Millennial Love Story "Baka Bukas" Starring Jasmine Curtis-Smith Premieres August 13 on Cinema One

Catch a lovely tale of friendship and romance in the 2016 Cinema One Originals Film Festival Audience Choice awardee "Baka Bukas," starring Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Louise delos Reyes, as it finally airs on cable TV via Cinema One this Sunday (August 13).

Samantha Lee's colorful film centers on the story of Alex (Jasmine) who fell in love with her best friend Jess (Louise). One night changes everything as Jess finds out about Alex's affection towards her, and the two are forced to confront their real feelings for each other.

Aside from being the audience's favorite, the film also got the Best Actress nod for Jasmine and Best Sound for Andrew Milallos at the Cinema One Originals filmfest. Its cast includes Kate Alejandrino, Nelsito Gomez, and "C1 BTS" host Gio Gahol.

After its successful filmfest run that gave the movie significant social media attention, "Bakas Bukas" was released in major cinemas nationwide last March.

Cheekie Albay of Cosmo.ph praised the film's fresh approach stating, "I applaud the film for going where other films have not dared to go: for depicting lesbian relationships as a beautiful, tender bond between two people who deserve to love and be loved openly, despite their unconventional romantic choices."

Filmmaker Samantha also garnered positive comments on the film's quality despite it being her directorial debut.

According to a film review published in Uglywriters.com, "she [Samantha] manages to weave a film that greatly departs the usual romance films we see in local cinema. Her focus and treatment of the lesbian and gay characters in the story makes the film relatable to anyone in the audience. She presents them as real people, just like us."

Dare to take a chance in "Baka Bukas" on Cinema One's Blockbuster Sunday (August 13) at 8PM. Cinema One is available on SkyCable and Destiny Cable Digital Channel 56, and Destiny Analog Ch. 37. Like Cinema One on Facebook at facebook.com/Cinema1channel to view full schedule.

International news and entertainment company ABS-CBN served today a Statement of Claim issued in Canadian Federal Court against Techspeed Canada Inc., Joe Baddas, Ferdinand Molina and Todd Ross for damages of over $5 million for copyright infringement, trademark infringement and enabling and inducing copyright infringement of ABS-CBN’s copyrighted works.

The lawsuit alleges that Techspeed Canada Inc., Joe Baddas, Ferdinand Molina and Todd Ross sold set-top boxes that enabled buyers to access hundreds of ABS-CBN’s copyrighted movies and TV shows.  On Facebook, Baddas and Ross are seen making a business presentation to new recruits, teaching them how to buy and sell the set-top boxes.

Captured from Facebook, Todd Ross and Joe Baddas making business presentations of Techspeed.

ABS-CBN’s AVP & Head of Global Anti-Piracy, Elisha Lawrence stated: “ABS-CBN alleges that Techspeed Canada Inc., Joe Baddas, Ferdinand Molina and Todd Ross were taking advantage of ABS-CBN’s premium subscription service through its digital platform, TFC.tv, by registering over 78 emails and distributing the usernames and passwords to hundreds of customers.  These customers were participating in this illegal activity by paying the Techspeed group and giving access to their credit card information.

Lawrence added: “Beware of these operations that are not licensed or affiliated in any way with ABS-CBN.  If you have any suspicions that they are not affiliated with ABS-CBN, please call the ABS-CBN office in the US or Canada to verify.  We will continue to protect customers by shutting these operations down.  There is only one genuine ABS-CBN internet subscription service and that is TFC.tv.  To purchase a legitimate subscription call 1-855-832-2632 or go to TFC.tv .”

From the website of Techspeed that clearly says the company is delivering The Filipino Channel shows and programs via the Android TV boxes.

ABS-CBN Canada Country Manager Jun Del Rosario said, “Under ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez, we have done our best to deliver the best Filipino shows on our platforms that give viewers more choice and flexibility.  We urge the Filipino community in Canada to be on the lookout for those who seek to undermine intellectual property rights and make money illegally from copyright infringement.  These are pirates doing criminal activities. They will be caught.  Their customers will end up losing their illegal subscriptions. So, you don’t want to fall victim to that scheme.  Always go to our website TFC.tv to ensure that you are purchasing from the genuine TFC.”

David Lipkus, counsel for ABS-CBN in Canada, said, “ABS-CBN will continue to take all necessary steps to control access to its content.  ABS-CBN invests tremendous resources into its high-quality, original content, and will continue to ensure that Canadians have access to legitimate ABS-CBN content directly from ABS-CBN.”

"The Dark Tower" Tops Us Box-Office, Opens in Philippine Theaters on August 30

A new Stephen King big-screen adaptation made its way to the top of US box office as Columbia Pictures' The Dark Tower opened at No.1 for the August 4 to 6 weekend. The fantasy action-thriller collected an estimated $19.5-M over the weekend from 3,451 theaters for a $5,651 average.

(Watch the new Dark Tower spots “Battle” at https://youtu.be/so9FGYHtjZA and “Hope” at http://youtu.be/69TY9IDAn3w.)

Demographics the Idris Elba-Matthew McConaughey actioner were typical of a sci-fi action thriller with the crowd being 58% male and 68% over 25.

With good international appeal, The Dark Tower is poised for a successful global rollout. The film opens in Philippine cinemas on August 30, 2017.

There are other worlds than these. Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, the ambitious and expansive story from one of the world’s most celebrated authors, makes its launch to the big screen. The last Knight Warrior, Roland Deschain (Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black (McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.

The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman & Jeff Pinkner and Anders Thomas Jensen & Nikolaj Arcel, based on King’s novels. Producers on the film are Akiva Goldsman, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Erica Huggins.

The Dark Tower is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

"The Dark Tower" Epic Novels Make Long-Awaited Big-Screen Release feat. Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." With these words, Stephen King sparked an entire universe that makes its long-awaited screen debut with Columbia Pictures' The Dark Tower, in Philippine cinemas August 30, 2017.

Idris Elba stars as the gunslinger Roland Deschain, sworn to protect the universe, and his perpetual nemesis, Walter O'Dim, the man in black, played by Matthew McConaughey.

In a career spanning 50 years and over 80 books, King has amassed a towering reputation as one of our greatest storytellers. The author of innumerable bestsellers, he has been honored by the President of the United States with the National Medal for the Arts, by the National Book Foundation with the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, and countless awards and prizes. His name is recognized everywhere as a master of blending our everyday world with the supernatural.

And there is one work that is at the center of his entire canon: The Dark Tower, the eight-novel epic telling of an eternal battle between good and evil, with the fate of multiple worlds at stake. "I started The Dark Tower when I was 22 years old, when I had just graduated from college, so it's spanned my entire career," says King. Over time, he says, as the books and stories piled up, "I started to realize that I had all these characters that were referring back to this other world, Mid-World, the world of The Dark Tower. It had become the centerpiece of my fictional universe –characters who showed up in other books would show up in The Dark Tower and vice versa." Even King himself would become a character in later novels. The Dark Tower series of books would become the nexus for most of the King universe and crosses over into many of King's other books.

It's an epic that has inspired millions of readers – not least of which was a young boy in Denmark whose imagination was sparked by the events in Mid-World. Now grown, director Nikolaj Arcel was determined to be the one to bring The Dark Tower to the screen. Growing up with the Dark Tower books, Arcel became so immersed in the stories that the Danish native taught himself English. He recounts, "When I was about 13, there were almost no Stephen King stories translated into Danish. I became infatuated with the few books that I'd read in Danish, even at that age. And so I had to start picking up his English-version novels and I had to teach myself to read adult novel-style English at a very early age. Stephen King taught me English."

For Arcel, the way King weaves together the personal and the larger-than-life elements of the story is why it's connected to so many readers. "It's as small as a 14 year-old boy, who has visions, who thinks he's crazy, and it's as big as a hero fighting a great villain and trying to save the entire universe. It expands from the very intimate to the very epic."

And at the center of the story is the Dark Tower. "The Tower is a thing of beauty, it's a thing of awe, with a powerful presence – it holds the whole world together. I think it's beyond our comprehension," says Arcel, "I think every single fan of the books will have their own idea of what the Dark Tower is."

So who better to ask what it is than the man who created it? "You have to imagine an axle or a spindle, with all of these worlds connected to it," says King. "You know what happens to a car if you cut the axle – it doesn't run anymore. The Tower is the stabilizing force, and the Gunslingers are this ancient group of knights dedicated to the idea of protecting the Tower. But they have been wiped out – there's only one left, Roland. And standing opposite him is an agent of chaos who wants to bring the Tower down," King concludes.

The Dark Tower is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Jason Abalos and Empress Schuck return to “Ipaglaban Mo” this Saturday (August 5) as parents seeking justice for their daughter, who died after getting bitten by their neighbor’s dog.

Bong (Jason) and Marie (Empress) thought they would never have a child and almost gave up on their dream of having a complete family. That is why when Happy (Myel de Leon) came into their lives, they considered it as such a big blessing.

Happy grew up to be a nice, energetic kid and just like her parents, was also fond of dogs particularly that of their neighbor Hilda (Katya Santos).

One day, while Happy was playing with her other friends, the dog suddenly bit her in the forehead. Bong and Marie rushed Happy to the hospital to get treatments and to get an anti-rabies shot, but after a few days, their little angel didn’t survive and died.

Cinema One Originals Highly Acclaimed Films "Hamog" and "Salvage" Enter Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2017

The Cinema One Originals’ selection “Hamog,” and Cinema One and Salida Productions’ horror flick “Salvage” will be screened at the upcoming Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, a novel initiative of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) to connect quality Filipino films to a wider audience happening on August 16-22.

These two movies join 10 other notable entries chosen by the FDCP as featured films in the festival scheduled during the country’s Buwan ng Wika celebration. The project will have a nationwide release in more than 700 theaters nationwide.

Liza Diňo-Seguerra, FDCP chairperson, shared, “‘Hamog’ and ‘Salvage’ are certainly unique additions to the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino lineup. ‘Hamog’ features extremely talented young actors of today in a film that mixes gritty reality with emotional depth while ‘Salvage’ is an impressive attempt at a new brand of keep-you-at-the-edge-of-your-seat horror. We cannot wait for the Filipino audience to see these amazing films in PPP.”

Ralston Jover’s “Hamog” (Haze) tells real-life scenarios of four streetchildren who cannot help but resort to the routine of crime to survive daily life. Two unexpected events soon occur that will challenge and push the kids to make tough choices.

It is the only local film so far that competed in two International Federation of Film Producers Associations or FIAPF A-list film festivals and won in both. It earned the Outstanding Artistic Achievement award for Ralston at the 19th Shanghai International Film Festival, and the Silver St. George Best Actress Award for lead actress Therese Malvar in Moscow International Film Festival, making her the country’s youngest A-list film festival best actress. Aside from the FIAPF recognitions, the film also won the Russian Critics Choice Award for Best Film.

Therese’s performance in “Hamog” also earned her the New York Asian Film Festival’s Rising Star award. Joining her in the cast are Zaijan Jaranilla, Sam Quitania, Bor Lentejas, OJ Mariano, Anna Luna, Mike Liwag, Lou Veloso and Kyline Alcantara.

Meanwhile, the found footage film “Salvage” stars Jessy Mendiola and JC de Vera in a thrilling story of a news team in search of clues. A series of killings has occurred in a remote and haunted province, initially believed to be caused by supernatural attacks.

The Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s movie was cited for Best Film Editing in last year’s Young Critics Circle.

According to a review written by Skilty Labastilla in Young Critics Circle Film Desk, “’Salvage’ does not rely on plot to sustain viewers’ interest, rather, it engages by evoking a sense of mystery and increasing dread. The last twenty breathtaking minutes, in particular, offer a masterclass in shoestring suspense filmmaking by ingenious use of camera angles and lighting, sound and film editing, and no-holds-barred acting.”

The movie also received positive reviews from film directors.

Interested less in the genre as a commercial hook and device, instead, Sanchez cleverly uses its tropes to make a searing statement on the Filipino tribe being seduced by the pomp, spectacle and religious pageantry tendered by a monstrous, native demon sprung from the depths of the jungle,” shared Rico Ilarde.

“Violator” director Dodo Dayao cited, “Sanchez returns to the jungle and comes back with this thoroughly mysterious and hallucinatory piece of modern horror that twists found footage conventions into a strange disturbing new shape.”

Catch “Salvage” and “Hamog” in the first ever Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino happening from August 16-22 in cinemas nationwide. For more information, like Cinema One (@Cinema1channel) and Cinema One Originals (@CinemaOneOriginals) on Facebook.

Angel Aquino and Gretchen Ho Join Bernadette Sembrano in TV Patrol Public Service Caravan

"FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" star Angel Aquino, "Umagang Kay Ganda" anchor Gretchen Ho, and "TV Patrol" anchor Bernadette Sembrano recently came together for an entire day of public service as they joined the nationwide community caravan of "TV Patrol," and helped deliver various services to Kapamilyas in Antique.

Coming from different backgrounds, the trio found a common ground in helping other people as they take part in the caravan's job fair, livelihood seminar, citizen journalism workshop, food distribution, and restroom and library repairs for the people in the province, which was hit hard by Typhoon Frank years ago.

Angel, Gretchen, and Bernadette first showed support to more than 1,000 job seekers in a job fair organized with the help of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Public Employment Services Office (PESO)-Antique at the Robinson's Place-Antique mall, were 22 Kapamilyas were hired on the spot.

They also met 30 former OFW mothers who were taught how to make jam and got one food cart each from "TV Patrol" and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Antique, in the hope that a new livelihood would prevent them from being away from their families again.

The three also saw the newly-repaired restrooms at the San Jose public terminal, a project initiated by "TV Patrol" in cooperation with the local government to bring comfort to drivers and commuters.

After dropping by the citizen journalism workshop of "Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo," the team also went to Barangay Durog, which is still recovering from the damage done by Typhoon Frank. Angel and Gretchen had a storytelling session with the children, who were also happy to receive new school bags from ABS-CBN's Operation Sagip, slippers from "Rated K," and vitamins from "Bantay Bata."

They also unveiled the repaired library at the Durog Elementary School and distributed vegetable seeds for the school's nutrition program, which the teachers started upon noticing some students suffering from malnourishment.

One of the teachers, Jessa Quemado, said it pains them to see their students in this condition. "It feels painful and heavy in the heart to imagine our own children in a situation like this," she said.

To cap the day, they had a healthy and nutritious lunch with community members, who also received grocery packages and fans. Another teacher said, "This is a big help not just for the kids but to every family in the community."

Angel and Gretchen expressed the joy of being part of the "TV Patrol Community Caravan," where they were inspired by the resilience of the people they met.

"Just by visiting them, we've already made them very happy…just by simply talking to them, taking a picture, a selfie, or giving food to them. The experience took us back to who we really are serving," Gretchen said.

Angel added, "It's like food for the heart and soul, to my spirit. Even if we lacked rest and sleep when we got there, we couldn't help but smile because of the energy the kids give off."

Since March, the "TV Patrol Community Caravan," which is part of the newscast's 30th anniversary celebration, has gone to different parts of the nation including Zamboanga, Tacloban, Pangasinan, Iloilo, and Malabon to address the needs of communities with the help of organizations like DOLE, Department of Science and Technology, Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines, Robinsons Land Corporation, Energy Development Corporation, Carl Balita Livelihood Center, House of David, Republic Biscuit Corporation, and Unilever Philippines.

Stay tuned for the continuation of the "TV Patrol Community Caravan" with Kabayan Noli De Castro, Ted Failon, and Bernadette Sembrano on "TV Patrol" from Monday to Friday after "Wildflower" and every Saturday after "Home Sweetie Home." Unravel The Doll's Mystery in 'Annabelle: Creation'

Annabelle is coming to theaters again, and this time audiences will be taken through the infamous doll's very beginnings - from her first home in a little girl's room to her first possession of a little girl's soul, in New Line Cinema's "Annabelle: Creation."

After a chilling cameo in "The Conjuring," followed by a starring role in her own film, it became clear to filmmakers that moviegoers were ready to uncover the origins of the doll that has both terrified and captivated them.

So, on the heels of his successful feature directing debut, last summer's hit "Lights Out," director David F. Sandberg was tapped to helm "Annabelle: Creation," the next chapter in James Wan's "Conjuring" universe produced by Peter Safran and Wan.

"I was already a big fan of 'The Conjuring,' it felt like a classic that stood out from a lot of other modern horror movies," Sandberg says. "I remember I was really intrigued by that world and excited to do my own sort of classic take within the genre."

"When I was directing the first 'Conjuring' and we were designing the Warrens' haunted artifact room, I remember between myself, the studio and the producers, we all kind of looked at each other and said, 'You know, it would be incredible if we could tell the stories of each of these objects,'" Wan recalls, referring to the collection the couple had confiscated over their years of paranormal investigation. "Even then, we felt that giving Annabelle that prologue opening was cool, but we sensed she had a lot more stories to tell. Every time that doll appeared on screen for just those few minutes, people shifted in their seats. Audiences react to her."

To craft the story, the filmmakers turned to scribe Gary Dauberman, who had written "Annabelle" and was eager to dive back in. "The first film I wrote extended the mythology of the doll," he says. "For this one, we wanted to dig into her history and see if we could find out how the evil started.

"Dolls are things that bring people joy, right?" he continues. "They're given as gifts, passed down through generations. So I wanted to set that up for Annabelle by starting her out from a place of love - a happy family - in order to sort of lay the groundwork for a nice contrast to all the bad stuff that would follow."

With a toy taking center stage, kids seemed an appropriate addition to the tale. While batting around more ideas, Dauberman relates, "It was James who had the idea to make the kids orphans, and from there I had my playing field. Then I just had to figure out what it is about this particular doll that makes it so haunting and evil."

Sandberg says the sense of dread already attached to her carried over to the set of "Annabelle: Creation," revealing, "even the actors were a little wary around her, asking me, 'Do I have to touch the doll? I don't really want to touch it,'" he smiles.

In fact, at the request of certain cast members, the production brought in a Catholic priest to bless the set and the prop Annabelle dolls, much as they did before cameras rolled on "The Conjuring 2" and the most recent production, "The Nun."

Just in case.

Opening across the Philippines on August 26, "Annabelle: Creation" is a New Line Cinema presentation, an Atomic Monster/Safran Company production. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
