Ryan Gosling Plays “First Man” on the Moon, Neil Armstrong

Two-time Oscar-nominee Ryan Gosling stars as real-life astronaut Neil Armstrong in Universal Pictures' First Man, the riveting story behind the first manned mission to the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the decade leading to the historic Apollo 11 flight.

Time and again, Gosling has proven his commitment to his art—as seen in his preparation for his Oscar®-nominated role in La La Land, when he learned to play the piano in just three months.  Likewise, during his preparation for his role in The Notebook, Gosling spent two months soaking up the culture of Charleston, South Carolina, and, just like his character, actually learned to build furniture.

In First Man, Gosling proves his dedication in time spent studying to portray the global icon.  For the production team, director and star are inextricably linked in their shared passion for perfection.  "Ryan has a commitment to doing excellent work," sums producer Marty Bowen.  "He is keenly aware of the legacy he's leaving behind and often, likeminded people find one another in material that they can connect with.  It makes sense that Ryan and director Damien Chazelle want to work together.  When you watch La La Land, the character that Ryan plays is someone who's obsessive about his craft…because Ryan's obsessive about his craft."

Gosling brings a special something to his roles, commends Bowen.  "It's his humanity.  It's his understanding of sentiment…and not sentimentality.  So often people want to overwhelm you with their emotion.  It's the truly great craftsmen who know how to dispense it in a way that keeps you leaning in."

Gosling admits that becoming Neil Armstrong would have been impossible without the help of numerous collaborators.  "I was very privileged to meet with Janet Armstrong before she passed away.  I was also very fortunate to talk with Neil's two sons, Rick and Mark, and spend time with Neil's sister, June, at their farm in Wapakoneta, Ohio, where Neil was born.  The Armstrong Air & Space Museum, and both NASA's Cape Canaveral and Houston facilities, opened their doors to me.  There were also experts on set daily to advise on the specifics of every mission we were trying to replicate.  I also had almost constant access to author James Hansen and his book First Man; a work of more than 700 pages of meticulous research.  I've never had so much help researching a role or been involved with so many people who were so enthusiastic and happy to provide it."

Gosling's fascination for Armstrong and the men who were his cohorts permeated the production.  "My first instinct in preparing for this role was to learn how to fly.  Neil was flying before he could drive; it seemed an integral part of who he was, so I thought I should start there.  At a certain point in my training, I was asked to force the aircraft into a self-imposed 'stall,' and I had a moment of clarity.  This was a terrible idea.  I understood in that moment why Neil was destined to be one of the world's greatest pilots and why I was not.  Like many other astronauts, Neil began as a test pilot.  It takes a certain kind of person to knowingly get into an aircraft that has never been flown and take it to its breaking point, for the sole purpose of finding its flaws so that we might move our understanding of aeronautics forward."

One of Gosling's biggest fans on set was the actress who plays his on-screen wife.  "Ryan is warmth personified," sums Claire Foy, who portrays Janet Armstrong.  "He doesn't have to work very hard at that, I don't think.  He's incredibly likable as a person, and that's the thing with Neil.  I don't think he was antisocial or rude; he wasn't conventional.  He didn't do what everybody does, which is try and make everyone else feel great about themselves…and if there's an awkward silence, try and fill it.  Innately, Ryan is kind-hearted and generous and warm and genuine…that's just naturally what he brings to the table."

Big Reveal: Maine Mendoza is Making the Big Switch

Phenomenal Star Maine Mendoza is a hot topic once again. Recently, a new endorsement shoot of hers leaked online and her hawk-eyed legions of fans were quick to grab the receipts. She was spotted at what appears to be the pictorial shoot for Maxi-Peel and word has it, she's the new endorser of their latest product called Maxi-Peel ZERO.

Here's what we know: Word has it that she's looking for something more  than just a basic cleanser,  and she feels that her old brand simply doesn't make the cut anymore given her very hectic lifestyle. That's why she's making the switch. We've seen Maine endorse all sorts of products but over the years, she has become much more selective in terms of products and  brands she works with, choosing only the ones that she truly believes in. This is why she's not just the top celebrity endorser in this country, she is also the most compelling. Just very recently, Maine was one of the winners at the 8th EdukCircleAwards bagging two awards, the Most Influential Female Endorser and the Best Female Variety Show Host.

Could this be the reason why Maine has been posting more selfies recently? Her supporters have been pointing out that her skin is to-die-for. Not a blemish in sight! And they are quick to add that her glowing skin is the perfect complement to her endearing personality.

Reese Dianson, a Maine loyalist, proudly exclaims: "Love namin si Maine because with her, what you see is what you get. Hindi mo siya mapipilit sa isang bagay na ayaw niya. Kaya kung magpapalit nga siya ng brand, yun talaga ang kanyangpaniniwala. So kami, as true believers, lilipat din kami!" For Becca Lizada who has followed Maine from the first time she made her debut at Eat Bulaga: "Si Maine, totoong tao yan. Walang halong kaplastikan. Bawat galaw at salita niya, yun siyasa real life! Kaya sa endorsements niya, choosy si Maine dahilpangalan niya ang nakataya!".

True or not, Maine's fans are buzzing with excitement and if it is, we're betting that just like any product she endorses, Maxi-Peel ZERO will soon be flying off the shelves, too.

Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg Reunite in Action-packed Movie "MILE 22," Now Showing in Theaters Nationwide

VIVA International Pictures and MVP Entertainment proudly present “Mile 22”, the fourth film collaboration between director Peter Berg and two-time Academy award nominee Mark Wahlberg after their blockbuster movies “Patriots Day”, “Deepwater Horizon” and the Oscar-nominated “Lone Survivor”.

“Mile 22” follows an elite paramilitary team called the “Ground Branch” who must travel 22 miles in 38 minutes to transport a foreign intelligence asset from an American Embassy in Southeast Asia to an airfield where he will be extracted and brought to the United States. This asset possesses highly classified information which could prevent terrorists from attacking and making at least six major cities uninhabitable.

As the Ground Branch risks life and limb in Southeast Asia, with the city’s military, police, and even street gangs closing in on them to reclaim the asset, its counterpart called “Overwatch” is tasked to aid them from thousands of miles away. Overwatch has mad hacking skills, monitoring the Ground Branch agents involved in the operation and communicating with them in real time to help keep them alive, in motion and on mission, as the action unfolds and the city quickly becomes a battleground.

Mark Wahlberg portrays James “Jimmy” Silva, the brilliant senior officer and leader of this small but lethal group. His brain is like a shark, always moving, always working, and seemingly incapable of slowing down; he is incapable of separating himself from his work. He feels a tremendous amount of responsibility to protect his country and his team, who know him to be direct, gruff, unpredictable, sarcastic, and all business.

When asked what drives Jimmy Silva, Wahlberg answers, “His upbringing, his youth…He has no family, no ties to anybody. (For him) the mission comes first, last, and in between. So, it’s a very unique kind of skill set that these guys have that are requirements for the job.”

Ronda Rousey (Furious 7, The Expendables 3) plays Samantha “Sam” Snow, a member of Silva’s group. This former UFC women’s bantamweight champion fighter excited shares, “They put the script in my lap and it was a completely fresh and different role for me, and I absolutely loved it. My role was not so dependent on being physical and fighting; it was like completely the opposite.” In this film, Rousey’s character exhibits extreme loyalty to her friends.”

Playing the foreign intelligence asset named Li Noor is Indonesian actor and martial arts master Iko Uwais, best known for his starring roles in the acclaimed action film series The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2. “Mile 22” marks his American film debut.

According to Peter Berg, “Iko is a big reason for me wanting to do this movie; he’s probably what started it.” The director reveals that he was mesmerized by Iko after watching The Raid. Iko has been referred to as “the next Bruce Lee”, and Berg began formulating plans for an action film to bring Uwais to a worldwide audience. That film became Mile 22.

Although “Mile 22” is a work of fiction, it’s standard practice for Berg to engage a group of consultants with real world experience – from Navy SEALs and Army Rangers, to CIA officers and computer experts – to assist the cast and filmmakers in creating accurate character depictions in terms of both actions and dialogue in any given situation. So viewers can expect a realistic and thrilling movie.

This intense and explosive film opens in cinemas on October 10.

All Hell Breaks Loose When “Johnny English Strikes Again”

In Universal Pictures' new action-comedy Johnny English Strikes Againwhat ensues is a battle of wit versus the witless, mastermind versus Mr Mindless, high tech versus analogue as Johnny English lurches from one mishap to the next.

Showing in Philippine cinemas October 10, the film stars Rowan Atkinson (the Johnny English films), Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) and Emma Thompson (Beauty and the Beast).

Five days before the British Prime Minister is to host her first G12 summit, MI7's security is breached and every agent in the field identified and exposed.   The only hope of finding the perpetrator is to bring an agent out of retirement, but with most of them either dead or close to it, the head of MI7 is left with only one choice, and his name is English… Johnny English.

As the film's story process unfolded, the filmmakers hit on a theme: analog versus digital. From this, the plot and villain for Johnny English Strikes Again began to take shape.

A man who perhaps was more in his prime in the pre-digital days, Johnny English remains the perfect symbol for the analog world. "The more the world becomes digitized, the more extraordinary analog is," says screenwriter William Davies. "There's something so physical and appealing about it. And of course analog has an advantage over the digital high tech of 21st Century. Analog is invisible to the digital world."

Representing the hi-tech digital world is American billionaire Jason Volta, the head of a tech company who meets with the Prime Minister to convince her to hand Britain's digital security matters over to his company. While the PM also pressures EU leaders to do the same, little does she realize that Volta is the one behind the security breach and the accompanying ransom demand. While Johnny English stumbles upon his scheme, when nobody believes him, he must set out to find proof.

With Johnny brought back to MI7, the plot and characters began to be fleshed out for a story that takes Johnny English from London to the French Riviera and finally Scotland. As Atkinson explains, the script development comes down to two factors: "Is this an appropriate joke for Johnny English and is it a good enough joke?" His task is to ensure the tone of the ideas remain consistent with the Johnny English character – "this spy who's not as good as he thinks he is".

Davies praises Atkinson for his innate comic sensibilities and the way he understands the Johnny English character. "The thing about Rowan is he knows exactly what's true to the character and the way the character is going to be in a certain situation. Certain things are too big or too wacky.  It has to feel real and it has to feel true, otherwise it doesn't work. The world around Johnny has to feel as real as possible to be funny. Rowan is very careful about how that stuff is calibrated."

Johnny English Strikes Again is distributed in the Philippines by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.  Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/uipmoviesph/; Twitter at https://twitter.com/uipmoviesph and Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/uipmoviesph/

5 Notable Lessons from “FPJ Ang Probinsyano” Most Memorable Scenes

"FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" has just turned three. While its run has given us iconic and meme-worthy moments, the show remains loved by millions because of how its stories and characters reflect the lives of ordinary Filipinos and families. The lessons it has taught us are also just as enduring as the character of Cardo Dalisay (Coco Martin), who continues to defy death and show us what it means to be a good son, husband, father, and citizen.

As it celebrates its three successful years on television, let's take a look back at the lessons "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" has shared with us through some of the most unforgettable and touching moments in the series.

1.    Forgiveness

Although Cardo loves and would do everything for his Lola Flora (Susan Roces), but this has not always been the case. Cardo used to carry a deep grudge against his grandmother for leaving him with another family when he was young. They met again when Cardo disguised as his deceased twin brother Ador, and he confronted Lola Flora and blamed her for all the hardships he experienced alone growing up. Lola Flora tearfully explained that she made the hard decision to make sure the young and sickly Cardo would live, and the family she left him with promised that they would pay for his medication. This revelation instantly took away all the pain in Cardo's heart and made him forgive his beloved lola.

2.    Sacrifice

Because of his fearless dedication to saving lives, Cardo has put himself in danger to accomplish his missions. But as he became a family man, he turned his focus towards his wife and son and gave up his post as a police officer. However, after his son was killed in a terrorist attack that was staged by Pulang Araw, Cardo decided to return to service as a Special Action Force member and set aside his family to hunt down the rebel group. His sacrifice has saved countless of lives, and eventually led him to becoming part of the vigilante group Vendetta that vows to expose corrupt officials and give justice to all their victims.

3.    Unconditional love

Cardo's dedication to avenge his son's death took a toll on his relationship with his wife Alyana (Yassi Pressman). The two lived separate lives for a time, but as soon as Cardo realized that he could potentially lose his wife for good, he rushed to her and brought her to a far-flung community so they could settle their conflict. There, Cardo showed how much he was willing to change for Alyana. It was not easy for her to accept his apology, but after a life-changing incident, Alyana realized that he couldn't live without Cardo and that there was no other man she would want to spend the rest of her life with.

4.    Acceptance

Makmak (Awra Briguela) was adopted by Cardo's family after his father, who used to be part of a syndicate, was sent to prison. After learning that Makmak got into trouble at school because he was teased for being gay, Cardo talked to Makmak and made him understand that there is nothing wrong with who he is. He also pointed out that what matters is that he knows how to love, respect, and fear the Lord.

5.    Patriotism and service

Cardo is greatly admired for his passion to serve the people. Often referred to as "idol" by netizens, he possesses the characteristics of an ideal citizen who strives to preserve peace and inspire people to do good deeds to others, no matter how big or small. Through his humble ways, Cardo has taught patriotism to viewers and showed them that they can be heroes too in their own ways.

Coco's character was also recognized by several government officials like former DILG secretary Mike Sueno and Director General of the Bureau of Corrections Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, who both lauded Cardo for setting a good example to public officials.

Pictures release for the year in 26 markets, including the Philippines, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Romania, Poland and Sweden.  The combined gross for the "Conjuring" universe—the top-grossing horror franchise in cinema history—now stands at more than $1.5 billion.

In making the announcement, Sanders said, "This success further demonstrates the extraordinary scope and appeal of James Wan's "Conjuring" universe.  We again want to congratulate director Corin Hardy and the cast, led by Demian Bichir and Taissa Farmiga, and all the talented people who worked on the film who love to scare audiences and do it so well."

From director Corin Hardy ("The Hallow") comes "The Nun," exploring another dark corner of "The Conjuring" universe.  The terrifying film delves into the shocking origin of the demonic Nun Valak, who first made her evil presence known in "The Conjuring 2."  The film is produced by James Wan ("The Conjuring" films, upcoming "Aquaman") and Peter Safran ("The Conjuring" franchise).

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate.  Together they uncover the order's unholy secret.  Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a nun, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

"The Nun" stars Oscar nominee Demian Bichir ("A Better Life") as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (TV's "American Horror Story") as Sister Irene, and Jonas Bloquet ("Elle") as local villager Frenchie. The cast also includes Charlotte Hope (TV's "Game of Thrones") as the abbey's Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu ("Toni Erdmann") as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her role from "The Conjuring 2" as the title character.

Hardy directed "The Nun" from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman ("IT," the "Annabelle" films), story by James Wan & Dauberman.  Richard Brener, Walter Hamada, Dave Neustadter, Dauberman, Michael Clear and Todd Williams served as executive producers.

New Line Cinema presents an Atomic Monster / Safran Company production, "The Nun."  Still playing in Philippine cinemas, "The Nun" is being distributed in theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Jerome Ponce, Vivoree Esclito, and CK Kieron Teach Value of Inner Beauty in “Wansapanataym: ManiKen ni Monica”

Jerome Ponce, Vivoree Esclito, and CK Kieron are teaming up to teach viewers that real beauty goes beyond just physical attractiveness in "Wansapanataym Presents: ManiKen ni Monica" starting this Sunday (Sep 30).

Often bullied for his looks, Ken (Jerome) dreams of becoming a successful model. But in reality, he is overweight, pimply, and struggles with low self-esteem.

His wish is granted when he comes across Bulalakaw, a wishmaster who transforms Ken into a dashing man. Ken then finds success in modelling, but eventually becomes conceited and arrogant.

But Ken's accomplishments will only make him want more. His insatiable desire to be flawless will be fulfilled once again by Bulalakaw, who makes him a mannequin.

In order to eliminate the curse, Ken will have to find someone who loves him unconditionally – a task that will be made difficult by his family, friends, and acquaintances, whose memory of him will be wiped out.

Ken will then meet Monica (Vivoree), who finds the mannequin version of himself. Like Ken, Monica is insecure and longs to be noticed by her dream guy, Yoshi (CK).

How will Ken and Monica help each other love themselves for what they truly and simply are?

Also part of "Wansapanataym Presents: ManiKen ni Monica" are Malou Crisologo, Dennis Padilla, Tess Antonio, Simon "Onyok" Pineda, KenKen Nuyad, Benj Manalo, Markus Paterson, Patty Mendoza, and Ashley Colet.
