Cinema One Originals Highly Acclaimed Films "Hamog" and "Salvage" Enter Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2017

The Cinema One Originals’ selection “Hamog,” and Cinema One and Salida Productions’ horror flick “Salvage” will be screened at the upcoming Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, a novel initiative of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) to connect quality Filipino films to a wider audience happening on August 16-22.

These two movies join 10 other notable entries chosen by the FDCP as featured films in the festival scheduled during the country’s Buwan ng Wika celebration. The project will have a nationwide release in more than 700 theaters nationwide.

Liza Diňo-Seguerra, FDCP chairperson, shared, “‘Hamog’ and ‘Salvage’ are certainly unique additions to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino lineup. ‘Hamog’ features extremely talented young actors of today in a film that mixes gritty reality with emotional depth while ‘Salvage’ is an impressive attempt at a new brand of keep-you-at-the-edge-of-your-seat horror. We cannot wait for the Filipino audience to see these amazing films in PPP.”

Ralston Jover’s “Hamog” (Haze) tells real-life scenarios of four streetchildren who cannot help but resort to the routine of crime to survive daily life. Two unexpected events soon occur that will challenge and push the kids to make tough choices.

It is the only local film so far that competed in two International Federation of Film Producers Associations or FIAPF A-list film festivals and won in both. It earned the Outstanding Artistic Achievement award for Ralston at the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival, and the Silver St. George Best Actress Award for lead actress Therese Malvar in Moscow International Film Festival, making her the country’s youngest A-list film festival best actress. Aside from the FIAPF recognitions, the film also won the Russian Critics Choice Award for Best Film.

Therese’s performance in “Hamog” also earned her the New York Asian Film Festival’s Rising Star award. Joining her in the cast are Zaijan Jaranilla, Sam Quitania, Bor Lentejas, OJ Mariano, Anna Luna, Mike Liwag, Lou Veloso and Kyline Alcantara.

Meanwhile, the found footage film “Salvage” stars Jessy Mendiola and JC de Vera in a thrilling story of a news team in search of clues. A series of killings has occurred in a remote and haunted province, initially believed to be caused by supernatural attacks.

The Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s movie was cited for Best Film Editing in last year’s Young Critics Circle.

According to a review written by Skilty Labastilla in Young Critics Circle Film Desk, “’Salvage’ does not rely on plot to sustain viewers’ interest, rather, it engages by evoking a sense of mystery and increasing dread. The last twenty breathtaking minutes, in particular, offer a masterclass in shoestring suspense filmmaking by ingenious use of camera angles and lighting, sound and film editing, and no-holds-barred acting.”

The movie also received positive reviews from film directors.

Interested less in the genre as a commercial hook and device, instead, Sanchez cleverly uses its tropes to make a searing statement on the Filipino tribe being seduced by the pomp, spectacle and religious pageantry tendered by a monstrous, native demon sprung from the depths of the jungle,” shared Rico Ilarde.

“Violator” director Dodo Dayao cited, “Sanchez returns to the jungle and comes back with this thoroughly mysterious and hallucinatory piece of modern horror that twists found footage conventions into a strange disturbing new shape.”

Catch “Salvage” and “Hamog” in the first ever Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino happening from August 16-22 in cinemas nationwide. For more information, like Cinema One (@Cinema1channel) and Cinema One Originals (@CinemaOneOriginals) on Facebook.

Angel Aquino and Gretchen Ho Join Bernadette Sembrano in TV Patrol Public Service Caravan

"FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" star Angel Aquino, "Umagang Kay Ganda" anchor Gretchen Ho, and "TV Patrol" anchor Bernadette Sembrano recently came together for an entire day of public service as they joined the nationwide community caravan of "TV Patrol," and helped deliver various services to Kapamilyas in Antique.

Coming from different backgrounds, the trio found a common ground in helping other people as they take part in the caravan's job fair, livelihood seminar, citizen journalism workshop, food distribution, and restroom and library repairs for the people in the province, which was hit hard by Typhoon Frank years ago.

Angel, Gretchen, and Bernadette first showed support to more than 1,000 job seekers in a job fair organized with the help of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Public Employment Services Office (PESO)-Antique at the Robinson's Place-Antique mall, were 22 Kapamilyas were hired on the spot.

They also met 30 former OFW mothers who were taught how to make jam and got one food cart each from "TV Patrol" and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Antique, in the hope that a new livelihood would prevent them from being away from their families again.

The three also saw the newly-repaired restrooms at the San Jose public terminal, a project initiated by "TV Patrol" in cooperation with the local government to bring comfort to drivers and commuters.

After dropping by the citizen journalism workshop of "Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo," the team also went to Barangay Durog, which is still recovering from the damage done by Typhoon Frank. Angel and Gretchen had a storytelling session with the children, who were also happy to receive new school bags from ABS-CBN's Operation Sagip, slippers from "Rated K," and vitamins from "Bantay Bata."

They also unveiled the repaired library at the Durog Elementary School and distributed vegetable seeds for the school's nutrition program, which the teachers started upon noticing some students suffering from malnourishment.

One of the teachers, Jessa Quemado, said it pains them to see their students in this condition. "It feels painful and heavy in the heart to imagine our own children in a situation like this," she said.

To cap the day, they had a healthy and nutritious lunch with community members, who also received grocery packages and fans. Another teacher said, "This is a big help not just for the kids but to every family in the community."

Angel and Gretchen expressed the joy of being part of the "TV Patrol Community Caravan," where they were inspired by the resilience of the people they met.

"Just by visiting them, we've already made them very happy…just by simply talking to them, taking a picture, a selfie, or giving food to them. The experience took us back to who we really are serving," Gretchen said.

Angel added, "It's like food for the heart and soul, to my spirit. Even if we lacked rest and sleep when we got there, we couldn't help but smile because of the energy the kids give off."

Since March, the "TV Patrol Community Caravan," which is part of the newscast's 30th anniversary celebration, has gone to different parts of the nation including Zamboanga, Tacloban, Pangasinan, Iloilo, and Malabon to address the needs of communities with the help of organizations like DOLE, Department of Science and Technology, Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines, Robinsons Land Corporation, Energy Development Corporation, Carl Balita Livelihood Center, House of David, Republic Biscuit Corporation, and Unilever Philippines.

Stay tuned for the continuation of the "TV Patrol Community Caravan" with Kabayan Noli De Castro, Ted Failon, and Bernadette Sembrano on "TV Patrol" from Monday to Friday after "Wildflower" and every Saturday after "Home Sweetie Home." Unravel The Doll's Mystery in 'Annabelle: Creation'

Annabelle is coming to theaters again, and this time audiences will be taken through the infamous doll's very beginnings - from her first home in a little girl's room to her first possession of a little girl's soul, in New Line Cinema's "Annabelle: Creation."

After a chilling cameo in "The Conjuring," followed by a starring role in her own film, it became clear to filmmakers that moviegoers were ready to uncover the origins of the doll that has both terrified and captivated them.

So, on the heels of his successful feature directing debut, last summer's hit "Lights Out," director David F. Sandberg was tapped to helm "Annabelle: Creation," the next chapter in James Wan's "Conjuring" universe produced by Peter Safran and Wan.

"I was already a big fan of 'The Conjuring,' it felt like a classic that stood out from a lot of other modern horror movies," Sandberg says. "I remember I was really intrigued by that world and excited to do my own sort of classic take within the genre."

"When I was directing the first 'Conjuring' and we were designing the Warrens' haunted artifact room, I remember between myself, the studio and the producers, we all kind of looked at each other and said, 'You know, it would be incredible if we could tell the stories of each of these objects,'" Wan recalls, referring to the collection the couple had confiscated over their years of paranormal investigation. "Even then, we felt that giving Annabelle that prologue opening was cool, but we sensed she had a lot more stories to tell. Every time that doll appeared on screen for just those few minutes, people shifted in their seats. Audiences react to her."

To craft the story, the filmmakers turned to scribe Gary Dauberman, who had written "Annabelle" and was eager to dive back in. "The first film I wrote extended the mythology of the doll," he says. "For this one, we wanted to dig into her history and see if we could find out how the evil started.

"Dolls are things that bring people joy, right?" he continues. "They're given as gifts, passed down through generations. So I wanted to set that up for Annabelle by starting her out from a place of love - a happy family - in order to sort of lay the groundwork for a nice contrast to all the bad stuff that would follow."

With a toy taking center stage, kids seemed an appropriate addition to the tale. While batting around more ideas, Dauberman relates, "It was James who had the idea to make the kids orphans, and from there I had my playing field. Then I just had to figure out what it is about this particular doll that makes it so haunting and evil."

Sandberg says the sense of dread already attached to her carried over to the set of "Annabelle: Creation," revealing, "even the actors were a little wary around her, asking me, 'Do I have to touch the doll? I don't really want to touch it,'" he smiles.

In fact, at the request of certain cast members, the production brought in a Catholic priest to bless the set and the prop Annabelle dolls, much as they did before cameras rolled on "The Conjuring 2" and the most recent production, "The Nun."

Just in case.

Opening across the Philippines on August 26, "Annabelle: Creation" is a New Line Cinema presentation, an Atomic Monster/Safran Company production. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Robi Domingo and Gretchen Ho Take a "Sweet" Turn to UST on S+A "University Town"

Robi Domingo and Gretchen Ho visit Asia’s oldest existing university with a special guest tour guide in comedian John “Sweet” Lapus as they continue their campus tour in the show "University Town" (U-Town) this Sunday (July 30) on S+A and S+A HD at 1pm.

Sweet, a proud alumnus of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), also the largest Catholic university in the world in terms of population, will bring Robi and Gretchen to iconic buildings and places inside the school’s sprawling campus along España, where they will be “walking” with presidents, heroes, and saints, as proud Tomasinos would say.

The pair will meet the famed Teatro Tomasino organization, the university-wide theater guild which Sweet was a part of back in college. They will also visit the ice cream cart of Fidel Perez, a certified medical technologist who has seen generations of students since he started selling his sweet treats inside the school in 1989.

Robi and Gretchen will also be joined by UST Director of Public Affairs Giovanna Fontanilla as they marvel at the beautiful structures in the school, which has produced legendary names in the field of architecture including Leandro Locsin and Juan Nakpil.

“U-Town’s” latest episode also highlights the athletic program of the university, where each discipline is given ample attention for better performance in competitions, explaining why UST has the most overall championships in the UAAP. One of the school’s most decorated teams is the Growling Tigers’ judo squad that has amassed 24 UAAP titles.

This is the fourth school that "University Town" gets to explore this season, which is on its second year of featuring the eight schools competing in the country’s premier collegiate league, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

"Kita Kita" Earns P100-Million on its First 8 Days, To Be Released in Cinemas Worldwide

Powered by positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth, the comparatively unconventional romance flick "Kita Kita" has now earned P90 million after a week in theaters, or around 40% more than producers expected before release.

"Parang panaginip," Piolo Pascual, one of the owners of the independently financed Spring Films, which co-produced "Kita Kita," said in an interview.

"When I heard the numbers, hindi ako makapaniwala," he added.

Piolo admitted that he personally expected the movie, which reportedly had a P10-million budget, to make only P50 to P60 million for the entirety of its box office run.

"It's not about the budget of the film. It's about the story, the quality - so ang sarap sa feeling na tinangkilik ng tao," he explained. "I'm overwhelmed."

"Kita Kita," topbilled by the odd-combination of Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez, focused on a Filipina who had lost her vision after her engagement with her Japanese boyfriend fell apart.

The movie was premiered in select cinemas last July 19.

Releasing it in late July was a risk. "Spider-Man: Homecoming" was still showing, and the exceptionally reviewed "Dunkirk" and the space adventure "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" were about to premiere.

Its director, Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, was well-aware of this and posted on social media that she would be satisfied if her film wasn't pulled out of cinemas after just one day. "Nakakagulat! Nakakaiyak!" she wrote.

"Kita Kita" is still showing on 120 cinemas nationwide, and will have international screenings to be announced on a later date.

It made an additional P10 million on Wednesday, taking its 8-day total to at least P100 million. - ABS-CBNNews.com

A World's First! "The Emoji Movie" Sets a Brand-New Guinness World Records Title to Celebrate World Emoji Day

In anticipation of World Emoji Day, and the upcoming worldwide release of The Emoji Movie, emoji fans around the world celebrated by setting the world’s first Guinness World Records™ title for the Largest gathering of people dressed as emoji faces simultaneously across multiple venues.

Watch the featurette about the Guinness World Record at http://youtu.be/bl91yEeshZI

Spanning three continents, the record saw emoji faces inspired by the film’s characters turn up in Dubai, Moscow, London, Dublin, and Sao Paulo, as hundreds of fans dressed as the winningly expressive characters. Additional countries showed enthusiastic support by echoing the effort, with their own emojis participating in similarly themed celebrations; it is estimated that more than 1,000 emojis not associated with the record were in the mix throughout Europe, Asia and South America.

The film, about an emoji that simply can’t stick to just one expression, is due for release in Philippine cinemas on August 23, 2017. It comes at a time when the familiar messaging characters that populate our smartphones are more in demand than ever: in fact, this marks the fourth annual celebration of World Emoji Day, which is getting bigger with each edition and will be formally observed on Monday, July 17.

The global record was simultaneously set by people dressed as the yellow emoji characters from the movie in Sao Paulo, Brazil (local time 11:00am); Dublin, Ireland (local time 3:00pm); Moscow, Russia (local time 5:00pm); Dubai, UAE (local time 6:00pm); and London, England (local time 3:00pm). An adjudicator for Guinness World Records confirmed the new title for the Largest Gathering of people dressed as emoji faces simultaneously across multiple venues.

Commenting on the announcement, Josh Greenstein, President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for Sony Pictures Entertainment, said, “Achieving a Guinness World Records title is a testament to the enormous worldwide appeal of emojis. It’s great to see so many people getting excited for the worldwide release of ‘The Emoji Movie.’”

Jack Brockbank, Guinness World Records Adjudicator, added, “We are incredibly impressed by the level of coordination and timing required to pull off this global record attempt – and it all happened simultaneously! It’s official - this is a fantastic achievement!

The Emoji Movie is the new animated adventure that unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone.

Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever.

Directed by Tony Leondis. Written by Tony Leondis & Eric Siegel and Mike White. Produced by Michelle Raimo Kouyate.

The Emoji Movie is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Cebu Pacific to Provide Free Cargo for Relief Good to Wounded Soldiers, Cops in Marawi

Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB) will be providing airlift support to military and police personnel wounded in action (WIA) in Marawi City. On top of the free airlift on Cebu Pacific flights, the WIA government troops will also get baggage allowance of up to 40 kilograms.

In cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), this initiative aims to augment air support by the Philippine Air Force by helping move wounded government troops from field hospitals in the area to larger medical facilities of the AFP and PNP. Through this, field medical stations can be declogged, giving way for wounded soldiers and police personnel who need immediate medical attention.

"It is with deep gratitude that we accept this kind gesture of support by Cebu Pacific led by its President and CEO, Mr Lance Gokongwei, in the airlift of our heroes Wounded in Action in Marawi. This will not just afford our troops immediate treatment in hospitals that offer better facilities to aid their speedy recovery, but a meaningful gesture to make your Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines feel that their sacrifices are being recognized and appreciated," says Marine Colonel Edgard Arevalo, Chief of the AFP's Public Affairs Office.

"The officers and rank-and-file of the Philippine National Police and our families are grateful for this magnanimous expression of kindness and compassion by the management of Cebu Pacific to provide life-saving medical evacuation to policemen who are wounded in fighting local terrorists in Mindanao. This is not the first time that Cebu Pacific extended a helping hand to our troops. We cannot thank them enough for keeping the Filipino spirit of 'Bayanihan' alive in such crucial time of emergency," says Police Chief Superintendent Dionardo Carlos, Chief of the PNP Public Information Office.

WIA government troops who are fit enough for commercial flights can be accommodated on Cebu Pacific flights from Cagayan de Oro (Laguindingan Airport), and flown to any CEB domestic destination. Currently, Cebu Pacific has direct flights from Cagayan de Oro to Bacolod; Tagbilaran, Bohol; Cebu; Davao; Iloilo and Manila. By July 26, CEB will also fly direct between Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga City.

On top of the airlifting of WIA government troops, CEB is also airlifting cargo of relief goods and other humanitarian assistance for affected residents. Donors may coordinate with the GMA Kapuso Foundation or the Philippine Business for Social Progress for packing and transport arrangements of their donated goods.

Cebu Pacific will continue to provide free cargo support for relief goods and other essential items for displaced residents of Marawi City  and adjacent areas from various organizations, most notably the Department of Social Welfare and Development. These include food and water; medicines; bandages; clothing and other necessities. The airline has provided equipment support to the Office of Civil Defense in the transport of humanitarian assistance.
