Myx TV GM Miguel Santos tapped to moderate The Television Academy’s “The State of Asian American Representation in Hollywood”

As Asian Pacific American Heritage Month kicks off this May, Myx TV, the leading English-language Asian American entertainment network, represents strongly with Myx TV General Manager and Executive Producer Miguel Santos set to moderate a huge talk event organized by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences or The Television Academy – the organization that brings the Emmys to the world.

Come May 16, 2018 at 7pm at the Governors Room of the Saban Media Center at the Television Academy in North Hollywood, California, Santos will moderate “The State of Asian American Representation in Hollywood”.

The featured panelists are Howard Meltzer, CSA, Showrunner/Writer Veena Sud, and Director/Showrunner Kulap Vilaysack. The talk is only open to Television Academy members.

In recent years, people have seen the first primetime Emmy wins for writers and performers of Asian descent with Riz Ahmed, Aziz Ansari, Alan Yang, and Archie Panjabi, and there are more performers of Asian descent on television than ever before. However, while there are increased on-camera opportunities for AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) performers, their storylines remain limited. There is a large representation gap behind the camera as well.

As the entire U.S. celebrates Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, panelists from across television platforms and professions will discuss the state of Asian American voices in the industry. The conversation will be centered on performers, storytellers, casting and where we go from here for better representation in television.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences was founded in 1946 - just one month after network television was born. It is a nonprofit organization devoted to the advancement of telecommunication arts and sciences and to fostering creative leadership in the telecommunication industry.

The Television Academy, the only major organization devoted to the television and broadband screen entertainment industry, is made up of over 24,000 members, representing 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors and various other artisans, technicians and executives.

The Television Academy recognizes excellence through its many annual award programs:

The Primetime Emmy Awards, telecast prior to the fall television premiere season, is the flagship event for which the Television Academy is best known.

ABS-CBN's “Precious Hearts Romances Presents Araw Gabi” Beats GMA-7's "Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka"

Viewers nationwide warmly welcomed the start of ABS-CBN’s newest drama “Precious Hearts Romances presents Araw Gabi” on afternoon television and hit a national TV rating of 15.7% versus its rival program’s 13.5%, based on data from Kantar Media.

Aside from getting strong viewership, Precious Hearts Romances series’ comeback and JM De Guzman’s return to television opposite newest leading lady Barbie Imperial also conquered Twitter, with the show’s official hashtag #ArawGabiPagsibol trending nationwide.

JM’s acting is still impressive. He can pull of the troubled mysterious guy without being creepy. He does his role so well plus he is also handsome,” said @cessyloveJM.

Twitter user @garciabaeretto also commended JM’s performance and tweeted, “Slow clap for JM de Guzman. Nothing changed. As a matter of fact his acting improved. We are so proud of you @1migueldeguzman.

Meanwhile, @gianIndon shared “I think I'm in love with @1migueldeguzman and @barbieeimperial after watching #ArawGabiPagsibol. I never thought they will have a good chemistry just by watching the first episode.”

Not into teleseryes but I'm pretty sure #ArawGabi is gonna be an exception! The pilot episode was so ‘nakakakilig,’” @shineninay said.

The teleserye’s pilot telecast gave a peek to the lives of cheerful advertising manager, Mich (Barbie Imperial), and the very strict boss, Adrian (JM de Guzman). The two started on the wrong foot and continued when Adrian disapproved Mich’s proposal for his resort.

However, Mich did not lose hope and decided to improve her presentation by going to El Paraiso.

What awaits Michelle in El Paraiso? What will she discover about Adrian?

Don’t miss “Precious Hearts Romances presents Araw Gabi” weekdays after “Asintado” in ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Gold.

JoshLia Stands Up Against Online Bashing in New OPPO F7 TVC

If there's anyone who has had more than their fair share of online hate, it would be popular celebrities who came of age in the social media generation, just like Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia. "Bashers," or individuals who seem to gain pleasure in leaving unsavory commentaries on social media, often flock to high-profile accounts like those of Barretto, Garcia, and other showbiz personalities.

Barretto, who belongs to an oft-controversial celebrity clan, is used to seeing nasty messages and comments disparaging her looks, talents, and personality online. She has had countless bashers tell her that she might have had work done on her face, that there is no talent behind her pretty face, and that she's another vain artista. Barretto confronts these negative statements in her new commercial for the OPPO F7, where she is joined by Garcia to convey an uplifting message.

"This project with OPPO is so timely," she said. "Standing up against online bashing is something that Joshua and I feel is relevant because the audience will be able to relate to it. I think a lot of them are curious about how celebrities deal with negativity directed at us online. I'm so glad that OPPO has allowed us to share this story with more people."

"Nangyayari talaga 'to sa amin," agreed Garcia. "And the message of the commercial is really uplifting because people might say a lot of bad things about you online, but you shouldn't feel bad about yourself because the people who know you in real life will know the real deal, the real story, and will always value you for being who you really are."

Capture the Real You

The teen love team—who have made fans swoon over their romantic films Vince & Kath & James, Love You to the Stars and Back, and Unexpectedly Yours—are part of OPPO Philippines' impressive roster of endorsers. Barretto and Garcia are the stars of the mobile leader's latest campaign which highlights its upcoming flagship OPPO F7.

"For me, the F7 ang pinaka-magandang model ng OPPO to date," Garcia shared. "All the features we want in a smartphone, they brought together in one unit."

The features that Barretto and Garcia love the most in the OPPO F7 are the best-in-class 25MP front camera for the most flattering and natural selfies, the advanced AI Beauty 2.0 Technology, and the Super Full Screen for a truly immersive mobile experience.

Apart from the impressive features of this new flagship smartphone, OPPO got Julia and Joshua on board with the line "Capture the Real you"—a message that the two young celebrities related to.

Barretto said: "This is the first time that I had a project that tackled this reality, and it's one that empowered us to voice out how we really feel about online bashing."

OPPO Public Relations Maanger, Eason de Guzman is also happy to have the love team as the faces of its newest campaign. "Julia and Joshua are among the hottest stars in the country, but that popularity comes with a price. We're glad to have them in the OPPO family and to have them speak their mind against online bashing and promote our philosophy of capturing the real you to a wider audience."

'They should stop'

To their credit, the love team does not reciprocate the hate they receive from bashers.

"I feel like the bashers should stop. Their lives will be more positive if they follow the golden rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Focus on yourself, improve, and figure out how you can be a better person. For those suffering from online bashing, it's a waste of energy to dwell on the negativity. Shrug it off. You know who you are and don't let other people tell you otherwise," Barretto advised.

"We can't really stop the bashers from doing what they want," Garcia thoughtfully replied to his on-screen partner's statement. "But I suggest that bashers think of their victims. You should get to know them, what they go through, before typing something mean. Madali mamintasthan finding good things to say to a person. For the online bashing victims, the people who matter most will always love you for who you really are. Sabi nga ng OPPO, capture the real you."

The new OPPO F7 is priced at PhP 17,990.00 and will be available for pre-order in all OPPO stores and authorized reseller starting April 12 to April 20, 2018. Capture the real you with OPPO and let the world know that you stand with Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia against online bashing by liking OPPO Philippines' official Facebook page and following @OPPOPhilippines on Twitter and Instagram. Customers are also encouraged to check out the OPPO Philippines official Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OPPOPH/  for special promos and upcoming roadshow schedules about the new OPPO F7.

ABS-CBN Wins Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals at 2018 New York Festivals

ABS-CBN DocuCentral's documentary "'Di Ka Pasisiil" on the Marawi siege won a Gold World Medal at the 2018 New York Festivals World's Best TV & Films (NYF), leading the Kapamilya winners in the prestigious competition.

Reporters Jeff Canoy and Chiara Zambrano received the award in a ceremony held in Las Vegas, USA yesterday (April 10). The documentary won the top award in the category of Coverage of a Continuing News Story.

The country's leading media and entertainment company also won a Silver World Medal in the Cinematography category for the documentary "Local Legends: Bandurria" of ANC, and a Bronze World Medal in the Station/Image Promotion category for ABS-CBN Creative Communications Management's "To Love and To Serve" campaign.

In his Twitter post, Jeff dedicated their award to their fellow reporters and soldiers and civilians in Marawi, where he and Chiara broke news from the warzone.

"Still surreal. This Gold World Medal from the New York Festivals is for our troops who fought the fight, for the people of Marawi who continue to show us courage & for our fellow Filipino journalists who continue to tell our stories like only we can," Jeff stated.

Chiara also vowed to continue following their stories as they heal from the physical, mental, and emotional wounds brought to them by the war.

"This award we share with all of these heroes, and this is also our commitment to them that we will stick by them and continue to tell their stories as they rebuild their lives," she said in her acceptance speech.

"Di Ka Pasisiil" first aired at 3:30pm on August 13, 2017, three months after the siege of Marawi began. The documentary told stories about how the war changed the landscape in the Islamic state and how the government's brave soldiers defended Marawi from the terror group.

A "Mukha" episode of the same title, which featured personal accounts of Jeff and Chiara as they covered the war, also made it as finalist in the NY Festivals.

ANC's "Local Legends: Bandurria," meanwhile, focused on the life and craft of a master guitar-maker in Pampanga, while "To Love and To Serve" poetically expressed the love of a "Kapamilya," and how ABS-CBN is committed to serve Filipinos through its various services and products.

These NY Festival awards add to the growing number of recognitions received by ABS-CBN News in 2018 for its programs, campaigns, anchors, and journalists.

Recently, ABS-CBN won Best TV Station at the Eastern Visayas State University-Ormoc City Campus (EVSU-OCC) Student's Choice Mass Media awards for the fourth time. Of the 17 awards given, the Kapamilya network also took home eleven trophies including Best News Program for "TV Patrol," Best Morning Show for "Umagang Kay Ganda," and Most Influential Public Service host for "Failon Ngayon" host Ted Failon.

Acclaimed Thriller “A Quiet Place” Grosses P41.7

Paramount Pictures' A Quiet Place posted a five-day opening weekend gross of P41.7 million in the Philppines, becoming the studio's second most successful launch for a horror-thriller, after 2013's World War Z.

Arriving with some of the year's most positive reviews, the Emily Blunt-starrer directed by her real-life husband, John Krasinski, has riveted local film critics with some already calling it "the year's best horror-thriller."

American reviewers have also likened it's success to that of the Oscar-winning thriller Get Out, and there is already talks of possible Academy Awards nominations next year.

In the U.S., A Quiet Place earned an additional $32.9 million in its second week of release, bringing its cumulative domestic gross to an impressive $100 million.

"The speed with which 'A Quiet Place' has raced to the $100 million mark is a testament to the film's ongoing appeal and a result of terrific word of mouth," said Paul Dergarabedian, a film analyst at comScore.

In the modern horror thriller A Quiet Place, a family of four must navigate their lives in silence after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. If they hear you, they hunt you.

Paramount Pictures in association with Michael Bay presents a Platinum Dunes Production of A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski and starring Emily Blunt, Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. The screenplay is by Bryan Woods & Scott Beck and John Krasinski from a story by Bryan Woods & Scott Beck. Newest Jolly Spaghetti Endorsers Mommy Regine and Son Nate Share Their Most Sweet-Sarap Moments

With an illustrious entertainment career spanning three decades, Regine Velasquez-Alcasid has done almost everything, including chart-topping singles and albums, blockbuster movies, high-rated TV shows, and sold-out concerts. But for the Asia’s Songbird - one of the very few who’s successfully juggled being a singer, actress, record producer, and TV host - there’s one role she loves best: being a mom to her six-year-old son Nate.

Regine and Nate - who love to spend time just talking to one another about anything and everything under the sun - are the newest members of the Jollibee family and the stars of the latest heartwarming Jolly Spaghetti TV ad.

In the commercial, Regine revisits a familiar scene - a full concert auditorium with thousands of adoring fans - with a sweet-sarap surprise backstage for Nate. The ad goes on to show us special everyday moments between mother and son, with Regine narrating how being a mom has shed new light on day-to-day situations.

This is not the first time Regine and Nate worked on an endorsement together, but she believes that this one with Jollibee is the most special. “The storyboard is so touching and very personal. It shows my different roles as Regine, but it also shows that my greatest one is being a mom, which is the most difficult yet most fulfilling role I have to play,” Regine shared.

Upon first review of the storyboard, Regine said: “Umiyak talaga ako. I said, “pinag-isipan talaga nila.” I’ve never done anything like this, a commercial that celebrates my being a career woman and a mom.

Asia’s Songbird also shared that this Jollibee ad is inspired by her real life and her thoughts about being a mom. “In the ad, there’s a line where I say “sa lahat ng kinantahan ko, ikaw lang ‘ang nakatulog.” That’s true talaga! He really sleeps whenever I sing to him. It’s like they captured our real lives!” she said.

Another scene in the commercial that made Regine emotional is when she sings the lines “Pangako magmula ngayon, tayong dalawa ang magkasama,” which is lifted from one of her platinum hits “Pangako.” This song holds special meaning to the songstress as it was composed by her husband Ogie Alcasid.

Mommy Regine and Son Nate Sweet-Sarap Bonding Moments

Since she gave birth to Nate in 2011, Regine has slowed down her professional life to spend more time with her son. The first seven years are the most crucial to a child’s development, as studies show, and the Songbird is determined to make the most of it.

One of their favorite bonding activities is to talk to each other before bed. “He always has a lot of kwento for me at night,” Regine said. “He would always say, “Mommy, last kwento,” but this last story would go on for 20 minutes! But honestly, that’s the highlight of my day. He really loves talking.”

We also play with toys but they’re not really toys,” Nate shared. “It’s called amenities!

He loves hotel supplies like toothbrushes,” Regine explains. “So one time when I was traveling, I brought everything back home to him. He was so happy, akala mo binigyan ko ng special gift. To him, it was really special because he knows I remembered him. I then realized, you can buy your child all the toys you can think of, but what they really want is more time with you.”

Regine’s realization is not lost on Nate, who - despite his parents’ celebrity status - prefers simple bonding activities like going on picnics and playing with Regine and Ogie. To make these bonding moments even sweeter and more fun, there’s always the sweet-sarap Jolly Spaghetti to bring more flavor to the Alcasid family’s special time together.

When it’s time for merienda, he would say “I want one Jolly Spaghetti, two Chickenjoy legs, and two fries.” When I’m not at home, he would ask to order Jollibee and pay for it with his own money! Hindi niya ako hihintayin!” Regine candidly shared.

The Jolly Spaghetti is so yummy!” the six-year-old exclaimed. “It’s sweet and cheesy and I can eat a lot of it!

It’s no wonder why Nate - and other Pinoy kids - love Jolly Spaghetti. The al dente noodles are topped with Jollibee’s unique sweet-sarap sauce, meaty hotdog slices, and a generous sprinkling of grated cheese.

The Jolly Spaghetti’s unique sweet-sarap, flavors have always had a distinctive place in the hearts of Filipino kids and kids-at-heart, because moments spent with loved ones over a plate of Jolly Spaghetti are made sweeter, more fun, and more special,” said Cathleen Capati, Jollibee Marketing Director. “Regine and Nate’s story is not only heartwarming but also relatable to millions of Filipinos.”

Like Regine and Nate, make your family bonding moments more special with the sweet-sarap na walang katulad Jolly Spaghetti. The Jolly Spaghetti Solo retails for only P50.00* and the Jolly Spaghetti Family Pan (good for four to five persons) for P199.00*. Both are available in all Jollibee stores nationwide for dine-in, take-out, delivery, and drive-thru.

"Patay Na Si Hesus" (Jesus Is Dead) RIP. OTW. LOL. Showing in U.S. Theaters Starting April 6

“Patay Na Si Hesus” (Jesus is Dead) may not exactly appear like it’s the most apropos movie for the current Easter season.

Because it’s not. And it’s not about that Jesus either.

So, y’all can chill when it comes to U.S. theaters starting tomorrow, April 6, in 11 cities in California, Nevada, Illinois and New Jersey.

A darling of film festivals, “Patay Na Si Hesus” won the Audience Choice and Gender Sensitivity Awards when it debuted late 2016 at the QCinema International Film Festival and the Jury’s Choice Award at the 2017 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (Festival of Filipino Films) of the Film Development Council of the Philippines. It won the Star Awards Indie Movie Screenwriters of the Year for Moira Lang (formerly Raymond Lee) and Fatrick Tabada and FAP Awards for Best Supporting Actress for Chai Fonacier. It has played at the 1st Cinematografo International Film Festival in San Francisco, Seattle Twist Festival, Toronto Reel Asian Festival and Cambodia International Film Festival.

One thing in common about theaters that screened this movie, which by the way, is in a Filipino dialect called Cebuano (not Tagalog)?  They were packed.  And theatergoers almost died… laughing.

No worries for those who will watch starting tomorrow: this original crazy rib-tickler will have English subtitles.

The film stars Jaclyn Jose, the first Filipina to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for the dark and gritty, “Ma’ Rosa” in 2016.  She plays Maria Fatima or Iyay for short. Joining her are Chai Fonacier as Jude, Melde Montanez as Jay, Vincent Viado as Hubert, among others.

Oh, yes, there is this cuddly canine named Judas. But don’t ask who played Jesus.

So, what’s going on in this film? Iyay got her three adult kids together on a long drive from Cebu to Dumaguete (think about 5 hours of driving).  The reason? To attend the funeral of Iyay’s long-estranged husband and father of her kids named Hesus.  The eldest child, Hubert, has Down’s syndrome.  The middle child, Judith Marie is a lesbian/trans man named Jude.  The youngest child, Jay, is a jobless bum.  With Judas the dog and their crazy aunt, Lucy, they all squeezed into their trusty minivan for one life-changing road trip guaranteed to make the viewers cackle, giggle and guffaw from all the hilarious banter and absurdity that go on.  But viewers might need a tissue or two for tears because this is one family story that will also touch hearts.

ReelAdvice.net wrote:

Quirky, offensive and hilarious are words that easily describe "Patay na si Hesus". The film mixes comedy and drama perfectly into a volatile, unique and in-your-face experience. This is one road movie you wouldn't want to pass up.”

Kudos to director Victor Villanueva, the cast and crew.
