ABS-CBN News Boosts Fight Against Fake News with Digital-First Stories

ABS-CBN News strengthens its fight against disinformation and misinformation online with the launch of "NXT," informative videos on current events and relevant issues produced for the digital generation of Filipinos.

"NXT," which is housed within ABS-CBN News' online and social media platforms, will explain complex issues and phenomenon through concise, engaging, and well-researched videos that will first be released on digital. It "unbreaks" traditional news formats to suit the changing needs, habits, and interests of audiences online.

ABS-CBN News Digital head Karen Puno said they envision "NXT" to be the source of authoritative news content produced specifically and especially for the YouTube generation, who are currently being targeted in spreading disinformation and misinformation online.

"We set up a new team composed of video journalists and producers that will utilize all manners of audio and visual tools and storytelling styles to deliver relevant, credible, and authoritative breaking and context news stories to the digital generation," she said.

ABS-CBN Integrated News & Current Affairs head Ging Reyes said this small but nimble team of video-and-tech-savvy video producers will be working with ABS-CBN News' roster of veteran news reporters and researchers to produce videos that are truly able to analyze and provide context to current events. "NXT" will also carry in-depth reports, fact-check pieces, and features that convey the biggest stories of the day.

Breaking in its video capabilities before the "Halalan 2019" in May, NXT produced veteran journalist Christian Esguerra's explainer "#Halalan2019: Ano ba talaga ang trabaho ng senador?" (https://www.facebook.com/dzmmteleradyo/videos/2022904938004294/) which aimed to enlighten audiences on the real responsibilities of a senator.

Meanwhile, the "Millennial Meetup" series featured six young persons for a discussion on the country's most pressing issues, including mental health, same-sex marriage, and federalism like in this video (https://www.facebook.com/abscbnNEWS/videos/335768793752387/). On the other hand, the "Pipol" series focused on individuals who achieved near-impossible feats or have remarkable stories, like shoe designer Jojo Bragais, who created Catriona Gray's Miss Universe heels (https://www.facebook.com/abscbnNEWS/videos/483818115725435/).

These "NXT" videos gather page views anywhere from 150,000 to 2.5 million, serving as testimony to the new news consumers' appetite for this video form.

The launch of "NXT" is part of the digital transition of ABS-CBN, which has the biggest online presence among local media networks and a growing list of digital properties. In 2018, the country's leading media and entertainment company relaunched its pioneering streaming service iWant, which presently houses the biggest library of free movies, shows, and live events in the country and opened 2019 with over 11.3 million subscribers.

Stay tuned to the "NXT" videos on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram via @ABSCBNnews. For updates go to @abscbnpr on Facebook, Instagram, and twitter, or go to abscbnpr.com.

“MOMOL Nights” Now Streaming on iWant

Can true love blossom between two lonely people in the age of ghosting, dating apps, reading too much into texts, and no-strings-attached "situationships"?

iWant dives into the murky waters of modern dating and its all-too-common stories of disappointment and complicated rules in the new original movie "MOMOL Nights," which is now streaming for free.

In this relatable and sexy romantic comedy, Kim Molina and Kit Thompson play people who are in need of connection and intimacy.

Straight from a break-up and not ready for commitment, Peng (Kim) starts to MOMOL ("make out make out lang") around, encouraged by her friends who are into meet-ups and hook-ups.

Guided by a set of MOMOL rules, Peng psyches and primes herself to be ready for exciting escapades. They turn out be both an adventure and a letdown, even if her first encounter is an epic fail.

Until one night, she meets Marco (Kit), an artist who turns her regular MOMOL nights into extended one-night stands.

It's all casual and light-hearted, until one of them breaks the cardinal rule of MOMOL: don't get emotionally invested and involved.

Will they MOMOL forever or MOMOL their way to forever?

Kim is also seen in ABS-CBN teleseryes "Kadenang Ginto" and "The General's Daughter," while Kit Thompson currently stars in the primetime crime-drama "Sino Ang Maysala?: Mea Culpa."

Produced by Dreamscape Digital and Lonewolf Films, "MOMOL Nights" is directed by Benedict Mique, the writer and director of the critically acclaimed movie "ML." The digital movie is also written by Mique and Carlo Ventura.

The iWant original movie also stars Kate Alejandrino, Emmanuelle Vera, Prince Stefan, and Benj Manalo.

Aside from the Kim-Kit starrer, a book based on the original screenplay of "MOMOL Nights" will also be released by ABS-CBN Books. It will be sold for P195 at ABS-CBN Books, Facebook Store, Lazada, Shopee, and leading newsstands and bookstores very soon.

Stream "MOMOL Nights" now on the iWant app (iOs and Android) or on iwant.ph. For updates, like www.facebook.com/iWant, and follow @iwant on Twitter and @iwantofficial and @dreamscapedigital on Instagram, and subscribe to www.youtube.com/iWantPH.

Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. Interns Develop Learning Materials for Public School Children

Public school children will soon be able to enjoy learning from new multimedia learning materials developed by multimedia arts students who took part under Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc.'s internship program.

"Our interns have been playing significant and pivotal roles in achieving Knowledge Channel's vision. They have made significant contributions for KCFI in animation, software development, marketing and communication, and other outputs that benefit our Filipino learners and teachers.  It is not just about the work they do but the impact they make on the public school system and subsequently, on the country," Knowledge Channel president and executive director Rina Lopez-Bautista said.

A majority of the 168 interns collaborated with animation developers to animate Department of Education-prescribed textbooks and children's stories to be shown on-air via Knowledge Channel, online through www.knowledgechannel.org, and offline through the Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library. They also assisted in engaging school communities and produced marketing materials for the educational animation videos.

"Basa Bilang" is a program that aims to educate Grades 1 to 3 learners on Oracy, Beginning Reading (in English and Filipino), and Early Numeracy through animated videos.

The internship's success has led most students to want to stay on as volunteers. This led to the creation of a volunteer component of the program and making it the Knowledge Channel Volunteer and Internship Program or KCVIP.  Alongside this is the announcement of the senior high school immersion component.

KCFI aims to develop more videos for primary grade beginning reading and math in the next three years to help improve student proficiencies in these subjects which are the cornerstones of higher learning. By mastering the basics of reading and numeracy, pupils will be able to better face challenges in school and in life.
