam’s reunion film. They worked together in the 2016 blockbuster movie, “Bakit Lahat ng Gwapo May Boyfriend?!” with Kapuso star, Dennis Trillo and the Princess of All Media, Anne Curtis.

Joining Paolo, Yam, Lander and Maricel in the cast are Polo Ravales, Vandolph Quizon, Geleen Eugenio, and Sinon Loresca.

“AMNESIA LOVE” is showing in cinemas nationwide, starting February 28, 2018.

"Pilipinas Got Talent" Scores 43.3% Nationwide, Hits New All-Time High TV Rating

ABS-CBN’s world-class talent search “Pilipinas Got Talent” opened the love month with overflowing love from viewers as it hit a new all-time high national TV rating of 43.3% last Sunday (February 4), compared to the 15.3% of its rival, according to Kantar Media.

In this episode of the weekend top-rater that showcases the best Filipino talents from different parts of the country, another deserving group got the coveted Golden Buzzer, which brings a contestant straight to the semifinals.

This lucky group is the Nocturnal Dance Company from Quezon City, whose modern and tribal Filipino dance fusion blew the judges away especially judge Robin Padilla, who used his Golden Buzzer on them.

I have seen many dance performances and I admit I get bored watching them because its too familiar and they are doing the same things. You, however, gave a new flavor into it and thank you because introduced and showcased the Filipino culture to our younger audiences,” Angel commented.

It’s appealing to the eyes. Your moves were synchronized. The performance proves that you don’t need to do death-defying stunts to entertain us,” Vice voiced.

Robin, on the other hand, thought that the act was an answered prayer for him.

This is the first time I saw Filipinos love and embrace their own culture. And with that…” Robin said before pressing the buzzer.

There are two more Golden Buzzers left this season - one from Vice and one from hosts Billy Crawford and Toni Gonzaga.

Which act will advance to the semi-finals next?

Best Actress Nominee Sally Hawkins in a Love Affair Beyond Words in "The Shape of Water"

Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro, known for his hit feature films “Hellboy” and “Pacific Rim” brings a new world far beyond one’s imagination in “The Shape of Water”, composed of a stellar cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones and Michael Stuhlbarg.

“The Shape of Water” is a fairy tale set in the Cold War era that sees the journey of Elisa (Hawkins), a mute janitress in a highly-secured government facility who connected and fell in love with a marine creature (Jones).  From Elisa’s loneliness and powerlessness, she soon becomes a heroine who takes huge risks, made all the more extraordinary because the role is almost without words.  Rendered mute by a childhood trauma, Elisa communicates in American Sign Language (ASL), but she is able to express herself effusively when she encounters the strange aquatic creature being warehoused in the government lab where she works as a cleaning lady.  Elisa sees none of the creature’s oddities when she sets eyes on the iridescent beauty in chains – to her, he is sheer loneliness and that makes him instantly worthy of her attention.

Elisa’s rich and brave interior world comes to life via a luminous performance from Academy Award® nominee Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, Blue Jasmine) that propels the story forward at every turn.  Hawkins knew instantly there has never been and will never be a role quite like Elisa.  “It’s so rare that you get a role that asks you to put it all out there.  Where it’s about unadulterated expression and words are not needed, and you have the freedom to express so much through your eyes, breath and body. That is Elisa.

Hawkins was Del Toro’s muse as he was writing. “Elisa is not someone who had a horrible existence until the creature showed up.  She was not leading a glamorous existence by any means but she was content.  I needed someone who evokes that kind of happiness, whose face is able to express every hue without a word. Sally has that kind of unique energy, so that is why I wrote it for her.  Sally is the most genuine, unaffected person and I don’t think she is capable of doing anything that isn’t emotionally real.”

The first read of the script beckoned to Hawkins so powerfully it sparked a few anxieties.  “It was so moving.  It was interestingly familiar to me, yet it was like nothing I’ve encountered.  I felt like Elisa was a deep part of me, or like I knew her in another life.  I also felt it was the ultimate romantic fairy tale.  At first I was convinced that Guillermo had the wrong person for the role,” she confesses.  “It’s the kind of romantic lead I really didn’t ever think I would play, so it’s been a dream gift to me.”

For Hawkins there was no other means to doing so except to dive in to the deep end with full abandon, navigating Elisa’s blooming courage as well as a florid fantasy life that becomes unexpectedly real – with the most unexpected of partners.  Working with Del Toro helped her to let go completely and submerge herself.  “Being Elisa was an incredibly internal kind of journey, but Guillermo is so inclusive and so values your creativity as well, and that he really helped,” Hawkins explains.  “He has such a powerful vision that whatever your fears are, he just takes them away and says ‘let me worry about that.’”

Hawkins had a steep learning curve to begin with.  She began taking ASL classes and dance lessons well before rehearsals began.  She also began feeling out the way Elisa moves, her lightness on the earth.  “To me, it seemed she is always floating, always in a kind of dance, so I wanted to get at that sort of otherworldly feeling in her physical being,” she describes.

“The Shape of Water” opens in cinemas nationwide on February 21 from 20th Century Fox.
